Love In A Big City: A Small World For A Big Love!!!

Love in the Big City moved me in a way that’s hard to put into words. It wasn’t just the kind of show you watch—it was the kind that wraps itself around your heart and makes you feel every beat of it. The way it portrayed love felt so deeply real, like it was telling a story for all of us—no labels, no boundaries—just love in its purest form. Watching the characters navigate their emotions, their fears, and their hopes felt like looking into a mirror, seeing the same vulnerabilities and desires we all carry. It’s rare to come across something that feels so human, so alive, that it shakes you to your core. I found myself holding my breath during the quiet moments, feeling the weight of their emotions in my chest as if they were my own. That’s the kind of show this is—the kind that lingers long after the screen fades to black, making you reflect on your own experiences, your own heart.

And then there’s the actor. I can’t express how much respect I have for him. It’s one thing to play a role, but it’s another to choose a role that you know could change everything for you. He didn’t just step into this character—he owned it, with every ounce of sincerity and passion he could muster. In a world that sometimes seems afraid of stories that break the mold, he stood there, unapologetically, and told this story with a vulnerability that left me speechless. The bravery it takes to not just perform but to stand behind something that could impact your future is beyond inspiring. He made me realize that sometimes the stories that matter most are the ones that challenge us, the ones that require us to step into the unknown and take a risk. And through him, I felt that—the courage to live fully, to love fully, even when the world isn’t ready. That’s what this show did for me. It made me remember that life isn’t about the endings we look for, but about the moments of truth we live through.

It's impossible to talk about this without acknowledging the groundwork laid by earlier shows, particularly "Where Your Eyes Linger" (2020), directed by Hwang Da Seul. That series marked the first significant step in South Korean media towards openly exploring stories of love between two men. The success of "Where Your Eyes Linger" allowed for a cultural shift, opening doors for more complex, genuine love stories to be told. Since then, the industry has been moving forward cautiously, and "Love in the Big City" feels like the culmination of those brave early efforts, bringing an even broader, more inclusive narrative to the forefront.

What stands out is the journey over these past few years—incremental progress that finally reached a point where a show like this could emerge with confidence. It's a testament to the courage of the creators, actors, and production teams, who have taken a step forward in expanding what love means on screen in a conservative society, showing that love itself transcends all boundaries. It's a show for everyone, capturing the beautiful mess of human emotions, with no need to categorize or define it.

Cookie cutter cold male CEO- bubbly assistant romance

Dropping this, the show is pretty boring. I watched until episode 4. The plot seems very redundant with the traumatic past resulting in cold ML, a bubbly FL breaking his mold, a clingy confidant of the ML being jealous all that jazz. Plot movement is slow and the romance hasn't sucked me in. The humour is very mild and didn't make me laugh.

The acting is fine, the ML doesn't have to act anyways since is the arrogant cold faced CEO so I guess we could say he does his job well. The FL is doing her part well but The dubbed voice on Liang Jie is not convincing since I'm used to her natural voice. I mainly started watching since I'm her fan but the different voice makes me feel like I'm not even watching her.

Overall watch this if you're looking for more of the same modern Chinese romcoms which feature CEO-assistant pairs. In my opinion, Lucky's First Love is a better option.

So... This is how I see it

Ep1: I hate him I hate him I HATE HIM and I'll run from school because of him

Ep2: I want to avoid him so I pretend to be sick. He knows, he visites me and takes me to see some beautiful place. Suddenly I don't have a problem to sit in his car and I don't object.

Ep3: He takes me to my favourite food and now I'm head over heels. And I fenally told my friend (and watchers as well) ny sister liked him and he liked her back. I know it's true and I'll be do down bad when I'll find out it was all misunderstanding...

Sorry guys, I can see why you like it, but this is just not my cup of tea.

Decent comedy but weird choices to make her a groomer

Maybe not bad, but not my tastes. Personally I found it too heavy on the comedy, it might even be considered slapstick. But if you like a lot of comedy and only a splash of romance then maybe you will like this, if you can overlook the next issue.

People trying to reduce this to an age gap show are missing a fundamental issue. The gap isn't the issue, the problem is the grooming that is heavily emphasized and treated as romantic. She was literally his teacher and idolized by him. They emphasize how much he has put her on a pedestal because he was going through such a rough time in school at the time and was super vulnerable. This is not a background part of the plot, it is a core part of his character that dominates multiple episodes. This is actually text book grooming, so to give it the kdrama sparkle of romance is really uncomfortable.

