Absolute Perfection (Or, as close as you can get)

Basically, the dramas, short films, and movies that I view as perfect (or, close to perfect). What are my other requirements to make it onto this coveted list? Whatever I want them to be! Which basically translates to, my reasons vary wildly. My only real rule for myself is that I have to have rated it at least a 9/10 for it to qualify to be on this list.

This ranking is not always accurate as I sometimes struggle to place dramas/movies when they are almost equally fantastic but different in regards to genre/tone. I do my best!

May or may not contain spoilers. You have been warned!

    1. Seven Days: Monday - Thursday

    Japanese Movie - 2015

    10

Masterpiece! What else can I say? I'd rate it 11/10 stars if I could.

Just read my review on it, and you'll understand why it deserves to be on this list.

To make room on my list so I can showcase another drama/movie when this list first pops up (before clicking on it), I have removed the sequel to Seven Days: Monday-Thursday, Seven Days: Friday-Sunday, also I consider them to be one movie so really this just makes sense. Not because I don't think it's perfection! Because I do! Just to be clear! Just to be able to spread some light on another work of Absolute Perfection.

Changed my mind. I loved/love this drama too much to rate it anything less than a 10. The acting is fantastic, and the comedy almost always lands. I also can't remember just how many times I've rewatched it I've seen it so many times.

    3. From Me to You

    Japanese Movie - 2010

    10

    10/10.

I saw this some years ago. But, I didn't want to mark it as completed because I couldn't remember if I saw all of it or not. So glad I decided to rewatch it! It still holds up to the image I had of it in my mind. In fact, it turned out to be even better than I remembered.

I'm very proud this was one of the first Japanese movies I saw. I love how this movie is not solely about romance. It actually takes a backseat for a majority of the movie and focuses on friendship, the background of it's characters, peer pressure, and self-confidence issues.

I think one thing this movie is underappreciated for is how all of it's conflicts make sense. You can understand why and how things would happen with a character/characters because of the type of person/people they are.

I feel no hesitance when I say that this is a perfect movie. Don't let the over two hour runtime intimidate you. Every minute is well spent.

My words were far too many to be contained by any character limit, so I'll just put the link to my review if you want to check it out to see my full thoughts on this drama.

Everything about this drama was a masterpiece and a masterclass example of not just Thai dramas but all dramas. I will hope for but can likely never expect to experience something like this again.

Watching I Feel You Linger in the Air feels like experiencing something sorrowful only to have your lover tuck your hair behind your ear, ask you what's wrong, and gently caress your cheek as they attentively listen to you. You feel seen, safe, and come to accept life's struggles.

    Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes

The first episode did a great job of setting the tone of this drama. It is something new, is SO fun and heartfelt, brings up meaningful and important topics, and on top of that it is really charming and makes you excited to see what happens in the next episode.

They do a great job of not just showcasing authenticity but also starting conversations and showing both attitudes people may have.

Of course, one of the best things is just how healthy Meguru-Kun and Wako-Chan's relationship is. They are just one of the healthiest couples if not THE healthiest couple I have ever seen.

What is also incredibly refreshing is how there is no love triangle or rival competing for the ML or the FL. The sole focus is not them getting together, but rather the challenges they face united together once they are in a relationship that just have to do with every day/personal/work problems.

Each episode I kept expecting there will be some unnecessary conflict between Wako-Chan and Meguru-Kun, but it never happened. I loved that! And the conflicts and issues we did see were resolved through communication, trust, and understanding.

Kira is just Kira. He is THE Kira. He is an absolute riot and the epitome of an oddball manga or anime male protagonist come to life, or a villain. Lol. He also has a lot of heart but just can't always figure out how to express his feelings properly. I adored him being paired with Asahi. They went great together and balanced each other out. Asahi needed some more unpredictability and fun in her life. Kira needed some stability.

This drama was a spectacular ray of sunshine for my mornings, as well as evenings. I will miss having a new episode to watch. I have no doubt I will be coming back to rewatch this over and over again.

    For now...

This was an epic cinematic blast of a drama. I'm going to recommend this to everyone I know, whether they watch Asian dramas or not! If they like action, I'm forcing their ass down on the couch next to me and prying their eyelids open with my fingers. So what if it has subtitles? You will fucking love it!

I loved how realistic they took this. They didn't make her unbelievably badass, completely cold, or even fully determined right away. She quickly wants to get revenge but doesn't process exactly what that means. And she's also scared. But bit by bit, in just the first episode, she builds some courage.

In particular, I found the training and fight scenes well done as Yoon Ji Woo is shown to have weaknesses in that she is not as large or muscular as the other men, but she has grit, a bit of talent, and she's not afraid to hurt others and understands what it will cost her.

This was one of the best strong female leads I've seen.

I highly highly recommend watching this if you haven't already.

How I wish I could watch this on a massive theater screen *sigh*

    Putting it here for now.

Everything about this was well-thought-out. From the clothing, lighting, props, and music to the dialogue, line delivery, and message.

It doesn't paint its protagonists as always right. More often than not, their points of view are challenged, often by each other. And, there is no easy answer. Peacefully protesting is a great way to speak out but does not guarantee a solution. Many companies are happy to wait it out until the public forgets about it. Acting illegally but nonviolently to expose deep-seated corruption is another way. But you can be arrested and/or have the public turn against you. For many, the end does not justify the means. And, if the law can be so easily disregarded, what is the point of it? Removing one person in power doesn't necessarily make the root of the issue go away; someone else will take their place.

