RECAP: Gu Family Book ep 5

Episode 4 left us hanging in the middle of an assassination attempt on Lord Park. Choi Kang Chi and Yeo Wool were also set to fight against a group of illusions.

Episode 5 picks up with the evil Jo making a comment to himself that things must be starting as he begins playing a game with a gisaeng.

Choi Kang Chi and Yeo Wool start battling it out with the illusions that turn to smoke when cut down.



Inside his room Lord Park has realized that his visitor is not actually So Jung and finds a sword at his throat when he asks who he really is. The assassin resumes his own form and demands to know more of Choi Kang Chi's bracelet. He never gets an answer as he finds a sword at his own throat. The guards appear to the rescue.

Outside Kang Chi is growing frustrated fighting the illusions and Yeo Wool reveals only one is actually real. Choi Kang Chi sets out to figure which one it is as he starts getting cut by them.

The battle between the guards and the assassin has moved outside as they try to catch him.



Yeo Wool gets cut on the arm and is about to be more seriously injured when Kang Choi jumps in front of her and takes the blow through his arm. The move reminds Yeo Wool of when she was young and about to be attacked by a dog. The then young Kang Chi appears and rescues her as she cowers helplessly in fear. Kang Chi's move also helps him figure out who the real person is in the group of illusions. When he hits him the illusions disappear.

With the battle over Kang Chi clutches his arm and turns to Yeo Wool telling her not to worry that it's nothing. Yeo Wool remembers hearing him say that in the past after the dog bit his arm also. In the present she reacts differently than she did in the past.  Yeo Wool hits him on the head calling him a fool for blocking it instead of moving away. Kang Chi not happy with that reaction and says she should say thank you or I was saved because of you. Yeo Wool tells him she can take care of herself but he says no matter what she says he did save her. She hits him again and says she didn't ask him to do that and doesn't need him to protect her.



Yeo Wool walks away and remembers how as a young girl she was helpless and as a boy Kang Chi boasted he feared nothing. That is until he saw a spider and leaped around in fear. He even threatened to marry her if she ever told anyone about his fear of spiders.

Gon Yi finds Yeo Wool kicking and cursing a tree as she remembers Kang Chi’s marriage proposal and asks her what she is doing. She says she isn’t doing anything and starts to walk away when Gon Yi notices blood on her sleeve and he asks what happened. She tells him of assassination attempt and of fight before she finally admits that Kang Chi saved her live and it wasn’t the first time he had done so.

Chung Jo is worried when her servant tells her that Kang Chi was in a fight and fears how hurt he was.

Kang Chi is tended to as a group of servants watch. He is pretty vocal that it hurts and the servant Choi that Kang Chi calls Dad fusses at him for not calling for help. Kang Chi protests he had someone fighting with him but doesn’t know the person’s name when Gon Yi appears and says it was Master Dam. Kang Chi believes that Yeo Wool is a young man because of how she dresses.

Yeo Wool sent Gon Yi to deliver medicine to Kang Chi. While Kang Chi thinks it is a feminine thing to do he tells Gon Yi to that he is grateful to Master Dam for it.

Gon Yi returns to inform Yeo Wool that he gave medicine to Kang Chi but finds her without a shirt on tending to her wound. He is a bit flustered and when she asks what Kang Chi says he is a bit vague as he remembers how he reacted.



When Kang Chi said he was grateful that did not go over well with Gon Yi and he told him off. Gon Yi has never had a nice attitude to Kang Chi (a bit jealous). Kang Chi gets upset and tells him off as well. As Gon Yi walks away the servants have to hold Kang Chi back from hitting Gon Yi and he starts counting to three for Gon Yi to come back.



Gon Yi told none of this to Yeo Wool and he leaves her with the impression that Kang Chi didn’t say much or even admit he said he was grateful. Yeo Wool annoyed at Kang Chi over that.

The main guard gives Lord Park and Tae Seo a report on what occurred. They didn’t catch the assassin but he tells them that Kang Chi caught his attacker at least. Tae Seo argues they should torture the captured man to get information out of him as he is convinced it is Jo Gwan Woong’s doing. The head guard admits that the reason they knew of the attack was because a man came and warned him. It was So Jung that allowed them to save Lord Park. So Jung is outside staring at the moon. He worries that not much time is left for Kang Chi.



