really wonderful watch, part one

A story of mages and magic with both western and wuxia elements woven together. Recommended for fantasy lovers. Excellent world-building by the Hong Sisters ( their 13th script). Good CGI. An insanely cool soundtrack with a huge range, by the great Nam Hye Seung. Classy cinematography throughout never misses a beat -- a big budget production by Studio Dragon. 2022-3. Comical, thrilling and cute with a really epic romance, you can skip the intellectual understory or be amused by it. Classic Hong Sisters.

In two parts, not seasons. Likewise two separate reviews here on mdl are as one. 30 eps at 1hr.20mins ea. = about 40hrs watch-time. Part One is 20 eps and Part Two is 10. Its all, both parts, worth it.

Lee Jae Wook. then 24, took the world by storm as the ML, Jang Uk. LJW is a meticulous, skilled, flexible and charismatic actor. Jung So Min plays one-half of the FL (I wont list all of their names); a powerful, intelligent and experienced actress, together with LJW she took the series to a higher level. The gorgeous Go Yun Jung, the other half of the FL, begins and ends the series with great panache.

Out of many great performances in the main and supporting casts I would pick out three favourites. Shin Seung Ho, as the Crown Prince, actually carries the main plot through Part One, more so than the adorable lovers. Jo Jae Yoon, as the discontent Jin Mu, is the most wonderful creepy villain ever, a consistent scene-stealer. And Im Chul Soo as the hempen Master Lee, the Hong Sisters' "deus ex machina", stole everyone's hearts just a little.

How can there be two actresses and one FL? Easily. The body of the first actress is destroyed and via the 'alchemy of souls' the soul of the first actress (Go Yun Jung as Naksu) inhabits the body of the second (Jung So Min as Mudeok) for Part One. Or, to put it another way, Jung So Min portrays the soul of Naksu inside the body of Mudeok.

The 'alchemy of souls' goes beyond the standard body swap. Forbidden sorcery, the powerful use it to steal new bodies and they employ skilled assassins to dispose of the unfortunate souls trapped in their old bodies. At different points the FL and ML are employed to kill one end or the other of this devils bargain.

How is our identity connected to our souls or our bodies? The Hong sisters pose this question off and on again in their inimitable way through this whole series. Is who you are due to genetics? Is it due to your life experiences in this body? Is your soul, in this popular sense it means consciousness -- is your consciousness separate from your body? Do you have a destiny and does that pertain to your body or your soul/consciousness, or do you create that from the choices you make as you move forward? These questions are not limited to vague popular ideas of reincarnation throughout Asia or to the theological conundrums of body and soul that leak into horror and occult films in the West. Its all one.

So, therefore; the ML was conceived while his father's body was forcibly and temporarily occupied by the soul of a creepy king near death. Is Jang Uk the son of his father, a great skilled mage who crossed a line in his magical practice, or is Jang Uk the son of the previous king and since the childless king's brother acceded to the throne, thus a cousin (mentally/physically..which?) to the current Crown Prince ?

So, therefore; the FL, a skilled assassin, mortally wounded, performs the alchemy of souls on the nearest healthy woman she can find. She wakes up in the body of a blind woman named Mudeok being sold to a brothel/pleasure house for debts, temporarily disoriented and mildly amnesiac. The energy of her soul as Naksu can heal the blindness and her memories return slowly, but neither memory or soul can restore to her the lost athlete's body.

Fate brings our soulmates together not without a lot of noisy complaining by both. The merry flirtatious upper class Jang Uk, desperately seeking a master who will open his gate of energy, suddenly recognizes a girl attacking him with a crab leg as soul-shifter by the blue marks in her irises.

The rest is an enormously fun show. Enjoy. Since I am doing two revuews for two parts, hint hint, an absolutely enormous cliffhanger ending to part one which cannot be revealed heer can be gently hinted at in the part two review.

so refreshing and fun! wachtend 2 times

this was my first kdrama ever.
this is one of my best series ever, most likely because the main character seems a little silly and i feel similarities with her chaotic character.
the amount of playful romance and emotional breakdowns there was and i barly cry in series but this got me bawling and kicking my feet.
the reel love for slow learning eachother and healthy wants and needs for eachother are so AMAZING i just love it.
the show shows a healthy normal ( with mistakes) human life.
its healing to see a man ( that isnt real ofc but idc) that devoted to learn to get to know a girl

I loved this kdrama. I actually gave it a shot after my TikTok was just all about it and honestly I don't regret it. It was actually really nice and although the last episode might have had some unnecessary plot I didn't want to read too much into it and chose to enjoy the moment and not criticize it ( I get that it might have hit some sore spots but tbh it is a fictional show so there's no point in being all emotional about it and forgetting the good parts of the drama)
All in all it was a wholesome drama and also my first drama of the year ( just because I refuse to watch any drama before it's fully released??)
I really liked it thanks to the actors, producers and the whole team for this show?

