Shark Episode 18 Recap

Shark Episode 18 begins with a reminder of the battle between Jo Sang Deuk and Han Yi Soo.

Episode18

Yi Soo breaks into the old bookstore. He looks for any evidence that will destroy Chun Young Bo and his partner, Choi Byung Ki, the deadly pen assassin, but what he finds shocks him – a photo. Yi Soo stares at an old photo of his father and bookstore owner. He is in shock. The two men look like good friends.



Restaurant
Meanwhile Hae Woo meets the late Professor Kang Hee Soo’s psychiatrist. She tells Hae Woo that Professor Kang feared the torturer called the Shadow the most. Psychiatrist said, “But I can tell you that he was very afraid of the clicking sound that ballpoint pens make. He said he'd always heard that sound whenever he was tortured.” Hae Woo interrupts her to ask a question about the torturer. Psychiatrist continues recalling Professor Kang’s story “It seems someone always stood beside The Shadow and watched him torture people.” (Hmm interesting, Han Young Man was the face of the torturer, but was he really doing the torturing?)


 
Dark Street near the River

Detective Kim Soo Hyun is tied up in the front seat. Choi Byung Ki sits behind him with a gun pointing to his head. He claims that he was not the one who tortured his dad, the late Professor Kang Hee Soo. It was Yi Soo’s father, Han Young Man. He shows him that same photo.


Jo Family Mansion
Jo Sang Deuk is at home setting up the game Go again. He says out loud, “Hmm, I made a mistake.” (What does he mean? I have never seen him play the game Go with any one.)
Prosecutor Jo continues her investigation at home.  She finds out that Professor Kang Hee Soo was protesting when he was a college student. Hae Woo calls her secretary to find out the names of the late Professor Kang Hee Soo’s classmates who were also arrested during the protest.


City Street

Detective Kim recalls the words that the bookstore owner told him about Yi Soo’s father. It was Yi Soo’s father was tortured and interrogated Detective Kim’s father. Detective Kim shook his head. He refused to believe it. Detective Kim runs to Yi Soo’s apartment building. He needs to confront Yi Soo about this situation.


Yi Soo’s apartment
Yi Soo calls Jo Sang Deuk to let him know he found the photo. Jo Sang Deuk said, “How do you feel after seeing the photo?” Yi Soo replied, “You've succeeded in surprising me, but that's it. In any case, Choi Byung Ki worked for you. So there's a good chance that he knew my father too.” Yi Soo brush off the thought that his father could be a torturer. Yi Soo reminiscence about his father’s final words. “When I think about how hurt you'll feel when you find out, I feel so bad.” Was Han Young Man talking about his past or about the murder of Professor Kang Hee Soo? Suddenly the door bell rings, Yi Soo looks at the live cam to see who was outside the door, but no one was there. Apparently, Detective Kim rang the doorbell. But he changed his mind about confronting him. Perhaps he needs more time to think and gather his thoughts.
 
Police Station
ProsecutorJo and Detective Byeon find out that they have already met the late Professor Kang Hee Soo’s college classmate, Professor Yoon Byung Ho.  He was the one that gave them detail information about Chun Young Bo.
 
Professor Yoon Byung Ho Apartment
Detective Kim stands outside Professor Yoon Byung Ho’s apartment. He shows him the same photo , Choi Byung Ki (the bookstore owner/killer) gave him. Detective Kim wanted to know if the man who tortured him is in the photo. Detective Kim asked him if he knew both men. Unfortunately, he only recognize one man and that was Han Young Man, Yi Soo’s dad.
 
Once Detective Kim learns that Choi Byung Ki may have told the truth about Han Young Man. He slowly walks away. He wanders around in a park. He cannot wrap his mind around what he just learned. Is it possible that Yi Soo is just like his father or could it be that Yi Soo never knew his father was a torturer?
His phone rings. He looks at the caller ID. He knows it is Yi Soo, but it doesn’t answer it right away.
 
Restaurant
Prosecutor Jo and Detective Byeon meet with Professor Yoon again. Prosecutor Jo showed Professor Yoon a picture of Choi Byung Ki (the bookstore owner/killer). He told her he never met that person. But earlier that day, a young man (Detective Kim) came to his door and showed a photo of that man and the Shadow.
 
