The film is set in the mountainous regions of the western Hunan province in the early 1980s. At the film's start, a young man begins his first journey as a postman at the mountainous rural areas of the aforesaid regions. His father, a veteran postman, forced to retire due to a bad knee, decides to accompany him together with the family's faithful dog, Buddy.  

Studying in Hong Kong but living in Shenzhen (the port city of Mainland China), Peipei has spent 16 years in her life travelling between these two cities. To realize the dream of seeing snow in Japan with her bestie, Peipei joins a smuggling gang and uses her student identity to smuggle iPhones from Hong Kong to Mainland. They experience love, lust, betrayal, and sufferings in the background of Mao-era songs and dances. The two key characters, Feng Liu and Xiaoping He, also participate in the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979 and become heroes for their act of courage. After the war, they are honorably discharged from the Army but struggle to make ends meet in the Reform-era China while they learn lessons from soul-crashing experiences of love, lust, betrayal, and heartbreak.

"City of Life and Death" takes place in 1937, during the height of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Imperial Japanese Army has just captured the then-capital of the Republic of China, Nanjing. What followed was known as the Nanjing Massacre, or the Rape of Nanjing, a period of several weeks wherein tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed. The film tells the story of several figures, both historical and fictional, including a Chinese soldier, a schoolteacher, a Japanese soldier, a foreign missionary, and John Rabe, a Nazi businessman who would ultimately save thousands of Chinese civilians. 

In Shanghai, China, 1939, Madam Mo Jie Yu has wealth and power, but she doesn't have love. Wealthy playboy Xie Yi Fan pursues Madam Mo Jie Yu among many other ladies. In a fictional universe comprising of ten nations, seeing that the neighbouring country is becoming more and more powerful, a warlord organises a competition to reveal the best warriors. This drama is a about a man who was born to the slave class during the Goryeo Dynasty, overruling the feudalist government that had been in power for over 60 years and becomes the most powerful man in the country.

"Romance of the Western Chamber" is a 1927 silent Chinese film drama directed by Hou Yao, it is a story of young lovers consummating their love without parental approval. The film is an adaption of the classic Chinese dramatic work "Romance of the West Chamber" by Wang Shi Fu.

The Crossing is a two-part Chinese-Hong Kong historical romance war drama, telling the story of various people trying to flee Shanghai to the island of Taiwan at the end of World War II.  It is based on the sinking of the steamer "Taiping" in 1949.  The incident led to the deaths of over 1,500 passengers and crew.  

The film is adapted from the true story of Li Yong Gan and Ma Hao Ran (in drama Li Bin and Zhou Chun). It tells the story of a pair of deaf-mute people who met through the Internet and became a couple.

"The Founding of a Republic" recounts the Chinese history from 1945 to 1949. In 1945, after the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Mao Ze Dong and members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) travel to Chongqing for a meeting with Chiang Kai Shek and the Kuomintang (KMT). The following year, Chiang Kai Shek calls for a National Assembly in Nanjing and is elected as President of the Republic of China (ROC). At the same time, the peace negotiations between the CPC and KMT fail, and the civil war continues. In May 1948, the CPC declares the opening of a "War of Liberation" against Chiang's ROC government, with many other political parties responding to the call and taking the CPC's side.  More political docu-drama than drama this movie coincided with the People's Republic Of China's 60th anniversary.
