Chinese Republican Dramas

Dramas set in 1912-1949 China, give or take a few years. This was the Republican Era when China was ruled by the Kuomintang, suffered under Japanese occupation, the second Sino-Japanese War (World War II), and after 1945, had civil war which the Communist party won. It was a time of great unrest, so many dramas here will be about action. However, romance is a key element that makes any story close to people's hearts so there will also be a lot of romance dramas. Typically, however, the dramas produced about the Republican era have a lot of flaws (not the least due to cutting and editing by broadcast stations because of Chinese censorship). Nevertheless, some dramas are rather good. Honorable mention is "Battle Of Changsha" which is usually rated as the best for its realistic portrayal of the effects of war on people's everyday lives, awesome directing, minimal cutting of the story, and superb mise-en-scene.
