Both shows are about a brilliant mind - that isn't connected to the police - investigating crimes. However, whileas Kagi no Kakatta Heya dwells on locked room cases, Hard Nut! shows cases that were solved by the usage of mathematics. If you like the investigation genre, Kagi no Kakatta Heya is a sure pick for you anyway.

First off can I say, I'm surprised no one mentioned this one. There is Galileo 2 but I never watched b/c Utsumi wasn't the lead.

This is a perfect example. Nanba (Hard Nut) is a student at Tokyo University for Mathematics. Yukawa (Galileo) is an assistant physics professor at Tokyo University. You'll notice the same campus scenes.

Tomoda (Hard Nut) is a straitlaced police detective presented with cases that need a mathematical need---leading to predictions on the killer. While, Utsumi (Galileo) is a straitlaced police detective presented with cases that need a physics understanding in order to predict the killer.

One glaring difference. Nanba is far more excited by the crimes while Fukawa is snobbish & void of any excitement. Tomoda is a bit more concerned for justice while Utsumi is highly sensitive for each crime.

Slight flirtation is found in both shows---well in Hard Nut it's one sided; in Galileo, it's clearly reciprocated.

If you liked or loved Hard Nut then you'll love Galileo and vice versa. This versio is basically, as I said before, is the same story but with a younger pair in Hard Nut with an interesting approach. You'll love it.

The plot is very similar - the man and woman work together in order to solve murder cases, one is a genius with poor communication skills.

Both are episodic cases with one larger underlying case that's hinted throughout. Even though they are episodic, they aren't boring and don't drag. Plus, the characters' dynamics are kind of similar as well. Dele is more serious, better written, and the characters are more fleshed out but both are still extremely interesting and entertaining.

The math geniusness is amazing...not sure if the stuff is actual math though.

Both protagonists are female mathematicians who uses their knowledge to solve problems. Hard Nut is more of a detective, which is a little more intense, while Suugaku Joshi Gakuen is a school drama.

In both dramas, there is a girl who is an expert in one area, Math in Hard Nut and Weather in Otenki Onee-san, who help out detectives solve crimes using their area of expertise.
