(I will be comparing to the anime since I didn't read the manga)
+++++POSITIVES+++++
+ The actors did an amazing job! I'm not a big fan of Kubota Masataka but he is one of the best actors to play mentally disturbed. The way he goes all out in acting completely insane, amazes me. Good work! All the other actors were very believable as well. They found the perfect cast for this LAA
+ The way they portrayed the whole setting gave a very uncomfortable and creepy atmosphere which I think is something the anime did well but the LAA did better. Although the anime has some light moments, this goes all out in making the viewer feel the darkness which automatically brands this into pure horror. Don't get me wrong, the constant horror atmosphere is not a bad thing because they did it well.
+ Making an anime arc into a movie is not easy but they did a good job. I feel like they captured all the necessary milestones while keeping everything relevant and then wrapping it up nicely, leaving room for a sequel but not necessarily needing one.
+ The props were great. The contacts and the gore looked very realistic and it didn't look proppy at all.
+ There's a car crash scene that looks super lit!
-----NEGATIVES-----
- Kubota Masataka delivered a great performance but over did it slightly. I miss the warmer part of Kaneki Ken which they didn't include in this movie. Even when he wasn't going completely mental, Masataka displayed Ken as a very disturbed person even before he turned into a ghoul which isn't how I remember him.
- The CG is not the best but it's not the worst. They really did their best on the special effects but I would lie if I said that they didn't bother me. It kind of brought down the quality a bit
- Another thing I felt brought down the quality was the fighting scenes. The sound effects were off and the actors didn't stage the hits properly so it all kind of looked a bit ridiculous. Stage fighting is not an easy task but with some proper editing, mistakes can be hidden. Instead, the producers tried to highlight the punches leading into an exposure of all the mistakes.
===== SUMMARY =====
Here we go...
A great live action adaption that captured all the necessities from the first season of the anime and kept it all unraveling smoothly. I didn't feel like they missed anything from the anime and the red thread was there throughout the entire film. The actors did a great job and the props and the gore were perfect. It made everything look realistic and definitely sent me into a horror frenesi. Although the writers only managed to capture the dark side of the story, they did an amazing job with the atmosphere making it into a great horror film. The CG and the fighting scenes needed some work but we can't have everything in this world, now can we?
~~~~~ RECOMMEND TO ~~~~~
I recommend this to people with strong stomachs who like dark, bloody horror with a plot. You will see some gory and disgusting visuals along with some really disturbing people eating people footage. Not to mention the creepy red eyed creatures lurking in the darkness and vomiting ghouls.
ENJOY!!