Weirdly they also just show her desperately clinging to men, at least from what I could see, she just clings to whoever is in front of her, which made it hard to feel like the character had any dignity or the prospective romance had any value, since she's just willing to settle for anything.

Beyond those issues show was decent, the characters and acting are good, and the broader plot about the historical preservation people is really interesting.

Though I found it weird that his character is supposed to be a devoted historical reenactor type, but has a modern haircut? I am by no means an expert, and even I expected him to have his hair tied up on the top of his head, especially wearing that hat, it was jarring to have short hair under it.

The time travel is not the most unrealistic part

Spoiler ahead, sorry, but I suggest you read it, as it might save you a bit of time and also it might save you from a lot of angst.

Ok, so I am completely baffled. This is the second drama of its kind that I start watching and having to drop, out of sheer frustration. The other one I am referring to is Go Back Couple, which had the same issue (even though in that one, at least one of the leads, even if momentarily, seems to care about it).

I even looked for the writers of these 2 kdramas, and they're different.

So, the huge problem I am talking about: even while going into these traveling-back-in-time dramas ready to accept all sorts of impossible and illogical storylines (from a scientific perspective), the thing that makes me mad is how they deal with their children, from their original timelines.

The moment the ML decides to change the circumstances around meeting the original wife, knowing it will lead to them having no future together, he also virtually kills his children. I don't even care to know if the ML from this one comes to its senses later on in the drama or not.

Because there is no reasonable human being, that I know, that would behave that way. It's one thing to fantasize about living a life together with someone else, by making a different choice sometimes in your past. It's unthinkable to imagine that scenario knowing that way you are also losing, forever (ie killing), your young children.

Unless you're sick, I guess. As in psychiatric disorder levels of sickness. Which neither this drama, or Go Back Couple, seem to want to imply.

So yeah, watch this if you don't have kids and what I am saying seems just incomprehensible to you.

Slapstick humor, over excessive acting, stupid plot lines to move along the story especially “unfortunate fl”, and a lot of unnecessary yelling

But ironically I like the fls voice, tho not when she yells🫡 I don’t mind their mythology but fl being manhandled, scammed and blah blah is eyeroll worthy
Fl is screaming and yelling almost all the time now it’s getting annoying like Vincenzo fl

Overrated drama with toxic characters

Gave in after people were hyping up this drama so much and had to drop it after 3 episodes because I got anger issues from the main male lead. The romanticizing of a failed marriage where the man is actually happy that his partner is dying and pretending to be a good husband for his peace of mind is crazy. The whole plot of oh they are falling in love again after the male lead suddenly learns to appreciate his wife again once she is actually dying and weak absolutely irks me and frankly I am not even surprised this kind of plot was popular in Korea. If anyone can convince me otherwise that I might be wrong and that I should give it another try, feel free to try.

just average

Meh! Do they still make dramas like this? The FL is not particularly pretty or funny but still everybody gets crazy over her... The ML is hot, but teenage-like hot, no maturity to his character what so far, he cant take himself seriously. The SML is like a prop, handsome but lacks personality...
Fashion - these guys work in fashion and retail - is lame! Besides the ML's suits, nothing attractive in terms of clothing.
Just watching to pass time while waiting for recommendations.

A funny lakorn filmed partially in Prague. Pra'ek with looks of Ken Theeradeth is still single and works at Royal Thai Embassy. His mother is unhappy with him still being unmarried in his thirties, to the point that she is now forcing him to enter an arranged marriage. So, he asks his friend for help, because he's got an idea that if he hired someone posing as his girlfriend, then she could block the arranged woman from getting to him. His friend then looks for a girl for him, whom he could hire and asks his local pimp for a paid girl. At the same time though, the friend's sister, who's got a longtime crush on pra'ek, hears about this and decides impulsively to get hired for the task herself. Therefore, for love, she pretends to be a hooker, LOL. It has to be noted that with looks of Janie Tienphosuwan, she is convincing as such. She arrives at Prague airport in red mini-dress, black sunglasses and black leather high boots. Her make-up screams from a mile off.

It's funny, because had she been a real call-girl she would not have the need to dress up like that in public for everyone to see, but because she only pretended to be one, she needed to, LOL. Either way, pra'ek obviously doesn't remember, or recognize his friend's kid sister. Hers is the unrequited crush, then. It's cute to watch her using the oportunity to be openly flirty with him now, as she is playing the prostitute role anyways. The more funny it is that his reactions to that are totally stuck-up: not interested in paid women any more than in arranged brides, he keeps being all bussiness. So, while in general I would prefer Ken to be paired with softer beauty than Janie, she did fit the requirements for this kind of a plot. I couldn't help but approve the way her character grabbed the chance to flirt her pra'ek. It was certainly getting her his attention at last, and it was hilarious.