None of it is easy. Even though this drama ended, it wasn't the end for the characters. They won the battle, but they're still fighting the war.

Our protagonists, while working together, aren't even on an equal playing field with each other. I think this is best shown through White's internal dialogue about growing up privileged and ahead of others and how unfair that is reflected by what he sees around him and what others say.

This wasn't a cash-grab romance drama with "brownie-points" material thrown in. This was a genuine attempt to portray working-class people being taken advantage of, discriminated against, and still fighting for equal rights.

Fantastic. The way it was shot, the colors, the symbolism and call-backs to previous minor details, the acting, and the dialogue were all perfect.

It really makes you FEEL. And the amazing thing is they don't even have to do much to make you hold your breath through an entire scene or simply become utterly mesmerized as you stare at your screen.

The way they play with the things that are unsaid... is magical. One of my favorite things is to have to read between the lines when I watch something. I like dramas and/or movies where just a few words can hold the utmost importance.

I get the hype now. I really do.

The biggest thing here was the tension. My God, the TENSION!

If I had to pick two words to summarize this, they would be artistic and tense.

I sat quietly with this drama. And then I sat some more. And even when days had passed since I last saw it, I sat with it, and it with me. I held something different in my chest when I walked. Before I went to speak, I paused.

    How to describe this? It's like . . . It's like . . .

It's like watching the dull, mundane every days pass you by. Except, they don't pass you by. They linger.

I can't say it liberated me. I think it left a small piece of something behind that I picked up and put in my pocket to carry with me.

Never have I felt so awed and intimidated by a drama that I was struck with the intense desire to impress it—or, at least, satisfy it—by giving it my full and undivided attention.

In every way, I found this to be on par with the first season, and my thoughts are really the same.

Stranger is a series that does not demand respect; it already has your respect. What it demands is your attention.

I couldn't guess what might come around the next corner or what small piece of information might be key. All I could do was be patient and follow Si Mok and Yeo Jin as they worked to uncover the truth and rise above the urgings of superiors to "let it go" or opportunities to take the easy path.

One may fairly criticize using connections to more easily achieve an outcome that is beneficial for you. Yet when it would only take one quick phone call, how many would turn it down? Corruption and collusion are not always easily recognized or avoided. "What, you wouldn't help a friend out? I did you a favor before, remember?"

I would ask for a third season, but only on the condition that it maintains the high standard the first two have set. If not, I don't want it.

I hold Stranger in the utmost reverence.

Side Note: Speaking of Si Mok and Yeo Jin, can we talk about their mutual respect and unspoken understanding of each other? I loved how, even when they were put in the position of being on opposing sides, they still worked together. And the small moments that illustrated their close bond, such as Yeo Jin ordering extra cabbage since she knows Si Mok likes it and Si Mok asking about/listening to her future plans (to many, this would be polite, but for Si Mok, as this is an effort for him, it reveals his care for someone).

This series really held my attention. I could barely stand the wait as each new episode came out. It has a really intriguing premise, makes fans of the genre question themselves, and has a couple with insanely palpable chemistry.

I gave it a 9.5/10 to start with. I know, that's very high. I'm happy to say that the quality didn't decline after the first couple of episodes. It stayed consistent or improved.

I think it's great to see a drama commenting on the negative tropes and aspects in the BL industry.

I haven't seen a drama like this before (in fact the only example I can think of is Call It What You Want, and that started airing after this).

Every time I assumed it was going to follow the typical format or include something problematic, it flipped my expectations completely and left me feeling guilty for having had so little faith in it.

They really threw those tropes and stereotypes out the window every episode!

    10/10.

To me, this drama will go down in my history books as a legendary drama. I don't know if I'll ever get to see something like this again.

The only problem is that I'm now going to be expecting more from my BL dramas after this one. Which, really shouldn't be a problem because writers should do better, but will probably hinder my watching of some dramas. But, that just goes to show how high quality this drama is.

This is the kind of drama that makes you raise your standards. That's how good it is. Need I say more?

I hadn't even finished it but I knew I was going to put it on this list once I did, so I put it on here before. That's how good this was.

This was a rare example of when the hype didn't convey just how great the drama truly was.

The stop-motion, animation, color, and lighting is superb. It's amazing to look at and also quite haunting. What a different drama. This is something spectacular.

Very much reminds me of Coraline.

It's difficult to put into words how much I adored this. It was healing, saddening, horrifying, beautiful, and also INCREDIBLY funny.

During the span of every episode they managed to tug at my heartstrings, shock me, make me giggle/burst out laughing, start to cry, and also smile.

The side characters, if you can even call them that because they were so unique, were perfectly balanced with the main characters. Each of them developed over time and had the right amount of screen time to let their personalities shine through.

There was not one character I wasn't interested in/ didn't find enjoyment in seeing on the screen. And the way they tied in the fairy tales was just brilliant! And there were so many great callbacks and amazing uses of their younger selves in shots.

In other words, I loved it.

The first episode was nice. The lighting was good and Taekyung's subtle expressions are fascinating. The romance itself will be rather predictable I imagine, but not in any truly negative way. I really like this loner character they are going for and I think that will be the main appeal for me.

    Update after completion:

This drama is so complex. The characters aren't one dimensional but have a lot of layers to them. The love triangle is also legitimate and leaves you feeling torn.

While the romance seemed predictable, the way it was shown and felt by the characters was anything but. The friendship aspect was also very well-done.

I cannot stress enough how real the characters are and how much effort was put into incorporating small but important details into this drama. I would go on to describe just how much background and thought was put into Da On and Shin Woo alone but that would unfortunately lead to me spoiling a lot. This is a drama you do not want to be spoiled!

