I get up again, over and over - Madonna
I am older than dirt. An American gay male who stumbled into the world of Asian gay cinema, Boys Love, and even a little K-Pop long past the point in life where those kind of discoveries generally take place. It has been a revelation. Something in me reacts to and connects with the former listed mediums in a powerful way far beyond what I ever felt when consuming Western fare. The best BLs seem to be telling MY story, focusing on feelings I would have had if I'd allowed myself to experience them fully at a young age.
People often say "age is just a number." I find that statement too reductive, but it contains a lot of truth. I want to never stop learning, growing, experiencing new things, right up to the time I croak. This mind and heart-expanding exploration of gay Asian, live-action story-telling is part of that wanting.
I enjoy angst, tension, extreme emotions, transgressive plot lines, daring themes, and sexually fearless story-telling. Art that pisses people off is essential. Examining WHY you're pissed off is a tremendously effective way of learning. Live-action stories inspire these types of discussion in a way nothing else does.
I abhor censorious, sex-phobic prudes who aim to control the content and form of what the rest of us get to consume as art. These people turn up in every generation, like roaches, under new names and using new excuses for their intrusive busy-bodiness. But they're easy to spot and bright light is an effective deterrent to their spread.
Asian gay cinema and BL forever!
