Live action dramas and movies based on comics and anime

Movies and dramas adapted from Asian comics (manga, manhwa, manhua) and anime.

All genres except GL and BL (since the genre isn't everyone's cup of tea, and besides; I have a ton of BL lists--including one listing all Asian BL based on comics and novels.)

Since I'm a complete comic-junkie, I do watch live action adaptations of all my favourites--but there are tons and tons and tons of them... Not all to my taste--but here they are. (There'll be many missing, these are only the ones I know of.) Note; In some cases--the comic version might be created AFTER a movie/drama. But I'll include those, as well.

I won't list sequels nor remakes from the same country--since there are sometimes tons of them, but will list versions from different countries.

All lists updated sporadically with new titles and comments/mini reviews.

  • 20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End
    7.5

Adapted from the excellent shounen/seinen manga "20th Century Boys" by Urasawa Naoki.

    Has sequels.

  • Absolute BL

    Also has another version.

  • As the Gods Will

    4. As the Gods Will

    Japanese Movie - 2014

    7.0

Adapted from shounen/seinen manga "Kamisama no Iutoori" by Fujimura Akeji and Kaneshiro Muneyuki.

The movie is... not exactly good, but for a fan of the manga, it's fairly decent.
(The manga is completely insane. I love it.)

  • Bakuman.

    5. Bakuman.

    Japanese Movie - 2015

Adapted from the shounen manga with the same name, by Obata Takeshi and Ohba Tsugumi. (The guys who made "Death Note".)

  • Barefoot Gen

    6. Barefoot Gen

    Japanese Movie - 1976

Based on the shounen manga with the same name, by Nakazawa Keiji.
    (Several different LAs exist.)

  • Battle Royale

    7. Battle Royale

    Japanese Movie - 2000

    8.0

Adapted from the seinen manga with the same name, by Taguchi Masayuki and Takami Koushun.

(One of my all time fav mangas. Gory!)

  • BLEACH

    8. BLEACH

    Japanese Movie - 2018

    7.0

Adaptation of Kubo Tite's shounen manga with the same name.

(My guilty pleasure... The only super-mainstream shounen series I've ever liked. I reluctantly confess that I'm a fan... lol...)

  • Boku dake ga Inai Machi

    9. Boku dake ga Inai Machi

    Japanese Drama - 2017, 12 episodes

    8.5

Drama adapted from Sanbe Kei's manga with the same name. ("Erased" in English.)

  • Boys Over Flowers

    10. Boys Over Flowers

    Korean Drama - 2009, 25 episodes

    8.0

Korean adaptation of Japanese hit shoujo manga "Hana Yori Dango" by Kamio Yoko.

  • Boys Over Flowers

    11. Boys Over Flowers

    Thai Drama - 2021, 16 episodes

Thai adaptation of the classic Japanese shoujo manga with the same name, by Kamio Yoko.

Has original Japanese versions (the best of them all) as well as Korean and Taiwanese versions.

Actually--all the three first versions are good, in their own way. Taiwan's "Meteor Garden" is often overshadowed by the much beloved Japanese original, as well as the super flashy Korean version--but give it a chance. It may be dated in looks, but it's actually just as good as the others. Better, in some ways.

  • Bunny Drop

    12. Bunny Drop

    Japanese Movie - 2011

    8.0

Adaptation of the josei manga by the same name (basically. "Usagi doroppu" = rabbit/bunny drop) by Unita Yumi.

  • Casa Dulce Casa

    13. Casa Dulce Casa

    Korean Drama - 2020, 10 episodes

    7.5

Based on the webtoon horror-manhwa by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan.

The manhwa is excellent--the drama is worth a watch and very cool in many ways--but the plot changes were so massive that it really put me off. Therefore not too good a rating from me...

  • City Hunter

    14. City Hunter

    Korean Drama - 2011, 20 episodes

    8.5

Korean adaptation (that can be discussed, since it's not very faithful to the original manga) of the Japanese manga by the same name, by Hoji Tsukasa.

  • Confessions

    15. Confessions

    Japanese Movie - 2010

    9.5

Live action version of the josei manga by the same name, by Kimura Marumi and Minato Kanae.

Also has a cinema version, but IMO the TV version is slightly better.