Expectations, peer pressure, anxiety, and trust issues are just some of the things showcased well here.

It's not all serious though, there are a lot of delightfully awkward moments, etc, to make you laugh.

One of the best dramas I have seen this year.

I was SO conflicted about my rating!!! I Wanted to give this a 10/10. But We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd was starting to look better than this first series.

However, after finishing it, I can confidently say that the first series does manage to stay on top.

All I know is that I have rewatched this an unhealthy number of times. The acting is superb, the story is different, the soundtrack is great, and the pacing is perfect.

My previous 8.5/10 rating was silly. And so was my 9.5/10 rating. After the second series aired, I knew I had to increase my rating to a 10/10.

I love this couple so much. And I love how they managed to accomplish in 6 episodes what most can't in 20.

Is this the right place on this list for it? I'm not quite sure. I'm going with my heart on this one, just as Bong Ji Hong, a fellow lover of poetry, does.

And, so, I have reached the final chapter of Romance is a Bonus Book. Like a good book—no, a great book—it moved me as it brought me along its thought-out journey. I picked this up quite a while ago. And, after perusing through it, though I was intrigued, I placed it back on the shelf. I wasn't sure I could spare the time. I'm so glad I dusted it off and picked it up again to finally finish it.

There are many things to adore about this drama. The transition shots in some episodes can range from good to absolutely dazzling, the acting is on-point, there are many unexpected twists, the characters are likable and unique (the side characters get the right amount of screen time and development), it showcases the unfairness of age discrimination/ageism, and it knows when to throw in comedy and sweet moments to help you get through the more upsetting/sad parts of the story.

The best part about this drama though is that it is in many ways a love letter to books. From showing how much effort goes into making a book as well as selling it to treating books as precious and items that should be respected. As a lover of books myself, I felt this drama speaking directly to my worn-pages-adoring heart many times.

Dear Romance is a Bonus Book, for making me laugh, for making me smile, charming me, hurting me, healing me, and bringing me to tears many times, "The moon is beautiful."

It's Classic K-Drama, including all the bells and whistles with bickering leads, clichés, and cheesy moments, but better.

For anyone who grew up with a dysfunctional family who either intentionally or unintentionally fed into/allowed issues to fester, leading you to be the overworked glue, the underpraised perfectionist, or the babied without expectations, this is a hard-hitting but cathartic watch. Here, you're finally seen. Cry and scream because you're allowed to; it was unfair. You shouldn't have felt the need to keep everything to yourself. . . . And they were soulmates. No, no, I'll see myself out.

I may be disliked for comparing this to The Untamed (TU), but I can't help it. Lol.

I think the plot is much easier to follow here than The Untamed. And the flirting is much more obvious than even I thought possible. I don't know how these flirty bastards got their flirty lines past censorship. Calling each other's name like that several times? Ooooh. Screw you censors! They got it across! I had chills. Chills!

The fighting was also more fun here. Loved Wen Ke Xing being a badass! But, maybe that just had to do with their smiles :)

Also, this was much less tragic than TU. Which I definitely appreciated. Don't get me wrong, I was very moved by what happened to/was revealed about certain characters. But, it didn't feel like in TU where something horrible would happen and they would continuously drive the knife deeper and deeper for episodes after. Maybe it's because this was shorter?

Overall, I had a wonderful time watching this. I can see myself coming back to binge it in the future.

I really truly can't figure out where to put this on this list. I don't know. I really don't. So, I'm just putting it here because I have no idea.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

What can I really say about The Untamed? It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me bloodthirsty, and it made me sentimental. I became attached to Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan. And even though it was censored, the chemistry and romance between them still came across. They did everything they could to achieve that, and I noticed and felt that while watching it.

50 episodes seemed daunting when I first began. Now, I feel that time was very much needed. Don't let the number intimidate you. Trust me when I say that when you reach the last episode and it's in its final minutes, you will think back fondly and also sadly to how it all started back at the Cloud Recesses and feel tears come to your eyes as you wonder what it will be like not being able to come back another day to see these people you've come to care for so much.

The short version: The way their relationship and feelings slowly shifted and developed over time was so lovely, sweet, and respectful. My heart felt full. I truly watched them grow as people and as a couple, supporting and protecting each other. I can see them teasing each other and leaning close, wrapping their arms around each other, looking for comfort after a long day many years later.

In conclusion, I fell absolutely madly in love with this couple's love. If you are wary of C-Dramas like I have been in the past, are a slow-burn romance lover, and/or simply want to watch something light and fairly low-angst, give this a chance.

The fantastically executed concept, action-packed and thought-provoking story, well-written dialogue, consistent pacing, incredible acting, and white-knuckles and at-the-edge-of-your-seat levels of engagement came together here to make a drama that I desperately wanted to finish as soon as possible but also never wanted to end.

My only—and I do mean my only—gripe is the sometimes inappropriate use of music. Sometimes an out-of-place romantic track or loud tune would come out of nowhere and take you out of a scene when having no music would likely have been the better choice.

    29. Youth of May

    Korean Drama - 2021, 12 episodes

I might put it even higher later after I have some time to think about it

"You fill up my senses. Come fill me again. Come let me love you. Let me give my life to you. Let me drown in your laughter. Let me die in your arms. Let me lay down beside you. Let me always be with you. Come let me love you. Come love me again."--Annie's Song by John Denver

The period of time they spent together was so short when you add up the days, or even the hours. But, each small moment was infinitely precious.