Kang Chi is sitting outside looking at the medicine given to him from Master Dam (Yeo Wool) when he sees Chung Jo approaching. He puts the medicine down and jumps up to talk to her. She came to see how his wound was. Chung Jo ad berates him for not seeing a doctor and his mad that he claims he is always fine. Kang Chi tells her she is the only medicine he needs. She hugs him. He hugs her back.

Yeo Wool is nearby and sees the embrace between the two. She does not look happy as she walks away. The couple continues hugging while the medicine is left forgotten on a bench.

Dam Pyung Joon is sent a message by bird that they are using illusions to attack Lord Park.

Jo Gwan Woong gets a visit from Tae Seo. Tae Seo says he knows of the assassin and tells Jo to go to inn to explain it himself. He says that his father told him to treat him with respect which is why he did not go to the police about assassin. Jo pretends to know nothing.

At the inn the servants are making preparations for the grooms wedding party to arrive at the inn. Food is prepared and Chung Jo’s maid takes her something to eat but she refuses it asking to be left alone. Chung Jo remembers the night before when as she embraced Kang Chi she wished things could stay like that. Chung Jo wondered if she could live without him and would rather be dust. He says he will do whatever she wants. Chung Jo asks if he could betray her family to be with her. Before he replies she says of course he couldn't do that and tells him to forget her questions as it is just wedding jitters.

Kang Chi sighs as he sits alone outside surrounded by the bustle of the wedding. So Jung appears as he sighs. Kang Chi does not know who he is. As they talk So Jung asks if it is 10 days until he has been there 20 years.



Kang Chi corrects him and says it is 11. This reminds So Jung of Wol Ryung who had the same amount of time left when everything went wrong. Kang Chi wonders if he knows Kang Chi. So Jung warns Kang Chi that he must leave before sunset that day and not return until sunrise. Kang Chi doesn't believe it but So Jung warns him to listen and walks past him. Kang Chi turns around and sees that So Jung has disappeared. He runs to find him.



Tae Seo arrives at the inn and asks the head guard why his father is calling him. He is told that he has a guest. Tae Seo notices Yeo Wool standing behind the guard and goes to greet her. He recognizes her and asks why she is there. Yeo Wool says she is there with her father.  Gon Yi isn’t introduced and he looks a little annoyed at the attention Tae Seo gives Yeo Wool.



Lord Park is discussing Jo Gwan Woong with Dam Pyung Joon before the navy admiral is introduced. He came to see Lord Park about getting funding to make ships to protect the country. Tae Seo is called into the room and told to make ready. He starts closing the windows.



Outside this is noticed by Yeo Wool and Gon Yi who are waiting outside Lord Park's room. Yeo Wool is wondering what is going on when Kang Chi passes by and notices them. He wants to know why they are there and Yeo Wool tells Gon Yi to tell Kang Chi that it is none of his business. Gon Yi and Kang Chi get into an argument again and the inns guard has to break it up.  To prove he means business in warning them not to make a commotion other guards surround the pair to prevent any fighting. They admit sulkily admit defeat.



Inside Lord Park’s room, the four men enter the hidden vault that is behind a painted panel. The room is packed with cases of silver. Lord Park promises that all the money in that vault will go to making the ships.

Meanwhile Jo has been keeping tabs on what is going on at the inn. He knows the navy admiral visited Lord Park. Jo has a plan ofhis own for Lord Park. He calls on the magistrate and reports that his man was kidnapped and that it was Lord Park that did it. He says that he sent the man to the inn to check up on rebel activity and he disappeared. This is his proof that Lord Park has committed treason.

Outside the inn a servant runs up to the main gate to announce that the grooms wedding party is almost there. Supervisor Choi goes in to tell the lady of the house as she gives instructions on final preparations for when the party gets there. She wonders where Lord Park is and sends Supervisor Choi and servants off to their tasks.

Lord Park is saying goodbye to the navy admiral and to Dam Pyung Joon when the governor turns to look at Kang Chi. Kang Chi is introduced and Lord Park mentions that Kang Chi could do well under the admiral’s wing but Kang Chi denies it and vows he will stay with the inn as that is his home. He asks the admiral to forget about him. Yeo Wool calls him an idiot to herself. A servant comes and informs Lord Park that the wedding party has arrived and all hear this. Kang Chi not that happy.



As Dam Pyung Joon and Yeo Wool walk away, he asks her what she thinks of Kang Chi. It sounds like he is fishing to see if she likes him. Gon Yi doesn’t like it when she says nice things and looks glad when she says she wouldn’t want to be his friend. She asks why her father wants to know and he just mentions he has some thoughts that have bothered him. As her father walks away with Gon Yi she wonders why she mentioned Kang Chi wasn’t so bad. Dam Pyung Joon tells Gon Yi to look into Kang Chi’s past.



