Best Concept Ever
A quick review on Cherry Magic, and just to say that I loved this series with all my heart. It was one of the first series I've seen that wasn't involving students or a university. I'm usually bored with the office-type settings, but this was the best thing yet. Adachi and Yuichi played a wonderful couple, with the subtle humor and silliness of mind-reading abilities, they created one of the best Japanese BLs ever.
Let's Dive In.
Let's start with the concept of the show. One word: brilliant. At first, I was worried that I was going to get bored with this series, mainly due to the fact that I went in without reading the synopsis or anything. As soon as we get into the juicy parts of the plot, I'm invested. A thirty-year-old gets the ability to read people's minds when he touches them, and it's all due to him being a virgin? Please, I love it. There was just so much to play around with when it came to this concept, and the show does an amazing job at executing their options. I really liked being able to be in Yuichi's head and see what he was thinking. Most of the time is was super cute, and other times it made for a good laugh at Adachi's reactions. I also liked how he used it to help with the people around him with their health and their situations. We can also kind of see how him having these abilities are affecting him. This show did a good job at diving into all of the different aspects that would come to being able to read people minds. A beautiful job well done.
I loved Adachi and Yuichi. They had this perfect shyness towards one another, and I loved them with all of my heart. I liked that we didn't have to see a bunch of skinship to fall in love with their relationship. That's when you know that you have a genuine couple and great acting to make these characters who they are.
I wasn't a fan of Adachi's friend at all. While I was intrigued with his story starting off, I was completely done with it closer to the end. Masato had this very calming, very dull personality until he meet this delivery boy and slowly realizes he's catching feelings. What took me away from this character was how he overdramatically expressed his affection, or just his emotions in general. I felt like I was watching a entirely different series when we switched to him. I didn't like how Adachi and his story were pretty ordinary and natrual when it came to expressing emotions while Masato was over the top when emphasizing how he was feeling. I didn't care much for him, nor did I care much for Minato (even though he was adorable). They were nice, but they drew me out of the main story.
Overall, this was a very detailed, very well put together series. My favorite part was just the concept. We don't see many fantasy BL series, so this one was exciting. I hope we're able to see more series with this fantastical type of setting. A definte recommendation.