My Grandmother met my Grandfather and married him quite quickly after meeting him. It didn't take long to realize it was love, and instead of waiting they jumped into it together against others' advice. If I remember correctly, it was only a week. They had more time than Hee Tae and Myung Hee ever wished for after they married, before one of them left the other behind to live on without them. And then, they too followed after many years later. They weren't perfectly happy together and I'm certain their love wavered at many points. But, I'm certain it was real and true in the beginning though it felt as if it faded at times.

Would it have been better if my Grandparents had never met and one had not had to suffer the others' absence? Or, was the time where they were both so in love in the beginning and together worth it all?

We don't have a choice when it comes to love. We can't choose when it happens, who the person is, if the timing is right, when they will leave us, or to stop loving them.

Love is powerful, wonderful, and healing but also can cause the most pain out of anything else in this world.

"In here, I will write our story. From time to time, please dust it off and read it for me."

As a writer and as a human there is also nothing more I could long for.

"Why do you write?" The same question presented to Han Se Joo.

I will answer: So, someday when I am gone, they will read about me. Those I love will learn about me, what I thought. They will remember me, not just as who they knew but also as who they didn't know.

I walk away from this drama thinking about the the characters' stories that were revealed to me as well as how I will write my own.

Sadistic and artistic. Very much my cup of tea.

All of the characters are highly intelligent, frightfully clever, and insanely suspicious. Not to mention our main leads exist in this morally grey area for a majority of the runtime.

There is something so insanely cool and entertaining when they team up, even if it's for a brief moment. Such a fun buddy-cop duo.

The purposeful jabs and joking flirting were entertaining but I also very much enjoyed the (even though they won't admit it) trust they had for one another as well as how their deep bond was shown through gestures, very emotional dialogue, and intentional physical touch.

Also, getting back to the supporting characters, they were very well-executed and there was a detailed personality and background for each of them.

Not to mention the soundtrack? It's upbeat but also dark which sets this uncomfortable tone when the music kicks in.

I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the acting. They make you never want to look away from your screen for anything, just to see their complicated facial expressions.

    Overall, an absolutely amazing drama!

The power was very cool and the ML was goofy yet charming, emotional, and sincere. He and the FL really grew over the course of the drama. He became more serious and she was able to open up and express herself. Together, they were finally able to lean on someone and let their pain go if only for a little. I cannot express enough how much I loved their relationship. Not just for their amazing and sweet chemistry but for their support of each other overall when they came into each others lives. Truly, a gem of a couple.

I cried much more than I thought I would watching this and more often than not was surprised by the twists I didn't see coming.

I started it thinking it would be more of a drama to watch casually for an interesting time and a few laughs. But, I became attached to this small cast of characters. I grew to care and worry about them each passing week.

As I end this, these thoughts come into my mind:

"We use every possible means to heal our scars from the past. But the scar remains and becomes an unforgettable memory. It requires too much time to fade away. This passing moment, I wonder... What kind of memory this will be to me?"

About dancing, growing old, etc, and is sentimental and highly emotional.

It showed a subtle contrast between youth and elderly, passion/lack of passion for dancing, as well as how some people live their lives for others instead of for themselves. I had a feeling this would tug at my heartstrings. It did more than tug. I especially liked how they showed the negative influence family members can be, particularly at quashing ones dreams. As well as how family can come together and be there for you when you most need them, and those who strongly opposed you can become your greatest supporters.

Side note: Also, don't blame children for the sins of their parents. It's NOT their fault! They are NOT responsible for their family's horrible actions!

This is fantastic! There is so much to be found in this series. It is very rewatchable. There is a lot of symbolism that can easily go over your head if you're not paying attention. And little details that will pop up again later.

Also, don't get me started on the soundtrack. Every song was perfectly chosen and fits the scene it was paired with.

This series also destroys stupid stereotypes and actually has some great conversations with teaching moments. This is not a series to skip! It deserves the hype and praise it has gotten.

  • He's Coming To Me

    Thai Drama - 2019, 8 episodes

I had this on my list for quite a while. I knew I wanted to get to it, I just didn't see it as a priority.

I thought I would end up rating this 8/10 stars, and see it as something I very much enjoyed but not as anything incredible. I was SO WRONG.

First off, the OST, and the calm and quiet nature of the drama itself during many episodes is something to behold. It's very similar to 1000 Stars in that way. Although I find myself preferring this drama to 1000 Stars, despite my having seen the latter first.

I was intrigued by the first episode and really enjoyed the aesthetic look of it, as well as the sound and pacing. By the time the third episode came, I was enjoying it even more for the mystery and the believable banter and chemistry. It was becoming even more heartfelt as well.

The fourth episode came and I was blown away. After one particular conversation I changed my rating to 8.5/10 stars.

Then episode five came. And I was blown away again. I didn't think it could improve in so short an amount of time. But, it really did!

By episode six, I knew I had to rate this drama 9.5/10 stars.

I don't think I've ever experienced a drama that made me change my rating SO QUICKLY! And between episodes no less!

Normally I will start a drama and know what I'm going to rate it in the end by the second episode. That rating almost never changes.

But, this just... Did so much. And it did it SO WELL.

This drama handled sexuality and coming out perfectly. And there was so much heart and passion put into this. You can feel that the actors really gave their all.

Also, it tackles the idea of loss in an honest and vulnerable way.

All I can say, is that you should watch this. It is a very heartfelt drama.

This drama perfectly captures what it's like to not be straight and be in the closet.

