BL Dramas (& Films) I've seen :)
**I've been getting into BL dramas & movies lately. Here's a list of all the one's I've seen so far - and I'll update it as I watch more**
LOL the rationale behind my ratings are purely based off of its entertainment factor to me personally & how engaged I get into the plot and the story and how creative they are. Looking forward to updating the list as I watch more haha.
Wow, this list is getting long...
-
1. Bad Buddy
Thai Drama - 2021, 12 episodes
"From two people who can't be friends, without realizing, they became two people who can't JUST be friends"...that is the story of Pat & Pran.
THE BEST SHOW TO EXIST. PERIOD.
OHM & NANON'S CHEMISTRY is just mindblowingly, utterly one of the best I've EVER seen. Kudos to the director for crushing every stereotype to ever exist and displaying important issues in the perfect manner! , Chemistry? impeccable. Stereotypes? Broken. Standards? Raised.
-
2. The Untamed
Chinese Drama - 2019, 50 episodes
Phenomenal.
The best I've seen in a while. From the characters, story, plot, cast to just about everything; it was extraordinary. Wei Ying and Lan Zhan will always be in my heart. The cast was absolutely perfect for the drama. I loved every single one of the characters - EVEN the antagonists. "The Untamed" stirred up so many emotions...and the side characters were just as entertaining as the main leads! I will never get over the way Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan stare at each other and the chemistry between them is so damn good. This drama is 10/10. Yes, this a bromance. Yes, it's (arguably) better than any mainstream BLs. *check out the novel if you haven't already. It's the original story of Wangxian and is stunningly written :) It's a BL ;)*
I would've died if the censorship actually allowed Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan to kiss in the drama.^
-
3. Interpret My Love With Your Heart
Thai Drama - 2020, 5 episodes
This one is absolutely phenomenal :)))
I loved the cinematography, the theme, the acting, the plotline; to just about everything.
And this.is.what. you call a good quality SHOW and story. Whether it be a BL or not, the acting was literally amazing, and it had such a nice storyline with relevant morales! If you haven't already, I also recommend checking out the behind the scenes - because my gosh, they put so much effort to correctly execute every scene!
It wasn't just an act & re-take, but rather it was all about putting all of those emotions forward, and the two lead actors (Bilkin and PP) are strong hard-workers, and it was evident that every scene was acted out with great thought, emotions and hard work! Even the underwater kiss scene took so many takes, and it was baffling to see how hard it was to shoot. I really want to go to Phuket after seeing this show.
I'm greatly anticipating the sequel :)
-
4. HIStory3: Trapped
Taiwanese Special - 2019, 20 episodes
DAMN. This drama exceeded my expectations by a tenfold. It was so much more than BL, and the plot kept me so engaged! The chemistry was off the charts and I think I have to proudly say that this is the first BL where I was equally engaged in both of the couples. What I especially love about this series is that the story isn't lagging and everything's so perfectly executed (there was no awkward dialogues or any lacking scenes). "The acting was phenomenal, and everything to the backstory, plot line and cuteness was outstanding. (this is my favorite from this history series uwu).
-
5. Like in the Movies
Filipino Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
THIS WAS SO GOOD.
Everything from the humour, storyline, plot, characters, emotions and it was just so realisticlly depicted and the acting was one.of.the.best. AND CHESMITRY? OFF THE CHARTS.
(And oh my gosh, Tay Tawan & New Thitipoom's names were in the credits; I'm overjoyed! Vald looks a little like Tay ^-^)
-
6. HIStory2: Boundary Crossing
Taiwanese Special - 2018, 8 episodes
This was my first BL so it is very special :)
This was so cute! That's all I really have to say about it. The acting and chemistry between the main & side couples was A-1. I love how the drama is centered around volleyball & if you like Haikyuu, you'll love this one!
