  • 1. Playboyy

    Thai Drama - 2023, 14 episodes

    8.5

I will stop ranking Playboyy at the top of every production list when it stops being the best at every aspect of production. This show was beautiful and so interesting. I loved the way that this show played on tropes of various types of media to create a textured, self-aware and interesting show. It's an absolute feast for the eyes.

Personal Highlight: Prom holding Nont at gun point, both times.

  • Interpret My Love With Your Heart

    2. Interpret My Love With Your Heart

    Thai Drama - 2020, 5 episodes

    10

This show is simply absolutely gorgeous. The way in which the cinematography and framing expresses the longing and closeness/distance of Teh and Oh-Aew is marvelous. I love the dramatic staging of so many of their confrontations and the super smart use of space. It brought so much character to this work.

Personal Highlight: It's a small moment, but Teh facetiming with Tarn, with Oh-Aew directly behind the phone.

  • Monster

    3. Monster

    Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes

    10

One of the biggest challenges of this show is that central plot points all revolve around brutal instances of femicide. How do you make these scenes artistic without becoming exploitative and voyeuristic? I really like where Beyond Evil ends up, with dramatic stagings that cut off before it becomes too graphic.

Personal Highlight: Dongsik in the Grocery Store with the sledgehammer (and it's snowing).

  • The Hidden Moon (Uncut Ver.)

    4. The Hidden Moon (Uncut Ver.)

    Thai Drama - 2024, 10 episodes

    8.5

The way in which this show used atypical editing to invite the audience into the main character supernatural experiences was very clever. Aside from this, the framing was absolutely gorgeous and dreamy, creating an unreal visual experience to enhance the unreality of the story.

Personal Highlight: The conversation between Mas and the housekeeper, overlooked by Khen, that takes place in front of two large windows.

  • Pornographer

    5. Pornographer

    Japanese Drama - 2018, 6 episodes

    9.0

This show was stupid sexy, I can't get over it. The entire series shot almost claustrophobically intimate and perversely personal, which perfectly encompassed the situation of the main characters. I loved how perfectly they managed to balance on "intimate" and "trapped" that exacerbated the central conflict of the story and foreshadowed the eventual resolution.

Personal Highlight: It's gotta be that kiss, man. It's gotta be.

  • Unknown

    6. Unknown

    Taiwanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    9.0

Have you ever watched the EveryFrameAPainting video on Snowpiercer called "Left and Right"? Unknown is "Up and Down" and it does it marvelously. While the editing is not always the cleanest and interrupts some of the flow, the intention is clear. It's especially impressive considering how cramped and awkward the house stairs must have been to film on.

Personal Highlight: Wei Qian giving in and the trip all the way back upstairs from where they started.

  • Not Me

    7. Not Me

    Thai Drama - 2021, 14 episodes

    8.5

The way that this series worked within the visual context of protest, performance art, and graffiti was truly stunning. The cinematography team had a really wonderful gift for the capturing the feeling of each moment and transcribing it visually. They were especially excellent in capturing representations of the art Gene, Yok, and Namo were creating as they performed.

Personal Highlight: The staging of the pride protest cannot truly be beat, but I do have to throw a bone to Sean using roman candles as flashbangs.

  • My Stand-In: Uncut

    8. My Stand-In: Uncut

    Thai Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    9.0

I am this production teams biggest fan. Though I think most of it is carried in the set design and lighting, it is unquestionably gorgeously shot. Camera angle is particularly relevant to this story, and they brought it in spades to some truly wonderful effect.

Personal Highlight: Every single moment of Joe's funeral.