You can go through life "comfortably" if you only ignore one of the biggest parts of yourself. But, you can't completely. Because, it's who you are.

I hope in the end Jun does find himself Somebody To Love. Not someone he feels like he has to love or should love.

Side note: I really like the use of Queen's music by the way. What a marvelous choice for this drama! So glad they picked them! The titles of the songs and the messages in them fit the situations and episodes perfectly.

Watching this all at once makes me believe releasing it in one day was the right decision. It flows and feels like a movie, not a drama. I don't think you'll like it or appreciate it as much if you just see an episode or two a week.

This. This is top-tier. If Romance is a Bonus Book is a love letter to books, Blueming is a love letter to films.

It manages to capture "a feeling" in every scene, and the cinematography is everything. Semantic Error went for a style similar to its original work, with bright colors and loud music and graphics. This was toned-down, with warm colors, unassuming music, and subtle cuts.

Both are great, just in different ways.

I loved how, at its core, this was about opening up to someone. Finding a person you can share your insecurities with who won't look at you differently because of it, someone you can comfortably be vulnerable with.

Sexuality wasn't even a topic or issue because it was of no importance to the story being told. It wasn't the point. Seeing people onscreen actually declare their sexuality is great for representation. Having it be a non-issue is also great. We can tell stories with LGBT+ people without necessarily making it about them being LGBT+. Straight romances and stories aren't generally about them being Straight; it's about the story.

When I reached the end of this film, I realized it had never come up. And my reaction was simply, "Oh."

    This was lovely.

    Korean Drama - 2023, 10 episodes

    10

The Eighth Sense was a masterful lesson in care and vulnerability that pulled no punches and went all out, not just in terms of outstanding cinematography and immersive storytelling but also diving into the mindset created by depression, trauma, and anxiety as well as the behaviors that result from tackling them alone and with support.

The character of Jae Won embodied depression and trauma recovery so well:

Looking out at the world and your own choices from a fishbowl view. What you want to say and do and what you don't become blurred like water. And even being able to see it clearly doesn't mean you can reach out; grasp it. You're sitting outside yourself, numb to the world and unable to express what you truly want to because everything is just so heavy, and how could you drag someone else into that and weigh them down with you?

And then there's someone like Ji Hyun, not a savior or an angel but a person unexpectedly possessing gorgeous boldness and frankness, who understands and even when he doesn't is there to push when the net is wound too tight and listen when it's suffocating but Jae Won needs to undo it alone.

More than a romance. More than a Queer drama. Cinema at its finest.

I want to rate it an 11. But since that isn't possible on MDL, I'm going to give it a 10.

Will this make you cry? Undoubtedly, yes.

But this is such a masterpiece. I would even argue it surpasses the first To My Star. The use of flashbacks with the present, the small details that speak volumes, the carefully-threaded narrative, and the use of light and shadow were overwhelmingly well done.

I put my very very fragile heart in Hwang Da Seul's hands expecting the possibility of it being crushed. In return, she cocooned me in growth, patience, maturity, and honesty.

I don't feel like I can truly express the journey this drama took me on. This is all I can seem to say at the moment.

Audacious, harsh, cheeky, and unapologetically Queer, this drama, through the eyes of our imperfect ML, explores the vastness of love and loneliness. Cloaked in one-liners and self-deprecating humor, Go Young thrives in the nightlife, seeking affection but fearing love and letting anyone fully know him.

I drowned in the emptiness of his tired but still wide smile and rejoiced when he allowed himself to breathe and dared for more.

There have been few dramas I would label as "Queer Cinema." This one, however, easily fits.

It took me a while to finally complete this drama. I needed to find the "right time" and "right space" to go back and rewatch it before giving the last two episodes my full attention.

Like all of Hwang Da Seul's works, it was full of sweetness and pain. Small, intimate moments and little details that escape you.

I found the editing choices and time jumps to be an experiment I didn't quite grasp at first. They're both misleading and careful and careful in misleading you as a viewer. With context, the entire picture finally comes into focus, and you almost beat yourself up for not seeing it before.

It took time for me to understand Do Hoe's distance from Ju Yeong in the present. Ju Yeong's crestfallen face at his harsh words was agonizing to witness. Back then, when Do Hoe was in darkness, Ju Yeong's radiant smile had brought light.

But different people deal with trauma/hurt differently. Ju Yeong chose to look back and linger on the bright spots. Do Hoe couldn't. Instead, he blocked it all out and chose to remove and replace/refrain from anything that reminded him of what he went through. But that wasn't him moving on. He hadn't moved on at all. Only when Ju Yeong came back into his life and took him back to that place he hated so much could he finally confront it and start afresh. For real, this time.

    The curse has been broken.

It's bloody and brutal. Almost hopeless. A pitch-black hallway with a patch of light flashing and dying at the end, barely visible enough as to question it real.

A longing that in its infancy couldn't be realized. Brimming over with desire and shame, The Time of Fever captured the curiosity, confusion, and fear that often come with the experience of young love for Queer people. Chosen isolation, violent battles waged alone in your mind, denial, hesitant steps forward before sprinting away, jealousy, and parental abuse/distance.

The cinematography and sound design lent themselves to becoming the two MLs' senses, directing our attention to where their attention was. When Dong Hee picks up on Ho Tae's breathing and everything else goes quiet, when in a tension-filled moment, after allowing his gaze to linger, Ho Tae notices Dong Hee's eyes nervously flitting away from his own. The overwhelming grip of Ho Tae's hand on Dong Hee's shoulder, the taste of citrus on Dong Hee's tongue, and the scent of rain surrounding them and soaking both their clothes.

