Episode 3 - 5

While under cover, the leads have significant UST and flirt but are not yet in a proper relationship, yet they have to act out the roles of a king and concubine who get married.

When the leads first meet they are both running away and they use each other as props to hide from their pursuers; the ML uses the FL as a fake fiancee to get his father to call off his wedding; consequently the FL becomes the ML's fake assistant.

Fake engagement and marriage.

Contractual dating after negotiating with the ML's grandfather, who first tries to use a stipulation in his will to force the ML to marry the FL.

Marriage on paper so the FL can use the ML's nationality to aid a mission. They also use it to their advantage later on to escape danger.

Fake dating + a confidentiality contract, then a fake break up and real dating.

A study goes around saying that Wednesday at 3:30 PM is the point in the week when stress is at it's peak and people look the most drained. The FL's boyfriend dumps her, and she realizes he did it at 3:30 PM on a Wednesday. Her childhood friend returns from abroad, and due to events he moves in with her. Instead of paying rent, he pledges to help her win back her ex by taking her out for fun "courses" every Wednesday at 3:30 PM so she'll look happy and refreshed when everyone else around the ML will look their worst. The ML uploads a picture from each "course" to the FL's instagram, which leads her coworkers to speculate that she's dating. At one point when the ML delivers something to the office, they briefly pretend to be dating.

One-sided seduction bet = half-fake dating (the FL is not aware that the ML is tricking her).

Fake dating.

The ML already knows the FL likes him and rejected her, but also has a bit of a soft spot for her and doesn't publicly deny it when others mistake her for his girlfriend because he doesn't want to embarrass / publicly humiliate her, when they both end up at a meal with their two families where the elders try to set the ML up with the FL's cousin and the FL up with the ML's cousin. The ML's cousin avoids it by saying that he heard that the ML and FL are already dating. Due to the situation, the ML isn't able to deny it. He's forced to say that they are dating, and he and the FL agree to fake date for a while with the intent that they break up after a sufficient amount of time has passed.

The FL lets some people (e.g. her doctor, her yoga class) think the ML is her husband.

The ML takes the FL home as his pretend girlfriend for Lunar New Years.

Fake marriage. 

When the royal court tries to force the crown prince to consummate his marriage to end a drought, he instead decrees that any unmarried citizens over 20 must marry. He then barely survives an assassination attempt. The FL is the unmarried 28-year-old adopted daughter of the man who saves the ML's life. The ML conveniently wakes up with amnesia. In order to save herself from becoming the 5th wife / concubine of a horrible and much older man, the FL and her father turn to the ML to marry her instead.

Marriage of convenience. 

The ML feels a mix of gratitude, love, and guilt towards the FL. The FL mostly feels hatred towards the ML for his role in an accident and his betrayal of her trust. She marries him in order to use his wealth and status to become someone who can expose the truth behind her mother and sisters' deaths. They have no physical relationship.

Leads pretend to date to cover for the fact that he's living with her / protecting her to protect himself, but the lines are pretty blurred. He rips up her proposed contract and says he doesn't need it.

Fake dating

The marriage between the leads is bestowed by the Emperor at he Dowager Empress' suggestion. The FL does not object because she already has some feelings for the ML based on a childhood interaction, but her objective at that point is to "subdue" the ML. The ML is afraid of and basically disgusted by the FL. Eventually the FL gives the ML a divorce letter dated three years in the future to change his mindset. The ML believes that their marriage is just for show until the divorce date.

FL pretends to be in love with the ML to seduce him so he doesn't fall for the SFL and end up destroying the world.