-
7. His
Japanese Movie - 2020
This is the type of movie that you put off for a while but once you get to it, its brimming with an excellent storyline, characters and emotions. I loved how the entire story revolved around the custody of the little girl; she was so adorable oh my gosh. I absolutely loved how they didn't make the mother the "bad guy" or the antagonist. It was so nice to see a female side role who's only purpose wasn't just to be the cause of disruption between the two male leads. In fact, the movie not only touched upon the issue of only the difficulties of coming out as gay, and raising child with a male partner - in fact, it also illustrated the importance the mechanisms of a relationship. Not only a romantic one, but also a paternal, maternal and platonic one. The scene that touched me the most was when Nagisa gave up Sora to his ex-wife. As viewers, the only side of the story that we saw was between Nagisa and Shun, but sometimes we forget that she's also her mother :)
Back to Nagisa and Shun's relationship... I loved how they maintained that type of innocence and rawness in their love. When Shun stepped up and came out as gay to their community members, I couldn't have been more proud of him. I'm so happy that this isn't one of those "I'm not gay, but I like you" tropes. And a round of applause for how accepting the community members were <3
Overall (I know I'm missing a lot of characters), it was such an excellent movie. I actually just found out that this is a sequel to a 5-episode drama. Time to check that one out!
-
8. 30Sai made Doteida to Mahotsukai ni Narerurashi
Japanese Drama - 2020, 12 episodes
SO CUTE & ADORABLE. The concept is so nice & original too ^-^ YES. Please keep raising the standard for BLs. This was literally the epitome of fluff, cuteness and a healthy relationship.
-
9. Where Your Eyes Linger
Korean Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
"Where Your Eyes Linger" was not what I expected.
Considering that this is a BL Drama from Korea...It was spectacular! Their chemistry was overflowing and it had the right amount of sweet & angst. It was perfectly balanced. The only thing that caught me off guard was the three year time skip - but it still ended very nicely. I love it! The OST was freaking amazing. The intro "Baby you~~" is stuck in my head ahh~
Edit: Okay, so I watched it again and I freaking love it T-T The tension between them is extravagant and their chemistry is literally the best!!!
-
10. To My Star
Korean Drama - 2021, 9 episodes
I FREAKING LOVE THIS <3 This. is. what. I. Mean. By. Acting. Their acting and chemistry carried this whole show!!! I loved itt. Their chemistry is OFF the charts; it's so so so natural. This has raised the standard of BLs by a ton. The premise and storyline were nice too.
(I was a little confused about what was going on with some of the side characters, but I think that'll get cleaned up in the move compilation.)
-
11. Addicted Heroin
Chinese Drama - 2016, 15 episodes
The acting is phenomenal. The actors are SO natural and their chemistry is amazing! The storyy is simple but that's what makes it so good. "Addicted" will make you addicted to the series.
I'm a little upset that because of censorship, they didn't get to make a second season, but this drama is definitely worth checking out.
-
12. Life Senjou no Bokura
Japanese Drama - 2020, 4 episodes
This is an underrated masterpiece.
It's a love story that blooms from two imaginative boys (see my review for all details). Overall, it's phenomenal!
-
13. Old Fashion Cupcake
Japanese Drama - 2022, 5 episodes
This was so freaking good. I surprisingly loved the maturity level within a setting which doesn't deal with highschoolers or young/puppy romance (coming from a person who is a sucker for fluff). The acting was beyond my imagination, a very interesting takeaway and the chemistry between them is just <333 and ofc both actors are so attractive, seriously.
-
14. We Best Love: Forever the First
Taiwanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes
Really nice~ Even though it's a simple storyline, it was executed really nicely <3 Definitely one of my favourite enemy to lover shows out there!!
-
15. Mr. Heart
Korean Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
Oh my gosh I loved this. I've said this time and again, but I'm a sucker for fluff. Fluff is the most cutest thing invented by mankind and this was brimming with fluff, dorkiness and adorableness. The actual plot was just so adorable and Sanghwa was ejkskjiefieieh SO CUTEEEEE. Their chemistry was so adorable too <3
The only thing that I was a little confused about were the loan sharks...but in the end, I ended up liking them too when they were cheering on for our boy. But then again, I won't completely forgive them for making him cry. But overall it was just soooo fricking cute. I think I might try marathon running now hahah
-
16. HIStory2: Right or Wrong
Taiwanese Special - 2018, 8 episodes
I loved the story! It was so wholesome and the chemistry between the characters was amazing. It was refreshing to see a different plot, and show that age doesn't matter when it comes to love.
the little girl was so cute :3
-
17. Kiss Me Again: Pete-Kao
Thai Special - 2018, 3 episodes
The rating is purely based off of the PeteKao cuts. My favorite ship :3
Pete & Kao start off with a 'hate' relationship with one another, which slowly evolves into love. They go through a lot of phases together - from friendship, Pete's jealousy, Kao's reluctance, and then Pete having to prove to Kao that he's worthy enough to be his boyfriend. I love how realistic the story is, I love their friends & their friendgroup - and I love their chemistry!