Another decent fantasy drama with a bad ending!

Honestly, this should've been only 16 episodes, and with a better writer, could've been so much better!

Overall, it's nothing special, but a lot of fun. The first 2 episodes were CRAZY, 10 episode worth of story in 2. I don't even understand why they did that.

The main plot is predictable as usual, but the characters were good.

The main problem with the show, yet again, is the inconsistent writing. They could've solved the problem in the finale easily, but no, let's do another time-jump instead, and don't use the ML's father who finally back to his old self and probably didn't die, just sleeping with his lover forever!

The last episode was a MESS! I mean, if they wanted to kill the FL, sure, do it, but don't use the same old reincarnation trope. It's so lazy, not to mention, makes no sense. What's the point of them reunite again in the future if they could've done the same in the past? You either give the viewer a happy ending or a sad ending, but not a copy and paste ending.

I know the writer won't see this, but my God, this whole: "I see your future and one of you will die, because you met in a place."

Dude, they didn't even meet there first. They met as little kids! The whole point of why she has to die is the biggest plot-hole in the story.

Jung So Min é impecável.

Eu amei absolutamente TUDO nesse drama. O romance é lindo, me fez rir, chorar, me emocionar e torcer pelos personagens do início ao fim.

LONG thread debunking this whole mess before MBC releases a statement (if they do):

1. It began this way: I translated the image and it said the opposite: "Korean militants kidnapped by Izmael + the arrow goes from Izmael to Paltima"

2. I couldn't find a single article about this in Korean. Only comments from Koreans shocked at the misinformation. Also, a choice like this likely comes from higher-ups, not necessarily the director or the writer. Throwing shade at Israel's government too seems risky, and it's surprising that Koreans are the ones who dared. If this fake news was true, let me tell you: The staff isn't as free as you think they are. Why would they risk so much, by their own will? It doesn't make any sense. Let me tell you: Do you even realize how important the international audience is, compared to the Korean one? This would literally be the best way to get the entire crew's career ruined from a boycott. Even MBC would get into big troubles. It wouldn't just be about "getting their money."

3. A Korean said that it's part of the web novel, but the web novel ended not long before Israel started bombing Gaza. However, if this claim is true (they used a translator so it could be inaccurate), the drama has nothing to do with it, although they could have changed the names for sure and it is unlikely that they are unaware to the point of not realizing (I think that MBC is supposed to check the content before release too). Even if Korea usually seems to be unaware or misinformed about what happens overseas.

4. The only post in Korean that claims this fake news is a tweet with 30K likes and only international comments (the original tweet that started everything). They say that the arrow shows Izmael being bombed. This is FALSE. Just like this article which didn't fact check anything. Also, if Lily Alice already didn't have a good reputation, this is by far her worst. Thankfully, there are people like me who used their common sense and media literacy skills when the so-called journalists couldn't, nor did they take any responsability. Others (way too many, which is concerning) are spamming (with the help of bots but they are being cleared by MDL apparently) the drama of 1/10s on sites such as MDL and IMDB along with writing hateful comments and harassing the cast/production team/broadcaster.

5. I watched the scene. Here's what the presenter says: "[...] The ongoing Paltima airstrikes are taking place in Izmael (more like from but it's not "wrong"), where Korean nationals have been kidnapped by armed militants. (implies who are the bad ones) [...]” Time: 1:01:19, Episode 12 - Netflix translation

6. https://x.com/Yeonseok411_IFC/status/1875859602530763112. It seems that Netflix messed up and they corrected the English translation. Explanation for the possible mistranslation: https://x.com/sjsskaz/status/1875763260169056482.

7. "but a specific scene from the last episode has sparked outrage from international viewers." International is key here.

