Movies/Drama Specials watched in 2020
Notes contain mild spoilers as well as some content warnings I felt weren't covered by the genre.
-
1. 200 Pounds Beauty
Korean Movie - 2006
The cover of Blondie's 'Maria' is the best part so just find a clip of that
-
2. Drama Special Season 10: Socialization – Understanding of Dance
Korean Special - 2019, 1 episode
My annoyance at the "i'm tall/short for my gender and it ruined my life" thing versus this special actually being...pretty good? Tries to shove a little too much into one hour but some really fun cinematography and dancing. Ymmv on the romance since it's more focused on character growth (not a bad thing AT ALL). CW for disordered eating/drinking and vomiting
-
3. Drama Special Season 8: The Reason We Can’t Sleep
Korean Special - 2017, 1 episode
cute in a quiet sort of way, doesn't try and force too pat of an ending
-
4. Drama Special Season 9: Miss Kim's Mystery
Korean Special - 2018, 1 episode
A fun hour, if ultimately highly predictable and forgettable
-
5. Juror 8
Korean Movie - 2019
Cute and heartfelt without being saccharine. Nudges at some judicial and societal issues. Ultimately nothing new but I liked that it never forgot "innocent until proven guilty" especially with a defendant who's disabled and neither nice nor pretty.

6. Plump Revolution
Korean Movie - 2012
i cannot tell you what message this was trying to send but it wasn't a very good one
-
7. Spellbound
Korean Movie - 2011
Solid movie, some iconic horror and comedic moments. Second half slowed for me
-
8. The Happy Loner
Korean Special - 2017, 2 episodes
Actually about a very Unhappy Loner who needs a better therapist. I wanted to like it more than I did but somehow just didn't click.
-
9. #ÎnViață
Korean Movie - 2020
A solid horror/thriller. Nothing new but it's fun, it has a happy ending, and at it's heart it's about two lonely people helping each other out which i love. additional CW for suicide attempts and excessive drinking
-
10. Train to Busan
Korean Movie - 2016
Started off good but a half hour too long and like. a dozen too many deaths for my tastes. Which is terrible to say about a horror/thriller but narratively there's a point where the number of deaths become overwhelming and I emotionally check out. I could probably write an essay on how this was aiming for a traditional tragedy catharsis and both failed and succeeded but that's someone else's future undergrad thesis

11. Drama Special Season 10: Rural Outcasts
Korean Special - 2019, 1 episode
Really cute, and I'm so happy to see a transwoman on screen but does slam you with the transphobia and the ending is bittersweet at best (falling into the "queer people can't have happy endings trap"). CW for transphobia, child abuse, mentioned CSA

12. SF8: Joan's Galaxy
Korean Special - 2020, 1 episode
Scifi has been dark lately so it's nice to see a sweeter short that places a beautiful developing relationship between two women at the forefront. Not explicitly gay but about as subtle as bat to the face. Plagued with the issues that come with shoving many sci-fi concepts and worldbuilding into 50 minutes. Miixed feelings on the ending