-
18. SOTUS S
Thai Drama - 2017, 13 episodes
As a lot of sequels go, I was a little cautious going into season 2. But man, Sotus never disappoints. I was in awe the entire season, and once again, it dealt with a lot of realistic issues in our society today. Arthit getting used to his new job, and the problems that come along with being in a secretive relationship.
Unpopular opinion: I liked Sotus S (the second season) a little better than Sotus. It reminded me why I was in love with the characters, acting and story so much.
Krist and Singto are amazing actors and deserve all the recognition they have :)
-
19. SOTUS
Thai Drama - 2016, 15 episodes
I was genuinely surprised by how much symbolism went into everything! From the gear, to the wrist tying ceremony, to the SOTUS system - this drama is a lot more than just BL. It taught not only the engineering students, but refined my view on senior-junior relationships. And of course, Kongpob and Arthit are an extraordinary couple :3
-
20. Dark Blue Kiss
Thai Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
This series is what I call a hidden gem. I'm very biased toward my favorite ship PeteKao & TayNew, hence Dark Blue Kiss is also very high in the list. The chemistry between the couples is beyond amazing and the story is bound to keep you hooked ;) (and the DBK intro is one of the best!)
-
21. You Make Me Dance
Korean Drama - 2021, 8 episodes
This was so cute and nice! I loved the characters and the plot was pretty interesting. I really wish they could make longer episodes!!!
-
22. Color Rush
Korean Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
I actually loved this a lot~ The whole premise and logistics of the world was so interesting :0 The actors had pretty solid chemistry with each other too. The only critique I had was that it was too short in length to really take-away much from the story. I'm looking forward to season 2!! Hopefully with more episode air-time.
-
23. Still 2gether
Thai Special - 2020, 5 episodes
Oh my gosh I have no words. I just finished watching “Still 2gether” and I’m still not over the closure. First off, I can’t believe the continuation of the first BL show I saw during quarantine has come to an end. All 5 episodes were SO ADORABLE and I think I may had died a little on the inside as each episode progressed to the finale. The last episode - the beach scene - it was so perfect and there were so many nostalgic “2geather” moments in Still 2gether, and I cried internally every time I would catch a reference. My baby bois Bright & Win have improved their acting soooo much and Sarawat & Tine’s chemistry is over the roof! All of the supporting cast from Green, Dim, Phoukong, Mil, Fong, Ohm, Boss, Pear; everyone excelled!! The ending scene. The “I’ll kiss you till you drop”-which changed to-“I’ll kiss you till you moan” just left me speechless and yearning for more of their screen-time! ...I think I’m just not ready for this to end. I need a season two!!
-
24. 2gether
Thai Drama - 2020, 13 episodes
2gether probably goes somewhere on the top of my list. There's one episode left, and I'm really going to miss my bois Sarawat and Tine T_T. The acting and storyline is top-notch and I definitely recommend it to any newbies entering the genre :)
**edit: after the finale episode of 2gether, I'm still very much in love with this series. The last episode gave me so much nostalgia, and I genuinely loved this series with all my heart. Definitely recommend it :)**
( Edit again: While the story of 2gether is simplistic, there's something about it that draws me back to the series. Still 2gether is coming out in 3 days and I'm more than excited. The MV (OST) released today - and I'm so looking forwards to this highly anticipated special/sequel)
-
25. Your Name Engraved Herein
Taiwanese Movie - 2020
The acting was so so so so good! It didn't even seem like I was watching a film most of the time because of how REAL they were. Their chemistry is off the charts. The premise of their story is really well written, though I wish the length of the film was a little longer...I would've loved to see more of their friendship and how they fell in love with one another. Though I feel like the ending was a little rushed, the whole film was really well executed and written and it makes up for it :) & it's so cool that they shot the ending here in Canada ayy!