I was beckoned in and captured. Every moment was raw and real enough to make my own breath stop or send a shiver down my spine.

The only reason I considered giving this less than a 10/10 is because it sparked a longing in ME for more.

More than thorough enjoyment, I appreciated the unique world and full-rounded story they brought to fruition here. The game aspect made for highly creative and fun as well as stressful "mechanics," the use of harsh sound effects and "errors" in particular lended well to this.

Love for Love's Sake managed to toe the line between light action/almost horror and comedic school romance in a way I don't think I've seen before. And the banter between the two MLs allowed some levity in times when the world went dark.

Particularly, I want to highlight how they fully utilized the potential of Cha Yeo Woon's character, managing to hint at his desire as well as fear to be vulnerable and his shyness in expressing his interest in someone (Tae Myung Ha), all within a few episodes. And his actor plays his sulking moments and hesitancy very well.

Also, I would be remiss not to mention Tae Myung Ha's character; the quiet depth he had in a story that wasn't supposed to be his. And the complex expressions he had astounded me. Especially in moments he had to put on a happy face as well as convey that he was barely keeping it together.

I am so glad I didn't miss this surprising masterpiece.

At first I thought this would be some sort of mean parody. But, it's not.

Miki is a very strong character with an interesting personality and outlook on life.

Episode 3 was a particularly emotional rollercoaster. I was so impressed with the way they show her doubts, fears, and challenges in life as well as with family.

    This was soooo good!

I haven't seen any Gay Korean Romance movie before this that dealt with the mafia. The only comparison I really have is HIStory3: Trapped, but that is Taiwanese and also a drama.

I don't want to spoil anything about it. There were a couple scenes that were hard for me to sit through, but they added to the character so they were completely necessary.

It was bloody, action-packed, and somehow funny and light-hearted at times. They managed to achieve the perfect balance in tone.

    Thai Drama - 2019, 10 episodes

    9.5

Managed to get to this sooner than I thought. And it was already an exciting first episode. You immediately can tell that this isn't like other Thai dramas. This goes all out on action, shock-factor, violence, sexual stuff, etc.

Definitely a change of pace for me in my choice of Thai dramas to watch.

The representation was also new for me personally. I've never seen a Polyamorous relationship shown in a drama before. I think they did well with that. Along with that we also had a definitive Bisexual ML and another open/possibly Bisexual ML (he says he like boys for certain, multiple times, and does appear to be attracted to the FL and says he loves her but doesn't later confirm what his sexuality is so I suppose you could say he's open at the very least).

The connection between our 3 leads is the main draw. They genuinely care about each other and repeatedly go through horrible circumstances for each other.

Along with that we got a side character who was a transgender woman, both in the drama and in real life, which was great to see. And she wasn't set up as the butt of a joke or anything like that. She was her own person who grew over the course of the story.

All around a fun ride with fun characters, with some great representation.

    57. My ID is Gangnam Beauty

    Korean Drama - 2018, 16 episodes

    9.5

I'm surprised by just how good this drama was. I thought it would be on the same level of ridiculousness as True Beauty but it's actually very real, sensible, mature, and genuine.

The ML is not like the typical cold and jerkish MLs who only later become "good" guys who are really still jackasses who don't apologize for their mistakes. He is nice to who he wants to be nice to and isn't to others. Simple. The rest of his "coldness" is just his sarcastic and dry humor he naturally has. He also doesn't fall for the traps set by the opposing FL like so many other MLs do. Not once. In fact, he catches the lies very easily and isn't fooled by crying or anything. That was so refreshing to see!

The misunderstandings between him and the FL are very few and are resolved quickly. He doesn't generally assume she had bad intentions or believe what others tell him about her outright. Sometimes I got a bit annoyed with the FL but I understood why she still struggled with confidence issues and standing up for herself. And though she grew slowly I was proud of her journey.

The message is also incredibly well executed. We can diet to lose weight and get plastic surgery to "fix" our face but that won't necessarily make us confident or make everyone leave us alone/treat us as normal. In fact, it can bring more attention to us than before and cause new issues we never considered.

And there is nothing wrong with wanting to be skinnier or getting plastic surgery, just like there is nothing wrong with Not wanting to lose weight or Not getting plastic surgery. But understand that it won't make life perfect. It won't "fix" you. Your mindset is the biggest problem. And while you may be struggling with just being okay with yourself it isn't okay to push your insecurities onto others by rating their faces or judging them based on their looks.

This was so much more than I ever imagined it could be when I randomly saw the first trailer on YouTube. I was so close to not watching this masterpiece. I thought it would just be an average Thai Romance Drama in a school setting. I was SO wrong!

My expectations weren't high so my mind was absolutely blown when I watched it! This was enemies to lovers in its best form. The rivalry made for great fun/tension.

Pat and Pran had some of the best chemistry I've seen in a couple. Period. The actors clearly gave their all as well as just naturally clicked together and the decision to have them be enemies then friends then lovers made it all the more real. Their flirting and teasing was intense cheery gold, and SO them! And, they were just cute; dimples, a big smile with small eyes, and all. Lol.

The drama never felt forced and there were even episodes where the couple mainly just got to be. I found that very refreshing. They broke/addressed stupid stereotypes and problematic things: Calling your boyfriend "Wife," trying to label someone else' sexuality, not seeing a girl as a potential love interest for another girl, etc. etc. etc.