8. https://mydramalist.com/discussions/the-number-you-have-dialed/133942-netflix-mistranslated-izmael-kidnapped-koreans?pid=3219108&page=1#p3219108- A more detailed translation. (from Badass Bunny, scroll down to the Twitter DMs screenshots) - The sentence is ambiguous because of the Korean language, and because the news are presented in a quick and straightforward manner. Here, the context to clarify the sentence is on the image.

9. I watched the scene where we see the kidnappers and they clearly aren't Palestinians. But well, it's not like the sentence on the bottom of the image wasn't clear enough. There was no controversy about this in Korea, so unless the situation is bad enough, MBC won't say anything because that's how it usually works. They will be the ones to speak up if it's needed because the crew can't reach a wide audience, they don't even have public SNS. Korean communication also can be very bizarre, so I can't explain it any better. Hopefully they will say something to stop this nonsense.

10. I'm not against the original intent. They would have received so many praises for being brave and noble if it wasn't for this fake news, along with the mistranslation from Netflix (how surprising coming from them...I'm joking). It was their only way to do it, indirectly of course, in a fictional scenario. You couldn't expect more than what was shown whatsoever for obvious reasons. It was still a good choice originally to bring awareness by influencing K-Drama fans, and most importantly it could spark discussion in Korea, especially for those still unaware or misinformed. I can't know if there was anything else going on behind this choice. It's hypocritical how people wanted such things in media, but now that they believed those lies, even if they somehow get to the truth, they will still talk shit. Whoever decided that, little did they know what Netflix would do... Truly evil if not a mistake.

11. https://x.com/ma42401494/status/1875589432239386740 Here's the "Korean" tweet. There is actually 0 Korean comment. The account is not Korean (they even posted a screenshot showing the MDL page with the cast, you can see what time they posted). The only retweet in Korean is also not a Korean account. People BELIEVE this account is Korean. Hence why they trust it. Hence my clarifications.

12. This comment is from a Korean: https://mydramalist.com/article/when-the-phone-rings-sparks-outrage-for-misrepresentation-of-israel-palestine-conflict#comment-20093496

13. Some people are so obsessed with hating on the drama and find reasons to be scandalized. So they started using "Argan" as an argument. Don't tell me you're offended by that. "Argan" sounds cool, that's it. It's most likely taken from the web novel, too. Fictional names are often inspired from real ones and usually, poor countries or countries with a war situation tend to be either in Africa or Middle East, and that does not mean every country is like that, it's just some parts. Also because it's more believable. Not to mention that "Argan" is not necessarily taken from Afghanistan. The hate against K-Dramas truly goes crazy. Literally no one was offended by that initially- oh wait, maybe on MDL. Just a quick research, one example out of many: "Homeland" (2011–2020): This TV show often uses real countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq as settings for terrorism, war, and espionage narratives. - THEY USED THE REAL NAMES, HOW SCANDALIZING! Oh wait no, it's not a Korean drama so it's fine.

14. I remembered that I do know someone Korean from a community on Discord so I asked him too even though we were not friends. He confirmed the fake news and I got informations that helped me write this thread - including the fact that many young people in Korea support Palestine. I wonder where are the complaints if the fake news is true? Because all I can see are Koreans shocked at the misinformation :)

15. Even ChatGPT agrees without the context of the image. -> "Breaking news: In Izmael, where the Paltima airstrikes are taking place, Koreans have been kidnapped by armed forces."

16. I'm actually unsure what was the first translation or if it was ever corrected. I'm wondering if the account on Twitter just decided to crucify them because of some ambiguity. If so, it's even worse than I initially thought.

17. https://mydramalist.com/article/when-the-phone-rings-sparks-outrage-for-misrepresentation-of-israel-palestine-conflict#comment-20109222 - Another comment like mine, sorry for the ones I missed.

18. "Breaking news: In Ismail, where airstrikes are taking place against/on Paltima, South Koreans have been kidnapped by militants." -> This should be the version without any ambiguity. The current translation is still ambiguous, because while it implies that Koreans are kidnapped by Izmael, therefore implying as well that the airstrikes are against Paltima, it's not clear enough. I hope they can update the translation to something clearer soon. It's not like foreigners understand what's on the image nor do they use a Google Translate app to fact check, even though they should, with how obviously false it seems that they would do this.