[I didn't even realize Chang Jia Han [Edward Chen] was the same cast member who was in Red Balloon; wow he's a phenomenal actor :0
-
26. The Lover
Korean Drama - 2015, 12 episodes
I purely just saw the BL cut on Youtube...hence my review isn't a representative rating for the entire show. But based off of the clips I saw, it was so hilarious, cute and entertaining! The story between Takuya and Jun Jae is fairly simple & it reminds me of "Boy Next Door" with the comedic tropes which were placed in. After Jun Jae begins developing feelings for Takuya - is when the plot begins to get more interesting, and in fact a pretty accurate representation of closested LGBTQ couples in Korea at the time. It was both realstic and very cute! (the learning Japanese clip is so iconic omg *cough cough*) It was so adorable, and the main actors are actually so cute^-^
-
27. The Boy Next Door
Korean Drama - 2017, 15 episodes
Based on the technical definition of a BL, "The Boy Next Door" isn't really one; not really. But it definitely shouldn't put you off from watching it! Every minute of this was so entertaining, and I found it hilarious that they were both put into such awkward situations in the most coincidental times; talk about timing. Overall, it was such a comedic show and I loved watching their "bromance" develop as they were compelled to live together XD
-
28. Our Skyy
Thai Drama - 2018, 5 episodes
This was so cute! I've only seen 2 out of the 5 episodes...TayNew & KristSingto, but they were both so good in their own way.
The TayNew episode was like a side-story of Pete and Kao and it was so adorable - I was squealing the whole time >< the KristSingto one felt like a continuation of Sotus and Sotus S which I loved - it gave me so many nostalgic moments and a desire to watch Sotus again.
-
29. Semantic Error
Korean Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
This was actually really good?!??! The acting potential in these two is AMAZING. And don't get me started on the chemistry. I'm definitely going to stan DONGKIZ now (their comeback is approaching)
-
30. The Love of Siam
Thai Movie - 2007
I'll admit, this isn't a drama, but this movie was one of the first LGBTQ movies in Thailand, and gave recognition to the community :D This is a story of two boys tumbling into feelings for each other, which they didn't know they had or was even allowed. It's also a story of a heartbroken family & how they help an emotionally scarred father recover from the death of his daughter. This movie was very emotional and is full of complex characters & a bunch of feelings. Beware, you may cry at the end like I did.
-
31. Together with Me
Thai Drama - 2017, 13 episodes
MaxTul have such amazing chemistry; holy crap! (*note: it's been a while since I last saw this series, hence my opinion may differ*). Overall, it was great!
-
32. Utsukushii Kare
Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes
This was a very interesting journey. Throughout the show, it was quite evident that the attraction felt between Hira and Kiyoi was infatuation - or a give and take relationship where they could both satisfy each others wants; Hira wanting to worship Kiyoi (in a "goldlike" persona, while Kiyoi wanting that obsessive admiration (not unlike a stalker). In the end, both adolescents were flawed in their own ways.
First - Hira. Personally, I think Hira's social anxiety played a part in the way he viewed himself in this relationship. As someone who was never given even the slightest importance or self-worth, he never thought of himself as an equal or someone who is worthy enough to have feelings for a person like Kiyoi who was a "god" to him, less reciprocate them. These obsessive feelings led to extremes as we see in Hira's mind, when he wishes to shoot down anyone who thinks negatively of Kiyoi; his religion. To me, he was gravely flawed in the way he viewed Kiyoi which stemmed from his lack of self-worth, childhood, and diagnosed disorder.
Second - Kioyi. He was an interesting character to study. From what we know, Kiyoi's feelings for Hira come from the way he admires him. His feelings seemed more genuine to me - especially in the last episode when he said that he didn't want himself to be seen as a god, but a human being who is at equal footing as Hira; the one whom he wants a relationship with. Although I was a little skeptical of the way Kioyi was treating Hira throughout the series, almost toying with his feelings, like calling him "disgusting" or "gross" for his admiration, I think his greatest flaw was lack of communication, which is ironic considering that Hira also suffers from a similar flaw on his point of view.