They also showed what a healthy couple and healthy communication looks like. Talking about your concerns and not pushing the other, and actually coming out of arguments seeing the other's perspective. And not just that but we constantly got moments from them of them comforting each other/cheering each other up. They really care about and love each other, and have their own unique sense of humor and inside jokes they share.

Also *squeals* we got a Lesbian Romance!!! Pa and Ink were the cutest side couple and my heart soared seeing them. I thought I was imagining things when there were hints in the beginning. But, they delivered on it!

This was so much more than an average drama. It made me giggle uncontrollably and bawl my fucking eyes out. Dammit.

This was extraordinary. The play on typical school K-Dramas with overly cold MLs, weak FLs, and typical clichés was great. Not just that though, this was a drama that kept me on my toes as it peeled back layer after layer after layer. I found each one fascinating.

This was warm and safe, as well as heartbreaking. A tragedy, and a light comedy.

The FL and ML snuggled themselves deep into my heart. Ha Ru was such a quiet and gentle soul and Dan Oh was so sweet and lively <3 Together, their chemistry was wonderful. I found their relationship absolutely precious. This was a love that I wanted to protect at all costs!

    Korean Drama - 2021, 12 episodes

    9.5

Anything to do with coffee or tea grabs my attention. Plus, I heard it was just very soothing. Indeed, it was :)

The ML was absolutely wonderful. He's just so precious, well-intentioned, considerate, and respectful.

This drama was incredibly calming, just like a steaming cup of tasty coffee. If my mood was bad I could watch just one episode and feel a little bit better and more optimistic. I also loved how there was no real drama here or any unnecessary conflict. It was as easygoing as the café owner himself.

Each episode centered around some new character coming to the café at one point and the ML or even the café owner learning something from the experience.

I felt I learned something too each episode.

If you want something with a driving plot or incredibly emotional this isn't what you're looking for. But, if you want something slow, quiet, and pleasant to start, or even end your day, I think you'll enjoy this.

I am mad at myself that I took this long to get to it.

I loved everything about this drama!

I was entertained by every episode. Bok Joo (FL) and Joon Hyeong (ML) were both spunky cooky people with energy off the charts, Bok Joo's group of friends was supportive and fun (SWAAAG!), and misunderstandings weren't annoying or dragged out.

Also, it was great to see counseling not only recommended but seen as something not shameful. Characters were able to talk about it casually in conversation.

Bok Joo and Joon Hyeong were so cute and natural together. They kept their wackiness and awkwardness and just got some delightful sappy eyes and lines. The pure adoration for each other all over their wonderfully stupid faces made me want to cry. The ML in particular could not hide his "in love" look for the life of him.

"A time that's more beautiful because it's awkward and clumsy, a time that shines brilliantly."

That was my time with this drama.

Only Japan could pull something like this off. The way they went along with the premise like it was just another day was brilliantly executed.

Complex and mature characters who are more than stereotypes, surface-level judgments, or their past, impactful shots/cuts and acting and gut-punching dialogue, and honest, nuanced, and thoughtful perspectives. That was "Silent."

While I absolutely found this beautiful and meaningful, I will say that I can see how it could be difficult to get through for some people. It features a quiet romance, doesn't sprinkle sparkles over everything or give easy ways out of things, nor does it have flawless characters.

It led me along through a fantastical fairytale world of Kawas and humans, looming doom, and pieces of hope . . . Only to not only remove the blindfold from my eyes but leave me to walk alone.

I prefer the original lie to the world made to cope. But how dare I when I should be grateful just for the time and memories?

This ending left me caught between bitterness and appreciation.

    Side Note:

What a dreamy movie. It felt like going on a long and slow walk around your hometown in the middle of the day.

Chihiro keeps such a positive outlook and attitude about life. It was sad to see her have such a full heart and spread so much joy in her community only to be alone so often. I feel it was the movie's way of quietly expressing how society had shunned her for her past as a sex worker, though.

How wonderful that she did find her people.

Regarding Representation: Color me surprised by the FL being able to quite easily be interpreted as Aromantic Heterosexual. I was not expecting it!

To truly find comfort when you are miserable, you need someone who has been there—no, not been there—is there. In a way, that means you're glad they're in misery, though. But is that so wrong? To wish to find someone to look through you and sigh because they see it, feel it.

I've watched many a comfort drama. Many fluffy, sugar-filled pieces of media to go to to laugh and smile until I forget my worries. But never have I ever felt seen through in a way that hurt but healed, like this drama did for me. This was the familiar chill that seeps into your bones after stepping outside that reminds you you're alive.

    77. Tell Me It's Love

    Korean Drama - 2023, 16 episodes

    9.5

His heavy back and her set eyes, their shadows came together.

We forget that being in love doesn't just mean opening yourself up to love and be loved by someone; it also means opening yourself up to hurt. Putting into someone's hands your still-beating heart and trusting they won't squeeze it too hard. After all, we are hurt the most by those we love.

It is a terrifying and courageous thing to have been hurt by someone you loved and even think of giving another person the power to hurt you like that again.

But we not only deserve to take that risk like everyone else, we owe it to ourselves, when we're ready:

    "I think I needed time
    To dare
    To take in air
    Alone."

I took my time to sit with them in their pain and quietly heal along with them. And then, the world wasn't magically brighter, but a room was finally tidied, a picture was hung where it belonged, a tent was used, and a walk was taken.

    It was time.

If you're in a place where a heavy and healing melodrama would do you good, I recommend this one to you.