But! The runtime of this lakorn is HUGE...

So, besides this, there is the second couple, who is even more raunchy than the first couple, formed by pra'ek's best friend, the one who's a regular at "massage parlors", portrayed by funny & sexy Not Vorarit (perfect cast) and the uptight, glasses-wearing "reporter", nevertheless portrayed by the bombshell Sara Legge. These two instantly "hit it off" right their first meeting, when he - what would you guess? - mistakenly takes her for a hooker, lol. These two are even more funny than the main ones, and didn't need to travel all the way to Prague for it, lol. Speaking of which, I indeed thought the Prague setting would suffice for the 1st epi, why the filming lingered there was a mystery to me. It was not needed at all for the plot. When I had to watch sequences like Janie wandering the Old Town at night wearing her "hooker clothes", encountering a young guy who was supposed to scare Janie by whistling at her (the volunteer "actor" almost choking at one point, not able to really whistle for the fourth time in a row:) and then almost getting raped near the Old Town Square, I really thought that enough was enough. Let's get back to romantic comedy, not parody, here. Only thing I liked was when Ken's pra'ek received a small buquet of a few gentle tulips from Janie as thank you. It was a cute & touching gesture and looked way better than the huge buquet Sara Legge received from the naughty second pra'ek back in Thailand;)

Then the third couple is introduced, which is nang'ek's friend, portrayed by Selina Pearce, and nang'ek's intended future husband, portrayed by Boy Chokchai, whose character is the guy nang'ek fled to Prague from, lol. He then starts to harrass her friend instead, resulting in very bad/not visible "kiss" (it looks more like he wants to choke her or strangle her) on the same annoying level as Boy Chokchai's low acting skills. Gee, the 3rd couple will be a pain.

Since epi 3, it starts getting boring (overly prolonged). Instead of returning to Thailand, yet more cast arrives in Prague, including praek's arranged marriage girl. Janie's nang'ek then moves into pra'ek's bedroom to play the girlfriend role, but does not sleep in a bed with him (despite her character is supposed to be a hooker) and rather sleeps on the floor. Second couple got separated, because praek's sister came to Prague, too. Third couple is annoying as before, only now without even the poor quality "kiss". Looks like many skippable filler episodes await...

I'm putting this on hold as I'm not very excited to see more.

Episode 4: Okay after I put ths show for 2 months on ice I attempted episode 4. I did not finish it. I am dropping this for the lack of futher interest.

boring

since i had been hearing about this drama series here and there i wanted to give it a try. i like mild and other actors also seemed good so i had high expectations and thought i would enjoy it. but i could stand this series only for 3 episodes... the story starts off well and interesting, it seems like it will develop well. but it just goes nowhere. everything is messy. i got super bored. the plot is just all over the place. i thought of giving it another chance and watch the 4th episode as well but no way... im disappointed.

I REALLY wanted to like this drama

The action was great, the actors even better, special effects were good, production values were top notch, and I'm throwing a serious shout out to the stunt performers. Everything worked except the script.

I loathe plots that rely on the stupidity of the protagonist because the scriptwriter couldn't be bothered to find another way to move the plot. When that stupidity is mired in mach 10 sexism I'm even less forgiving. I watch enough kdrama that I'm resigned to the sexism that pervades its stories, but even with that built in allowance, this script leaned too heavily on bimbo stereotypes to drive the action.

I won't spill anything that will spoil your experience if sexism and stupidity aren't deal breakers for you, and sadly they aren't for many people - that's why there's so much of it, but I will point out a few of the details that had me trotting back to my watch list for something more worthy of my time: A trained covert agent of the a Korean National Intelligence Service hides her multiple fake passports and IDs in her underwear box, because who would ever rifle through a woman's lingerie to find evidence? She keeps her gun unloaded, presumably because she's never heard of a gun safe, so it's never ready when she needs it. No matter how many times this recurs, her behavior doesn't change. It seems even superstar Bae Suzy did not have the clout to plead for a production that didn't make her character an idiot.