Mainly because I’m over the word count, I’m going to stop the review here LOL but in general, I thought the show was most definitely very interesting.
-
33. My Engineer
Thai Drama - 2020, 14 episodes
Exceeded my expectations BY FAR. My Engineer is a contrast to all mainstream BLs and that's what I absolutely adore about it. It was a cute, sweet, hilarious show where I fell in love with all the characters. CAN I JUST APPRECIATE THE EQUAL SCREENTIME BETWEEN THE COUPLES. The story wasn't rushed and every single couple got their own arc ? (Frong & Thara will get their time in Season 2). BohnDuen & MekBoss are so cute and RAMKING IS OTP ❤
-
34. Love by Chance
Thai Drama - 2018, 14 episodes
(I'm going to have to rewatch this one. This is also a drama I saw a while ago but I remember loving everything about it.)
*I re-watched some clips of Love By Chance recently, and I recollected a lot of the drama that I had forgotten. As much as I love AePete, I love TinCan too! (Seriously though, I can't wait for Love By Chance 2)
-
35. Theory of Love
Thai Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
As each episode went by, I was surprisingly very engaged in the plot.
The first half is very frustrating because of Khai (Off is a good actor lol), and Gun's crying scenes are A-1. I was very interested in both of the other couples too and it was overall very nicely executed! I loved the film references throughout the movie, and it was very refreshing to see such a different and realistic view on unrequited love.
(it's refreshing to see a BL which isn't engineering)
-
36. Ossan's Love
Japanese Drama - 2018, 7 episodes
This was actually so hilarious and entertaining. I wanted to squish Maki's cheeks he was so adorable. Although the Chief was a little older than your typical love rival, this show really showed that love isn't about gender or age. The humor made everything better and it was simple and cute :P
-
37. Red Balloon
Taiwanese Drama - 2017, 8 episodes
This was short, but so so sweet! I loved the characters (both young and old), and the soundtrack was outstanding. I would probably re-watch it again :3
-
38. Love Sick
Thai Drama - 2014, 12 episodes
Frankly speaking, I almost gave up on this because of the first episode lol. I recommend new viewers to skip to the second episode for a better understanding of the story.
Love Sick is the mother of all BL dramas, so ofcourse I had to watch it :D. PhunNoh was such a cute couple, but because the cast was so young - their acting could've used a little polishing. A lot of the side characters were very frustrating, and the plot was a little scattered at places. Overall, it was really good :)
-
39. Love Sick 2
Thai Drama - 2015, 36 episodes
I liked this season a lot better than season one (yes, despite the lack of kisses). The acting had improved a lot more, and there was more focus on the main couple. The first half of season 2 was a little frustrating (and was a little stretched), but all of the couples made up for the wait!
-
40. Ossan’s Love: LOVE or DEAD
Japanese Movie - 2019
This was a refreshing continuation of Ossan's love.
I love how both the drama series and the movie are overall light-hearted and enjoyable. Maki and Harutan are so cute ><.
-
41. As If You Whisper
Korean Movie - 2019
This was a masterpiece Korean short film! Their relationship was so transparent, and I loved the plot - amazing. From the story, singing to the acting; it was so great.
These short films deserve so much more recognition!
-
42. His - I Didn't Think I Would Fall In Love
Japanese Drama - 2019, 5 episodes
This was actually a very nice & coming of age story.
I guess this changes my perspective on the sequel movie "His" which I happened to accidentally see before seeing these few episodes.
It was very nice, but I had a few complaints...*sigh* again with the female character tropes created for the purpose of interfering between the two main male leads; I really wished they changed that. And the chemistry was a little lacking, but they're teenagers and kids after all :))
The scenery was very nice, and I loved the surfing.
The ending left me a little puzzled.