The sheer joy I got from watching this goes beyond words. This wonderfully balanced couple with admirable sincerity and strength (and hilarity) shined. And the way they managed to respectfully and realistically portray the FL's disability and how it affected her life and relationships but was also not a negative to her was nothing short of wonderful. She is as normal as the ML is. She needs assistance as everyone else does, just in different ways, and that does not make her any "less."

If not for their temporary breakup near the end, I would be giving this a 10/10.

A beautiful and emotional drama that took the "right person, wrong time" experience and expanded and breathed new meaning into it.

The approach this drama takes with time takes some getting used to. But once you understand its purpose of connecting emotions rather than linearly laying things out so as to be easily understood, you come to understand how frightfully clever and perfect the cuts between the present and different points in the past truly are.

Project S: Spike astounded me, and Project S: Skate Our Souls was no exception: A tightly-written script with mature themes and topics done in a mature yet surreal style that leaves a part of your chest aching—this time, featuring not only accountability but "selfishness" and depression.

Where do I even begin to review this drama?

This was a deliciously teasing slow burn, with the tension (and my anticipation) only rising with each new episode. It wound up getting crazy hype; I'm of the belief it was deserved.

They paid attention to the details here: From meaningful items that come up/are shown in the background—even quietly revealing to the viewers how things are progressing—and minute shifts in framing and lighting of scenes to detailed dialogue with weight, symbolism, and double meanings.

Impressively, while the subject matter was often serious, they somehow smoothly incorporated belly-aching comedic moments as well.

Finally, I would be remiss not to praise the actors, as not only the MLs but every side character nailed their roles.

My only real critique: While the music was great, far too many times, it came on too strong during a pivotal scene.

I would absolutely recommend watching this! You don't even have to join the cult, as you can now binge it—From an ex (?) cult member, Noir.

Nanno is just Nanno. A suggestion, a whisper in someone's ear, a slight shove, perhaps a shift but not the ultimate cause, which is, of course, the dark side of human nature.

There is undeniable chaos in her wake, but can she and—even if she can—should she really be blamed?

The insane acting chops from this actress to pull off this kind of eerily charming, vulnerable, truly sympathetic, yet otherworldly, twisted, and maniacal character amazes me.

This was some Black Mirror-type shit that haunted yet intrigued me. In other words, I loved it.

I have so much to say and yet can only say very little.

This drama was so thoughtfully and delicately put together. The relationship between the MLs slowly formed to the point their connection was unmatched compared to others. Always barely a breath away from the other, and yet untouchable.

So how to risk stepping on a live wire?

Even though they made my poor heart hurt from misunderstandings, this almost managed to be better than the first series.

The acting was even better than before! I don't know how that was possible as the actors already did a phenomenal job last time! They really stepped up their game for this. I'm guessing they had to draw from some very personal experiences to convey the deep emotions that they did, especially for episode 2.

I am so tempted to give this 10/10 stars. Especially after the intense journey of emotions that was episode 2. My God.

The only reason I'm not is because I felt there was something, I'm not sure what, missing from the last episode. Perhaps a deleted scene?

They really did a great job with this though. It was a worthy follow-up!

Wow! This was a short film unlike any I've seen. The way they incorporated the colors of the Ace flag, placed you in the position of feeling like the woman during physical intimacy: crawling in your skin while hoping time speeds up, the quiet symbolism in the background. It was all so well-portrayed. I felt this truly spoke to the Ace experience.

Unlike some, I had a bit of a different interpretation regarding what the colors and, ultimately, the ending meant. The FL obviously dons the colors for the Ace flag, and then we have black and white. The Lesbian she meets up with and has sex with wears white, and her Straight boyfriend (and other assumed non-Queer people) wears black. By the end of the film, she gets in an elevator surrounded by people in black and chooses to zip up her black hoodie, declaring she is also black. To me, white represents the Queer Allosexual side, and black represents the Cis Hetero Allosexual (or Non-Queer Allosexual side, if you will). While she is truly Ace, she decides to conceal it. She could cover herself in white, but that would come with many more obstacles than if she took up the black mantle and blended in with the majority. Either way, she is concealing who she is; one comes with society's acceptance, though, making it the safer option.

    Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes

What got me to start this was knowing the ML from another drama as well as the absolutely gorgeous poster. I went in with average expectations, and I was not disappointed. It was better than I imagined.

Watching Kieta Hatsukoi and this back to back was an interesting experience. This featured a fairly masochistic character, some unhealthy relationship dynamics, and ominous music/shots. It's also somewhat dark but honest about it, with characters who are at times morally grey. But, believe it or not, you can enjoy this and KH.

This was an addictive drama that made me curious enough to go back and rewatch the recently released episode about six times before the next one came out. I had to pay attention to see what I may have missed. And there are quite a few small details that can be missed.

It was also wonderfully shot, had moments that promised something dangerous, and the music in particular really lended to the uncomfortable atmosphere at times. The light masochism was also quite interesting to watch. Not to mention they did a great job at building tension between Hira and Kiyoi. You feel those stares.

The way this was shot in particular really lended itself to the idea that Hira views Kiyoi as a King/God. They did an amazing job of making us see him the way he did too. On a pedestal. Above him. Some untouchable ethereal person. He comes into the classroom and a light shines on him while petals fall gracefully around him. He turns to the camera and gives us one smile and our heart stops. Or with symbolic moments such as Hira getting down on one knee to kiss his hand and even that small touch is so precious and he feels unworthy for receiving it from his King.

It continued on from the first series perfectly, but at the same time there were small changes in Hira and Kiyoi's dynamic; namely Kiyoi chasing after, propping up, and expressing more of his feelings to Hira.