Yi Soo’s Apartment
DetectiveKim finally got the courage to face Yi Soo. He asked Yi Soo for some soju.
 
Parking Garage
ProsecutorJo and Detective Byeon walk to the car. They both wonder if Yi Soo was the one who showed Professor Yoon the photo. Prosecutor Jo realizes that Yi Soo is not the person with the photo, but perhaps the son of the late Professor Kang Hee Soo. To change the mood, Hae Woo asked about Yi Soo’s sister, Yi Hyun. Detective Byeon said she had “cabin fever.” Hae Woo felt a little guilty for not visiting her since the kidnapping.
 
Yi Soo’s apartment
Yi Soo told Detective Kim he wanted him to do some research for him earlier, but decided to do it on his own.  Detective Kim insisted he'll do the research.  The moment turned sad when Detective Kim reflect about his life. He escaped from the orphanage, but Yi Soo  found him and put him on the right track. He remembered the words Yi Soo told him, “'Let's uncover the truth together and set things right again. And to do that, we need to become strong.'” Then he added, “You also told me that we both lost our dads to the same person.” (Han Young Man never killed anyone. He perhaps was Choi Byung Ki’s failing student.)
 

Detective Kim appreciate the work and effort Yi Soo had made for him. Without Yi Soo, Detective Kim would not have a job with the Prosecutor’s Office or went to college. He knows deep down inside that there is more to Choi Byung Ki story. He will stick by his big brother's, Yi Soo, side until they “find out the truth and set things right again.” Detective Kim Soo Hyun stands up to leave. Yi Soo asked him if anything was wrong. Soo Hyun lied and said nothing was wrong.  Yi Soo told him to be careful because Choi Byung Ki knows that he is Kang Hee Soo’s son.  



Before he left he asked why were both their fathers’ killed in different ways. Han Young Man was poisoned, but Kang Hee Soo was strangled. Yi Soo never thought about that. He was confused a bit, then he changed the conversation. He asked how the Chief Prosecutor was doing. Detective Kim Soo Hyun said he was slowly recovering. Then Yi Soo said, “If only we can get him to testify against Chairman Jo…”
 
Hospital
A strange man walks toward Chief Prosecutor Oh’s room. He sees the two un-arm guards standing near by.
 
ProsecutorJo Hae Woo’sCar
Yi Soocalls Hae Woo. He tells her that they need more guards around Chief Prosecutor Oh. He is their only witness to finding out who the real Chun Young Bo is.
 
Jo Sang Deuk’s Study

Jo Sang Deuk tells Director Oh Joon Young that he wants him to lead his new foundation for the handicapped or disadvantaged people.  His son-in-law, Director Oh, agreed..


Hospital

The strange man shows his detective badge to the guards. He creeps into Chief Prosecutor Oh’s room. He looks around his hospital bed.  The man grabs Chief Oh’s oxygen mask.


 He hears voices outside Chief Prosecutor Oh’s room.  Drunk Dong Soo stumbles in the room. He tells everyone he was a good friend of Oh Joon Young. Then he looks at the unknown man and asked who was he? He asked the man twice. He never answered. 


The strange man walks out the room and crosses paths with the daughter-in-law, Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo.  He takes a glance at her and keeps walking.


Outside the Hospital

The strange man crosses paths with the son, Director Oh Joon Young. He is on the phone. Joon Young overhears him, “It's me, Mr. Chairman. It wasn't a good time. I'm sorry.” Joon Young looks back at the man. 


Suddenly, another man runs toward Director Oh Joon Young. 


Chief Oh’s Hospital Room
Dong Soo worries about Secretary Jang. So he asked Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo can someone go to jail for planting listening devices. Hae Woo realize that someone must have bugged Yi Soo’s room. But he slipped up and implied it was Yi Soo (Kim Jun), but quickly changed his mind and said he wasn’t talking about him.
 