-
43. 2 Moons 2
Thai Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
After being a little disappointed with the hype around 2 Moons (which I think is mediocre until the last few episodes), I thought the remake - 2 Moons 2 - would be similar in execution. But boiii was I wrong! The first four episodes are a quick recap - and I was already beginning to realize that the actors were much better at portraying their roles than a lot of the 2 Moons actors! (Phana and Fourth were both such an improvement!) I honestly loved all the couples, and they were all so perfect for their respective characters! I loved Phana x Wayo [Ben is such a natural actor], and Beam Fourth were just *chefs kiss* and MingKit were soo adorable! Ming's confession scene was so heartfelt and it felt so real! [JoongNine for the win <3]
-
44. The Moment
Thai Drama - 2020, 4 episodes
I accidentally stumbled across this on my YT recommendations but it was so short and sweet!! I loved it :)
-
45. HIStory: Obsessed
Taiwanese Special - 2017, 4 episodes
The chemistry between the two actors is just *chefs kiss*
The idea behind their storyline was a very interesting concept. I loved the whole idea of "time travelling" and the notion of a parallel universe (similar to reincarnation). While their relationship could have been arguably toxic...that was meant to be the conception behind the story - Shao Yi Chen's reluctance to allow himself to find love again & Jiang Jin Teng's possessiveness, almost an obsession. This was a very sensual drama, and their passionate scenes perfectly conveyed the conceptualization of the story.
-
46. My Pistachio
Korean Movie - 2018
Cute, Short film :3
I like pistachios even more now
-
47. Absolute BL
Japanese Special - 2021, 1 episode
This was actually pretty cute and funny LOL :>
-
48. YYY
Thai Drama - 2020, 6 episodes
This was a hilarious ride from start to finish; it was so nonsensical. YYY made fun of so many common BL tropes, and even though it was a sitcom, it dealt with serious issues in a comedic way. Some scenes in YYY got me questioning a lot of things, but it's a fun, short rollercoaster. What makes this even more entertaining is all of the side characters in the apartment complex, and of course the main couple; Nott and Pun.
*looking forward to season 2!*
-
49. TharnType
Thai Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
if you're looking for a mature & spicy romance... Tharntype is just for you. I swear this drama invented hate-to-love romances, and if you're a sucker for those, you're in luck... Undeniably, their chemistry is amazing; they're so natural with one another.
Techno would probably be my favorite character - and to be honest, I wanted to see more of the romance between the Korean guy (with the half blond & black hair) and the other roommate - they look so interesting. I'm so happy with the antagonist (Lhong)'s acting; I was mind blown. And of course, Mew & Gulf's chemistry was great.
What I disliked greatly about this show was the normalization of sexual abuse. This show definitely needed improving a lot in that context.
-
50. 2 Moons
Thai Drama - 2017, 12 episodes
At first, although the story piqued my interest, I wasn't fond of the acting...there were a lot of awkward pauses between the dialogues and sometimes I couldn't bring myself to empathize/feel the emotions the character's wanted to depict. There were a lot of sweet and fluffy moments that made me go uwu though^^ I watched up to episode 8 (I believe) and decided to take a break. I returned a month later and I finished off the remaining episodes! I could tell that the acting was improving in the last few episodes (especially God, the actor who plays Phana). My ultimate bias ship was MingKit for sure - and I was rooting for FourthBeam, but we didn't see a lot of their moments this season. Overall, it's a good mediocre BL in my opinion :)
-
51. ReminderS
Thai Drama - 2019, 3 episodes
This was like a parallel universe of LBC. It was sweet & the PhunNoh moments gave me so much nostalgia <3
-
52. HIStory: Stay Away From Me
Taiwanese Special - 2017, 4 episodes
It was short and cute.
-
53. Seven Days: Monday - Thursday
Japanese Movie - 2015
As a fan of the manga...this was a very cute adaptation :)
[A downside is the awkwardness between the actors at times, otherwise it was great]
-
54. Like Love
Chinese Drama - 2014, 15 episodes
Honestly, I didn't know whether this was meant to be taken seriously at first. It's actually pretty good overall, but there were a lot of loopholes in the plot... All in all, it was nice~
-
55. Make It Right
Thai Drama - 2016, 12 episodes
This was cute, but it was a bit of a cliche with a simplistic plot. Worth checking out though, especially for BookFrame's chemistry! I love Ohm Pawat's acting...I think I'm a fan :)