19. https://mydramalist.com/766179-the-number-you-have-dialed#comment-20147240 - This person also spoke the truth about how not all Koreans are ignorant or support Israel. Many support Palestine (especially the younger generation) and not as many support Israel like some liars want you to think because of their hateful biases. With Korea's history, it sounds more right for them to support Palestine.

Edit: Their comment has been deleted just like mine. (on the drama's page) It's unfortunate because they shared links.

20. I can't find this comment anymore (not from me)...thankfully I saved it: Also, they aren't profitting with this scene, they voiced their support to Palestine, as it was clearly a pro-Palestine scene. Why change the name and not include real country names? Because they know very well not to mingle in politics, since they could get cancelled so hard, that your attempts in the comments are literally nothing compared to what government would do to the crew and actors. Haven't you seen the recent presidential news? No celebrity could voice their opinion out load, that's why they made a bold move with the scene to voice their support. But, you do what? Boycott? Boycott their way of Palestine support? Time to reflect on yourself.

21. Blame Netflix, the so-called journalists, the original tweet and haters not willing to fact check either, not anyone else.

Quite predictible

This is for the ones who like a story told slowly, without twists and turns. I find Easter character hard to watch because of the acting style. I do think he is a good actor, maybe director's fault. He acts childishley and it is not appealing, quite the contrary. His reactions to P'Hill are quite the same until the end. Actually this couple does not evolve too much. What happens with P'Hills family is unclear as well as how it affects the couple. I do like the actors though. North is a much better character that evolves throught the series and he is more natural, acting more his age. I prefer him and P'Jo for this series.

Badass Woman in The Lost Time

Queen Woo, is a drama about a woman who does her filial piety to her family in marriage and luckily found love there, but it's all being cut short because all of the BS happens in the palace. So, the only thing she can do is surviving, but she'd eventually done more than that, she is thriving in the midst of the chaos. Basically, story of a strong woman in the era of crazies. Not white, not black, but got the layers of the greys. Set in the Goguryeo era, based on a true historic moment, film with good quality actors, settings, props, camera angle, costumes, and acting from the actors, I really have no complain about what my eyes can see.
Buttttt,
After I read few of the reviews above, I have to agree, the story line and the depth of the character is too shallow (maybe it's caused by their plan it to be an 8 episodes drama). And I think I could live with a little less nude scene. I will add one more flaw in the drama, which is for as story from a strong woman who go against the current I don't think showing too much parts of women body throughout the show is not a good image to build. I mean, I never against nudity or s3x scene, at least they are shown for a reason. If I have to compare it with GOT, I must say that the nude scenes and s3x scenes there really are happened within reasoning, because with it we can understand the characters, the story-line, the feelings and the dramas more. I must say that the Queen Woo's story is so interesting, I really love it, but well............. it has flaws too. Not trying to compare the two countries (hahaha) but I guess I get used to experience some crappy colossal C-drama, and found this daring-try-to be-dark K-drama to be refreshing. I think some people judge dramas based on the controversies to be not fair, I meannnnn, I know this drama has flaws, but I don't think the rating and the real flaws are in match. Maybe we need to learn to judge more objective, take a step back, calm your mind and see the view from a broader perspective.

Just when you think it’s over, Surprise!

Sword and fairy is a great story line. It has several of my favorite actors. I enjoy watching Xu Kai go from one era of character to another modern day and it always works. He is not stuck in one character type. Great acting!

Esther Yu is new on my radar and is beautiful. She will be added to be favor actors to watch list.

This story is definitely different than the other and just when you think it’s done there is another twist and I loved it! most of the time you can predict, but this was a nice surprise. good job to the writer of the story.

Great concept but poor execution!

To be honest, I was expecting much more from this drama. The start was great, but the drama became boring very quickly, so I had to start skipping scenes. I really liked the past story mixed with the present. I wasn't keen on the idol part, as it was not very interesting and did not add much to the story. Also, I loved the brothers, but I was not a fan of the main female lead, as I did not like her portrayal of the character. I would prefer it if they concentrated more on the brothers' story. The drama has a great concept but failed to execute it well. Also, they could have done a better job of lip-singing, as every time the female lead sang, it felt strange.
For me, it was a waste a time.
