This is a cute, fun, sweet romcom about a contract marriage gone awry when mom moves in. The story is hilarious at times and heartfelt at others. There are laughs and tears and some social commentary that is done well and doesn't wind up feeling like an afterschool special. I got exactly what I expected and quite a bit more. Very well done. Often when the 4 leads were arguing about which path to follow, it was impossible to side with one over another because all viewpoints were valid. A great story about love and family and where those fit in society.

"The society is harmonious but I am bullied!"

Director Zero Chou gave a Taiwanese interpretation of how mainland Chinese gay couples are received in We Are Gamily. Her view of the complexities of loving someone that a conservative society will not accept was important but I found the interpretation on the screen lacking.

“Any conflicts and unharmonious relations existing in a society, require us to actively harmonize them to achieve a stable, harmonious, and orderly outcome.”

Wu Gang and Yang Duo are both in relationships that their families would never approve of and that are not believed to contribute to a harmonious society. Gang and Sam have been lovers for over three years as have Duo and Liya. In order to get both of their families off their backs, Gang and Duo marry but continue to live with their lovers. Their plan goes array when their mothers decide they need to have a baby as soon as possible and Gang’s mother moves in with them to push the matter along. How having a live-in mother pressing a couple to have sex would enhance their performance is something I don’t want to know. Neither Sam nor Liya are happy about the new living situations. Complicating matters, Gang’s lesbian sister Rou moves in as well.

The comedic set-up had possibilities but didn’t work for me. The writing, acting, cinematography, music, and sound were all a “C” at best. Ang Lee made a similar movie nearly 25 years before this one on a shoestring budget that delivered a more emotional punch. In a two-hour movie, We Are Gamily had very little character development. Gang and South African Sam had been together for several years but all I knew about them was that they loved each other and had a penchant for phallic shaped art. Duo and Rou had similar development issues, but at least we were told what they did for a living. Ruo and Sam were both ready to rock the boat, while Gang and Duo were more concerned with their mothers’ acceptance.

Gamily started out with a comedic tone and then morphed into a more serious one as the couples began to wonder when they could stop acting and start living their lives. I found it hard to become emotionally invested in the story as Rou and Sam were dragged into the play neither wanted to act in. Rou was the character I could most connect with. She accepted who she was and was willing to live away from home in order to be honest with herself, even if she couldn’t be honest with her family. When societal harmony was brought up, she replied, “The society is harmonious, but I am bullied!”

We Are Gamily was a lighthearted look at a serious subject about being different and upsetting familial and societal harmony, when the lack of “harmony” or sameness should never have been the responsibility of those being judged. The social and familial commentary were elements to appreciate about this film. However, the overly contrived situations, poor camera work, and often terrible sound challenged my attention span.

So this drama had me laughing out loud one minute and feeling the sad weight of society and family pressure the next. I could feel for the brother and sister, but for their mom too. I mean, how hard to have one gay child in a restrictive communist country, let alone two! For Chinese people family is the number one important thing, especially the family lineage and continuing the line through the grandchildren. So imagine how hard to find out that both of your children are gay and are in fake marriages! But on the other hand imagine feeling desperate enough to get married just for the sake of trying to please your family and society. I liked the movie and that it explored those things but at the same time I don’t think that they really develop the characters much beyond the fact that they were “gay “. The female characters got the most development and personality. But the gay men characters had no backstory, had no motivation. Beyond finding out that one was from South Africa, that’s about all the personal information you got on them. So from the standpoint of why their relationship was so important, I didn’t feel as much connection to them. But overall it was a good movie. Could’ve been developed more if it had been a tv series, maybe.

U MUST WATCH!

This movie i was avoiding from a long time as I felt it is average but when I actually watched it it was.......hell good. THE acting of actors are perfect they are so much into their roles. They put forth all social problems face by these people in real life in country like china and many . It puts the ideas of ancient people and thoughts of narrow minded people. It is fun to watch with comedy scenes . This movie is the perfect combination of all emotions . It also shows great friendship between, and and a family affection. The ending is very beautiful. We must know that we are living in a modern and forward society. society with equality for all. Then why look down with others . They are living their life harmoniously and we should do the same . We SHOULD support each individual in order to develop the nation. at at last we should not judge people with narrow mind.

not comedy as expected

I was surprised by this movie。 I expected a light-hearted comedy but it was really a serious look at the problems gay people have in being ’’out’’ and living together and being accepted by parents in a very conservative Chinese society。I was very surprised the Chinese censors would allow movies that deal with this topic although sexual contact between the partners was not at all explicitー then I saw this was actually a Taiwanese movie so it gave a false impression attitudes in China could be changed。obviously that remains untrue、 so it was rather misleading in that way。 as to the movie itself、 I did not think the acting or direction was very good unfortunately。 for me the actors were rather unconvincing in their roles and the acting was wooden。 the production values were low。 however it must be praised for being very brave in tackling a serious topic。it is just a pity that this is gives a very false impression that attitudes are being or can be changed in China〜 it is more like the Taiwanese or western world hope China will change its attitude to homosexuality but there is very little evidence of this in real life、 although it is not illegal as such and there was a long history of same sex relationships in China before attitudes changed in Twentieth Century. unfortunately the same thing happened in Japan after introduction of western attitudes in Nineteenth Century、although now it is improving。 the attitudes here and in China have just try to ignore reality。