While the magistrate gathers his men to visit the inn.  A group gathers to watch the wedding party arrive, Chung Jo sits in her room trying to block the sounds of the approaching group, the soldiers head out to the inn and Kang Chi watches as the wedding group arrives as well.

When the party enters the Parks front yard they are to place a wedding gift on a table that was prepared for it. The box breaks the table however and as everyone stares at it and Chung Jo hears the commotion from her room, the gates burst open as the magistrate and his soldiers arrive.



The soldiers are told to search everywhere for the kidnapped person and evidence of treason. Tae Seo protests them barging into the middle of the ceremony but the magistrate says he had a report of kidnapping and treason so had to check it out. The kidnapped man is found.

Supervisor Choi tells Kang Chi the police are there. He tells Kang Chi to check it out. Kang Chi is about to follow when he hears So Jung’s voice. He remembers So Jung’s warning to leave before sunset. He looks at the sky but at Supervisor Choi’s urging to come he ignores the warning and goes to see what is going on.

So Jung is waiting outside the inn and asks Kang Chi to leave but he remains unheard. The sun sets.

Soldiers go through Lord Park's room looking for treasonous material. They don’t find the hidden vault but they do find the letter that was sent to him by Dam Pyung Joon.

Outside Tae Seo protests the man is an assassin when Jo identifies him as the kidnapped man that works for him. The magistrate asks what that means and Jo asks Tae Seo if what he said is true then why it was not reported to the police. Tae Seo starts yelling but Lord Park tells him to quiet down and asks Jo what he is trying to do. Jo says get rid of rebels but Lord Park corrects his by saying he meant what was he doing working with men that could do illusions. Just then the soldier that found the letter addressed to Lord Park appears and gives it to the magistrate.



Jo grabs it and reads the message. Inside the name Bi Jo that is mentioned is what rebels call Jo Gwan Woong and the symbol on the envelope is used by rebels to show it is an important message. This is the proof they have found of treason and Jo tells the magistrate to arrest Lord Park as a traitor immediately. Lord Park tells his son and guard not to get involved as they begin to protest the arrest.

Chung Jo, her mother and her servants arrive and see that Lord Park has been arrested. Jo promises Lord Park he will make his daughter a government salve sell her as a gisaeng where he will take good care of her.

Kang Chi appears and challenges Jo Gwan Woong’s words. He walks up to the men holding Lord Park and throws them to the ground before untying him. He tells the men to go if they don’t want to die. Lord Park protests but Choi Kang Chi continues and says they should leave before he counts to three. The magistrate protests he should do that as it is a treason charge but Kang Chi scoffs at such an absurd charge. He asks what that makes Jo then who takes when his father gives. Jo gets mad and calls out to one of his men. The man tries to attack Kang Chi but he blocks it.



Kang Chi is about to be attacked again when Lord Park jumps in front of him and takes the sword strike through his stomach. Everyone looks at Lord Park in shock. Kang Chi punches the attacker and grabs Lord Park as he falls. Lord Park dies in Kang Chi’s arms after asking if he was hurt telling him he was like a son to him and asking he protect his two children.



Kang Chi cries out for him to come back. A whirlwind blows through the courtyard and Kang Chi looks up at Jo with glowing eyes as he vows to kill him.

Laugarza:
This episode finally sets the basis for what will happen in the rest of the drama. History is repeating itself as Lord Park is framed by Jo as a traitor and is told that he plans to make his daughter a gisaeng as well. Things will hopefully be different this time as Choi Kang Chi doesn’t yet know what he is and has a background with the Park family. Hopefully he won’t be betrayed as his father was by the one he loves. I am curious to see when Kang Chi finally realizes that Dam Yeo Wool is a woman. Tae Seo does so why doesn’t Kang Chi? The Gon Yi vs. Kang Chi battle is something I look forward to. The arguments they have over nothing besides seeing each other amuses me.

Goliath1357:
This was a really emotional episode and Lee Seung Gi was really good during the last few scenes. I am still not thrilled with Suzy’s performance and I am currently shipping Kang Chi and Chung Jo together-they actually have nice chemistry. I was really excited when Kang Chi’s inner gumiho surfaced, I have a feeling that we may see him transform earlier than expected. I like that the story is moving at a brisk pace and that there are a good number of action scenes.