Outside the Hospital

A reporter is talking to Director Oh Joon Young. He asked him if his wife, Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo, and Kim Jun, Director of Giant Hotel, really close because his editor-in-chief has proof of their relationship. Oh Joon Young got offended and grab the reporter by his collar and told him, “I'm going to say this only once, so listen carefully. Whether it's true or false, if you ever say such things again... you will face not only legal action, but my wrath too. Get my drift?” (Wow, Oh Joon Young don’t take no crap when it comes to his family and friends.)  Joon Young walks away. The reporter calls his editor-in-chief and said the story seemed to be true.


Chief Oh’s Hospital Room
Hae Woo talks to her father-in-law. She told him she got the picture and understood why he sent them to her. Then Joon Young walked in. He wasn’t pleased to see his wife in his father’s room. He asked her why she came. She lied and said she wanted to see her father-in-law and was worried about him. But Joon Young saw through her lies and told her to leave. (Hmm, I don’t blame Joon Young. He has asked her countless times to visit and suddenly out of the blue she comes without him asking.)
 
Prosecutor’sOffice
ChiefKim Soo Hyun does a background check on Han Young Man,Yi Soo and Yi Hyun’s father.
 

Yi Hyun’s bedroom


Yi Hyun looks up at the night sky. Yi Hyun reminiscence sabout the first time Soo Hyun said, “You like me, don't you? I like you too.” Then her nose starts to bleed.


 Yi Soo’s apartment


Yi Soo has a nightmare. His dreams include his father’s death and his best friend, Soo Hyun words, “Why was a different method used to kill my father?” The sound of the doorbell wakes him.  A note was shoved under the door. He picks it up and looks at the live cam. Hae Woo can barely stayed up outside his door. She calls him a jerk and then falls out. He picks her up and takes her to his bed. 


He buttons up her blouse and lays beside her. (Hmm, I’m glad Yi Soo did not fall for her trick. Hae Woo got drunk on purpose. If Yi Soo had sex with her, she can say she was drunk. I don’t trust her action in this scene one bit. She should have went home.)  The next morning, Hae Woo left and Yi Soo remember that note.
The note was the background check about his father, Han Young Man. He learned that his father retired from the police force in 1980.
 
Jo Family Mansion
Mrs.Park greeted Hae Woo at the door. She told her that she cover for her and said she worked late at the office. A few minutes later, her father,  Jo Ui Sun, wondered out loud why was she coming home so late.

Hae Woo quickly walked upstairs to her bedroom.  Her husband was in there. He acknowledge her and told her to take a shower. Then she tried to tell her where she was. He interrupted her and said, “How can you be so brutal? Don't you know how hard it is for me right now? I have been trying to pretend like nothing's happened to affect our relationship. I'm trying to get through this smoothly so we can put it behind us. Can't you at least do the same? I wish you'd do the same. (Joon Young, I feel your PAIN.)


Apartment Lobby Area
Director Kim (Yi Soo) received a call that Director Oh will be the head of Jo Sang Deuk new foundation. Yi Soo calls Detective Kim Soo Hyun and asked him to find out who was Choi Byung Ki partner on the police force.
 
Car Lot
Detective Kim looked at rental cars. He told the salesman that he thought Ho was supposed to be on rental cars. The salesman said it was up to them if they want to use Ho, Ha, or both.
 
DirectorKim’s Office

Dong Soo snooped around Director Kim (Yi Soo) office. He needs to find the bugging device before Secretary Jang gets into trouble. Secretary Jang walks in before he finds anything. She asked him what was he doing? Then suddenly, Dong Soo burst out and told her he knew she planted a bugging device in Director Kim’s office and he was very disappointed in her. With those words, he walked out the office. She giggled a little. She never knew how much Dong Soo like her and he was willing to protect her by getting rid of that bug.


DirectorJo Ui Sun’s Office

Director Kim Jun meets with Director Jo Ui Sun in his office. Director Kim tells him about his idea of starting a new hotel with the help of Gaya Hotel. Director Jo Ui Sun said it was a good idea, but he needs time to think about it. Director Kim Jun gets ready to leave, but before he leaves tells Director Jo Ui Sun about the rumor he heard that his father, Jo Sang Deuk, will leave all his assets to a foundation. Jo Ui Sun got nervous and said he had enough asset.  Director Kim Jun notice how nervous he got and teased him by telling him if he needs help with any asset, he will help him out.


