When asked about what she has learned through her work, Han Seung Yeon, a member of the group KARA and an actress, replied during a recent interview, "The time I spent as an actress has become longer than my time as a singer. I feel both excitement and pressure about how the audience will perceive this film and whether they will choose to watch it."
Released on July 5th, My Worst Neighbor is a romantic comedy that tells the story of would-be musician Seung Jin (Lee Ji Hoon), who shares his daily life with Hong Ra Ni (Han Seung Yeon), a figure designer, separated only by a thin, soundproof wall. Han Seung Yeon portrays Ra Ni, a figure designer who works from home 24/7 due to her social anxiety disorder caused by past emotional scars.
My Worst Neighbor is a remake of the 2016 French film "Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément" ("Blind Date"). Han Seung Yeon introduced the differences from the original, saying, "Except that a wall appears in this film, everything else is different. In the original, Ra Ni is depicted as sexy, but she is a small, protective character that triggers maternal instincts here."
Regarding the character with social anxiety disorder, she stated, "In fact, many people suffer from it to the extent that it doesn't seem unusual. Even people around me are struggling with it. Therefore, capturing the characteristics of anxiety wasn't very difficult."
In real life, Han Seung Yeon and Lee Ji Hoon, who breathe life into My Worst Neighbor are close friends, born in the same year, 1988. Han Seung Yeon purposely distanced herself from Lee Ji Hoon during filming, believing their friendship would be a distraction in their performances.
Han Seung Yeon also mentioned Go Gyu Pil, who plays Gu Ji Woo, Seung Jin's unique friend in the film. She said, "On set, I envied Go Gyu Pil sunbaenim (senior actor). He could make people laugh with a simple 'Um!' even without significant lines. I said I was envious, and he jokingly replied, 'I'm sorry, but you won't make it in this life. Let's talk after you gain back 40kg.'"
Han Seung Yeon is active not only as an actress but also as a singer. Last year, KARA made a surprising comeback to celebrate their 15th anniversary as a complete group. She mentioned that the filming period of "Intimate Strangers" overlapped with the preparations for the group's comeback, and she expressed gratitude to her fellow members and the company for allowing her to do both simultaneously.
Han Seung Yeon is growing as both an actress and a singer. She humbly mentioned that she still has a long way to go and expressed her hopes and expectations. She said, "My filmography is currently revving up its engine. Although this project may have some shortcomings, I am grateful it has been well-received. I look forward to my next projects."
