TharnType (2019)

I really don’t understand the love for this show.

I wanted to like it, I really did, but from the start Tharn is just a sex pest /abuser. He should be in prison!

Yes Type was homophobic but he had reasons.

There are no reasons or excuses to molest someone in their sleep.

I abandoned the show after the molestation and went to watch something else but decided to come back and see if it got better. I made it through episode 6 and decided it’s just that worth it. I can’t support a relationship based on abuse.

How is this portrayed as normal in this day and age?

A must watch. That's all I can say. Even though I haven't been big on Thai drama since the plot is usually way too stretched out without any actual real content, this one just ticks all the boxes. From the angst, to the humour, to the passion. This drama has taken me for a roller coaster of emotions and I can't stop watching nor can I stop continuously rewatching scenes btw each episode and episode. The wait is unbearable, but every episode delivers the most epic twist and turn. I've even cried, laughed, and sat there smiling huddled behind multiple layers of blankets and pillows all in one episode!

I just love every part of it!????????

Romanticizes Toxic Relationships and Sexual Assault

Let me just say that a plot based around one of the leads being homophobic (regardless of the reasoning) was definitely off putting for me, but I wanted to watch this because it's one of the BL "classics". I should have listened to the warnings because this show is hot garbage and is actively harmful to queer representation in the media.

We have an actual sexual assault in episode one, cool cool. Episode two - more sexual assault, while he is CRYING and asking him to stop. Episode three - more sexual assault - he actually starts to enjoy it this time but guess what? He asked repeatedly to stop before they got to that point. That's still sexual assault. This is the first three episodes.

Episode four - Type says he'll have sex with Tharn to "repay him" so they're "even". WHAT???? I feel like I'm losing braincells. Why would you WANT to have sex with someone who offers to sleep with you to "get it over with"????

Honestly it just perpetuates the completely bogus stereotype that gay people are dangerous rapists and I can't stand that. "I couldn't hold back my feelings" is not an excuse for assaulting someone. And yes, these are 1000000% unquestionably sexual assaults.

People excuse this drama because its "of its time" but it was 2019. Not even four years ago. Not 1980. Consent was a thing.

Even if I wanted to overlook the multiple assaults on Type performed by Tharn (which I don't), they go on to have a completely toxic relationship where they are both completely selfish jerks to one another for the purposes of drama. Type (regardless of his trauma) is an absolutely horrible friend and a completely disastrous partner who is not only hurtful but actively toxic. There's really no other plot to speak of outside of this toxic-for-the-sake-of-entertainment relationship.

I'm convinced at this point that MAME has never seen an actual healthy and functioning queer relationship or just refuses to write anything that isn't toxic. Even for entertainment purposes there is just so much better out there. Stop objectifying and making sexual assault "sexy." It isn't.

Falar de Tharn e Type é como pisar em ovos né? Fandom grande, bastante incomodado, mas algumas coisas precisam ser ditas, pelo menos assim eu acho. eu escrevi uma critica quando assisti mas não achei justo continuar com ela. Essa primeira temporada foi boa, muito boa na verdade. Sim o Type dá uns vacilos enormes que incomodam muito quem esta assistindo e isso é culpa do roteiro que talvez não tenha ( ou tenha) sido muito bem pensado. A produção da serie é realmente boa não deixa a desejar, a parte delicada em se falar de Tharn e Type é a historia, pra os militantes é tremendamente horrorosa, pras tias passadoras de pano é a historia perfeita e pra mim é apenas mais uma historia, sim o ciúmes do Type e a desconfiança do Tharn são insuportáveis. Mas em muitos momentos a gente consegue esquecer tudo isso, os atores são muito bons! a atuação é realmente boa, tanto o antagonista quanto os principais conseguiram vestir a camisa da historia e dar vida a esses personagens tão... interessantes. Obvio que a audiência sabe logo de cara quem é o vilão só que ele consegue cativar tanto que você consegue sentir muito ódio por ele, os casais secundários foram muito bons uma pena não ter um spin off pra cada um, a ost é mediana, mas o que realmente carrega a reputação da serie é a química do casal principal e isso é bom.

The best BL romance ever

I wont talk much about the plot coz obviously its not really new. What makes this drama standout number one is the perfect casting. Apart from
The leads overflowing chemistry the supporting casts were equally significant.

Tharn and type though some parts were overly done, you can hardly notice because the climax scenes were really done well by both actors. The character development of type is what i like most. He was afterall the confused character but how they built his character was pure bliss. I find his love pure and authentic. Regardless how he handled his stages of acceptance it was apparent he was very sure of his feelings both season 1 and 2. I love how he is protrayed as not expressive in words but his actions are more heartwarming in many occasions than tharn.