Jo Sang Deuk’s private office
Jo Ui Sun confronts his father, Jo Sang Deuk, about giving all his assets away to a foundation. He argues with him to name him chairman, but Jo Sang Deuk refuses. Then Jo Ui Sun threatens his father and tell him he would tell everyone who he really is. The father calls his bluff and told him, “If you want to be labeled as the son of a criminal and Hae Woo as the granddaughter of a criminal then do it.”
 
Director Jo Ui Sun’sOffice
He storms out his father’s office and goes back to his office at the hotel. He paces back and forth. His assistant walks in. He asked his assistant to find out how much funds in he has in his overseas accounts.
 

Small Diner


Yi Soo meets with a man from his father’s past. He finds out that his father and Choi Byung Ki left the force in 1980 and perhaps “they were both transferred to Namhyeondong” . Yi Soo shooks his head and said that was impossible. He wouldn’t have gone to that place.
 
Director Oh Joon Young’s Office
Director Oh finds out the information about Chairman Jo’s foundation has been leaked.
 
Small town
Hae Woo finally visit her maternal grandmother’s resting place. She always thought she was dead (so did her father, Jo Ui Sun). Detective Kim accompanied her, but she never told him why she went there.
 
Chief Oh’s Hospital Room

 His son, Joon Young, grabs his jacket to leave. Chief Oh’s breathing gets louder and louder. His son notices the change in his breathing. Joon Young knew this was a sign that his father wanted to tell him something.


So he decided to ask him, Yes or No Question.  Joon Young asked him about Director Kim Jun. No Blink. Joon Young told him, he was really Han Yi Soo and then he asked if Han Yi Soo did that to him.  No Blink.

Joon Young look for something to write on. Then he started writing down last names. Joon Young raked his brain. He only blink for one last name and that was Jo.


 
Then he wrote down his father-in-law’s name, Jo Ui Sun. No Blink. Obviously this Jo was not part of his married family . Then he asked was the Jo unrelated to Hae Woo. No Blink. He hesitated when he thought about the person that could have down it. But he had to ask, “Is it Hae Woo's grandfather?” His dad blink. Joon Young said with disbelief, “Chairman Jo Sang Deuk did this to you?” BLINK!
 
Police Station
Detective Byeon and Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo talk on the phone. Detective Byeon did a thorough investigation on Han Young Man. He realized that Choi Byung Ki and Han Young Man had similar histories. Hae Woo asked was Han Young Man a torturer. Detective Byeon said it was a great possibility. Detective Kim Soo Hyun was in the car with Prosecutor Jo Hae Woo.
 

Professor Yoon’s apartment


Yi Soo finally catches up with Professor Yoon. He shows him the photo of his dad and Choi Byung Ki to the professor. He wanted to know which one was the torturer. Yi Soo pointed Choi Byung Ki with hopes that the professor would choose him. But the professor picked his dad, Han Young Man. Tear start to flood Yi Soo’s eyes when his father was signaled out. He slowly walked out the apartment building. He stumbles down the street. No tears drop. He refused to let them drop.


As he walks down the street he hears voices from the past, his father and Jo Sang Deuk.   He has finally revealed the truth, but the truth has turned his world upside down. He was bent on uncovering Jo Sang Deuk’s life that he unknowingly dig a hole for himself.  The words of his father and Jo Sang Deuk’s words brought him to his knees. “I feel so bad when I think of the pain you'll feel when you find out.” His father’s words. Jo Sang Deuk’s words “Your father's secret that you don't know...”




He runs to an abandoned area. In that place, he cried out loud. He was in so much pain. How could his father do such a thing? How could his own father be a torturer? He tortured Professor Kang Hee Soo, the father of Detective Kim Soo Hyun. He stood under that rotating red light for hours.

Outside the Police Station

ProsecutorJo received a called from Professor Yoon. He told her that Han Yi Soo knows that his father was one of his torturer. She rushes to Yi Soo’s place.


Yi Soo’s apartment
Yi Soo filled with anger. He opens his drawer and takes out another gun.The phone rings. It’s Hae Woo. He stares at the gun and then at the “Legend of Orpheus” painting. He walks up to the painting and said, “Don't look back. You have to end it... Han Yi Soo.” Then he walked out the door with his gun in his hand.