And, yes, I'm calling it sexism because, unless it's slapstick comedy, a script for a male agent would not have his go-bag tossed in with his underwear, his gun unloaded when he needed it, or his hands shaking too badly to load that gun; nor would he be the only character in the series that didn't qualify for at least a semi-automatic weapon. The script wouldn't have a male agent hand off his weapon to an untrained civilian to do the bang-bang stuff, even if that civilian IS a manly Mary Sue who could do everything but don a cape and fly - although he did some impressive parkour that was close to flying. Finally, I'm pretty sure the scriptwriter would not have a male agent advocate to flee the county where ALL the known suspects are because "our lives are at stake," like that's not in the job description.

The sexist stereotypes and dependence on stupidity are not, by far, the only saboteurs of a script that stretches credulity on so many levels, but if you're still undeterred, those things probably won't bother you either.

The actors, all of whom delivered on their performances, deserved better than they got. So did the viewers. Life is short and there are too many wonderful kdramas to waste time on a contrived story line with a Swiss cheese plot. I dropped the series after three episodes.

I won't hesitate to find other dramas these actors are in, because every one of them was excellent in their roles, but I'll avoid the scriptwriters like they're patient zero for the plague.

Was it love or was it a waste of time

Let’s be honest. I did not finish this drama and dropped it a while ago midway through episode 2 or 3. I don’t remember the story very well but I do remember vividly the annoyance that the FL brought me while watching. I could say it is one of the worst K-drama out there in my taste. Most shows I dropped half way but I don’t recall any that irks me this much as this one. If I could give a score of 0, it would be 0 for everything from story to cast.

Story: The premise is very promising. A hardworking single mom is determined to build a better life for her daughter but also to live her dream. I’m probably biased and over-hopeful for an empowering story because it is very similar to my real life situation. But the FL turned out to be just crazy. The plot is severely flawed from the very beginning. She gets pregnant and decides to have a kid alone without telling the father or any attempt for communication and to hate him without any reasons. I don’t care what misunderstanding that may have been between them, it is psychologically NOT normal for a modern woman to behave in such contemptuous martyrdom. It is not only selfish to the family, the father and the child but also insulting to the efforts of generations of women to advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. Every one of her actions throughout the short few episodes I watched is whiny, self-absorbed, pity-seeking and unrepentant.
The MLs aren’t any better, unfortunately. It’s another major plot hole I cannot comprehend that is what qualities the MLs see in the FL other than they know her in the past. The writer seems to forget that there has been a 14-year gap. It is extremely unrealistic and unbelievable that they are all still single and hung up over a woman after such a long time. I’m glad that I did not finish the show because apparently from other reviews I have read, the reason for the breakup is because of interference from one of the ML based on the logic that he likes her first. More maddening is that the real father upon making up to the FL decides to run away for another two years instead of making up lost time for his daughter. Seriously, WTF! Had I watched it to the end I would probably have smashed my phone unsubscribed Netflix, lol. The story appears to go from bad to worst in 16 episodes.

Cast/Acting: I generally don’t tolerate loud and excessive FL very well, and I’m very disappointed with Song Ji Hyo (SJH) in this one particularly. I have watched her in Emergency Couple, the premise of which is also similar to this one where the FLs overcome adversities to realize their dreams. I kinda tolerate her in the other one and managed to finish the drama albeit skipping a lot but this one she really made me just switch off my phone completely. The two characters have slightly different personalities and stories, however, SJH’s portrayals of the two turn out to be identical, just pure annoyance. She fails to demonstrate the characters as strong and capable women and only shows them as illogically unreasonable and stubborn people. I guess her strength is more suitable for variety shows than dramas.
As for the MLs, I can’t be sure if all the suitors had been introduced by the time I dropped to really comment. One thing I do remember is Son Ho Jun. I expected something more from him after Reply 1994 and Backtrack couple. Although he is not the best actor, his performance in this drama is simply just flat and bland. The chemistry between him and the FL is also off. He cannot convey any emotions at critical moments such as at the revelation that he is the father (I skipped all to this portentous scene instead of torturing myself through all the lengthy and wearisome middle episodes).
The best performance in the first 2 episodes probably should go to the FL’s daughter. The kiddo is witty and show maturity beyond age but it does not come across as forced or fake.

Music: I doubt that any K-drama would feature bad music but I dropped the show very early on and did not have any recollection of the music, so unimpressive is probably the best description.

Recommendation/Rewatch value: Avoid at all cost. A total waste of time. If you are looking for romance, there’s no chemistry between the casts and not even romantic swoon-worthy scene. If you are looking for an inspiring story about a determined and independent woman, this show is the opposite of it. I don’t even know what it is.