I highly recommend this to people not familiar with BL dramas. Wish to see them both again in future project

No sé si es la peor serie que he visto, pero definitivamente de las peores.
La trama no es tan mala, tiene potencial, lo malo es el desarrollo de la historia, para empezar, en algunos momentos es MUY lenta, entonces resulta aburrido verla, aunque yo soy una persona que se aburre fácil al ver las series, esto fue otro nivel, me tocaba hacer algo mientras la veía, si no hacía algo me estresaba de lo aburrida que era, solo seguí con ella por la esperanza de que en algún punto de la serie algo interesante pasara, pero esto no pasó en ningún momento, tanto así que no quise ver ni los especiales ni la segunda temporada.
Otra cosa que no me gustó PARA NADA, fue lo tóxica que era la pareja principal, definitivamente eso era lo que más aburría, todos los problemas eran producidos por celos (pero en un nivel alto), así que fastidiaba ver cómo se enojaban porque uno miró a una mosca y no al otro, ya era cansón el tema.
Type, definitivamente su desarrollo en la historia fue muy bueno, me gustó como trataron lo que pasó con seriedad y en ningún momento se burlaron de aquello, pero algunos de los comportamientos que tenía (hablo específicamente de sus celos) era algo que no me gustó PARA NADA, si fuera una serie de hace varios años pensaría: "Bueno, era un pensamiento diferente al de ahora, no lo justifica, pero bueno", PERO ES UNA SERIE DEL 2019, NO ES VIEJA.
Literalmente lo único bueno de la serie es su OST, no he leído la letra de las canciones, por lo que no sé que dicen, pero bueno, las canciones son pegadizas y buenas.
En conclusión definitivamente no la recomiendo, es muy lenta, tiene muchas cosas que son ???? la verdad no entiendo por qué hay tanta gente que la ama, pero bueno, cada quien tiene sus gustos, aunque en lo personal NO LA RECOMIENDO.

mostly about the issue of lhong

i personally like it so much since it got me to thai bl. i especially love the actor's chemistry and their good acting skills. the plot all in all is good, the cinematography is also exceptional. but i was bothered by lhong's character (i love kaownah, he did good in interpreting his character) but what i hate is the fact that tar never got his justice. after everything lhong had done, no consequences at all? i feel sad for his story about the feeling of not being loved but it doesn't hide the fact that he was the reason tar was gang rxped, he could have been gone to jail to suffer from what he had done but then he just went away and when he return and met tharn's brother, he even wished lhong to do good in life, he asked how he's been... like seriously? i don't think it was a good reaction meeting someone who had cause harm to other. rxpe is not something they should just brush off after one admits his sin and apologize. and to mention the sexual assault that happened between tharn and type, it may not seem like it but the first few episodes are bothering. at first i really thought it was nothing serious, prolly becaue of the upbeat background song that made it exciting but in real life no one would really find being assaulted sexually excited. tho i understand that was the plot, the novel and series goes that way as the author wrote. nevertheless i love tharntype & i have been re-watching it a couple of times now, i love also mewgulf so much. they did a good job and i'll be waiting for the season 2.

TharnType is a beautiful and worthwhile story about love and growth

I really can’t believe TharnType is over!

It probably has a lot to do with how much I projected onto Tharn, but the series was a JOURNEY for me.

I don’t think I have ever watched something that made me feel stronger, more complex, and genuinely difficult emotions–or one that I have related to so much. Those things are of course intrinsically linked. With most series, I feel I watch it but am removed from the story; I don’t typically think any of the characters reflect me personally, or have similar experiences to me. But I felt constantly involved with TharnType. Again, I completely projected onto Tharn (something I don’t ever do)–having experienced a lot of the things he did, and having my own complex if much softer relationship with internalized homophobia like Type–and that made this series affect me quite deeply.

That aside, while I have watched series with better writing, the tension and relief were always perfectly executed. And the growth, the arcs! Tharn and Type were so dynamic as characters, and to watch two people work that hard to love each other was really something. The finale knocked me out. Just–insert that post about hating it when fictional characters make me believe in love, you know?

All this to say that TharnType is extremely important to me and I am completely shocked by that since the first time I tried to watch it I turned it off within the first few minutes (right after Type said he “hates gays.”). I am so unbelievably grateful I decided to give it another try. My personal experience with being gay was better articulated in this series than a lot of other queer media I have consumed in all my 23 years.

tl;dr TharnType is a beautiful and worthwhile story about love and growth, and for me personally, it was a genuinely cathartic experience because of how much I can relate my own self, relationships, and experiences to the story.

It’s not an easy show, it’s not an easy story, and it’s not an easy watch.
