Fun, but a "pretzel" ending

I'm a critical because I have a background in production, so you may think some of my opinions are harsh. First, I want to comment on the actors. My criteria for good acting is, if I can suspend reality, immerse myself in the story, and emotionally connect with the character, the acting is good. If the audience doesn't relate to the characters, everything else is irrelevant, because the viewer won't care about what happens to them. I cared about these characters. It was especially fun watching the FL and ML bicker and banter as their relationship developed.

The plot had good doses of mystery and mayhem, romance and evil, comedy and tragedy. The production values were good; the sets were believable, decent camera work, the CGI wasn't obvious, the costumes were attractive, etc. I liked the music because it was well integrated into the scenes, and didn't distract from the action. The genre is Wuxia, which I watch because I love martial arts choreography. I particularly liked the small details that made the ML's "wolf" abilities more realistic, like how he could whisk around so fast he was almost invisible, how his ear twitched when he used his augmented hearing, and how he could transform. There was only one instance of seeing his full transformation, which was disappointing. His character arc was well-defined, however, because he went from stone-cold to warm and affectionate. The FL had less of an evolution, but was a good contrast to the ML.

Unfortunately, the last two episodes were disappointing. Great writers can write great endings; mediocre writers can't. I like it when the audience gets rewarded with a cathartic moment at the end; sometimes it's joy because it's a happy ending, or a sigh of sadness because it was tragic, or they have a flash of insight because, although the ending may not be what they wanted, it was appropriate. Instead of a climatic moment, I felt betrayed. The reveal of the villain in episode 35 used an old, worn out, plot device to supposedly create a surprise twist. But the plot had to be bent into a "pretzel" in order to make the twist work. Instead of the twist being a dramatic moment, it was laughable, probably because I'm not Alice in Wonderland who "believes as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
After the reveal, the writer tried to stuff too many emotional ups and downs into the last episode. Some of it was satisfying, and the "dénouement" was good. However, after I managed to stay immersed in the drama's fantasy world for 34 episodes, I couldn't sustain it during the last two episodes, and crash-landed back into reality with a giant thud.

Lukewarm.

Warm on a Cold Night is a fantasy historical investigative drama set in a fictional Qian kingdom. Qian is a rich kingdom that attracts immigration from the neighboring Qi kingdom. The Qian are more cerebral and capable administrators with strong legal frameworks and institutions. The Qi subsist in the cold and harsh Northern climate and are ridden with internal strife. They are more primitive shapeshifters with formidable and fantastical physical powers. A longstanding treaty enables Qi immigrants to better their lives in Qian defending the border and engaging in more physically demanding professions.

A young Qian constable Su Jiuér questions a hot-blooded Qi suspect Han Zheng in connection with a serial murder case. She discovers that he has a strange ability to alleviate the incurable cold disease that afflicts her and latches on to him like a lifeline. They work together grudgingly after it turns out that Han Zheng is also after her suspect Mu Yan. They get off to a bickering start but predictably fall for each other as they investigate a series of mysterious cases that stoke tensions between the Qian and the Qi in the Qian capital. They are aided by friends in high places including Jiuér's admirer and budding playwright Prince Wen Jun, his brother Crown Prince Wen Ying, and the gorgeously spectacular Qi general Chi Lan.

The main romance is carried by Li Yitong's and Bi Wenjun's chemistry; their stunning visuals and incredible charisma. These compelling actors are short-changed by two-dimensional and inconsistent character designs and a frustrating script that is lacking in both character and relationship growth. Jiu'er is a smart and logical character, a keenly astute investigator of consequential crimes in Jiuxiao City. Except when she regresses into childhood, talks to herself in a whiny and high-pitched tone, and behaves like a complete nincompoop. I was dumbfounded at this exaggerated and shallow character interpretation. Still, Li Yitong is so innately likable that she successfully pulls off such a difficult character to connect with and invest in. Although Bi Wenjun delivers a more nuanced portrayal, Han Zheng as a character is equally exasperating. All this grumpy 60-year-old Qi shapeshifter seems to do is scowl, get jealous, lose his temper, and become reckless; rinse and repeat. This is a role with the potential to be interesting and multi-faceted but that is never realized. Initially, I was too busy marveling at how he makes a fanny pack and flowery kimono print robes look so hot. As I soak up his bold, expressive eyes, the high-tanned cheekbones, haughty nose, down to... dry, chapped full lips... wait... did they run out of money for lip balm? Ouch - hope they didn't need to do too many retakes of those kiss scenes. Fabulous visuals don't cut it for long - I was quickly left wanting more from these stagnant roles locked in a juvenile romance that moves at a snooze pace.

In sharp contrast are Chi Lan and Wen Ying's much more complex and interesting stories. Both personas were clearly written by a much more sophisticated and mature writer and they anchor the show. Chi Lan is an awesome female role; measured, analytical, poised, and as cool as a cucumber with a barely perceptible air of danger about her. This lady knows when her head is being turned but if it pleases her, she permits it anyway. And you don't want to mess with her because she makes for a deadly adversary on any battlefield. Her interactions with Wen Ying are laced with tension and have real depth and complexity. Wen Ying is her true equal, another fascinating and layered personality who is at the surface cultured and sincere yet incredibly difficult to get to really know. Theirs is the romance I cared about and they are the main reason I did not drop this drama. I would love to see their story continue down the road. He Ruixian proved to be the true star of this show with her incisive portrayal of a remarkable character.

In terms of world-building, this is a wildly imaginative one that is original and different but errs on the side of being overly far-fetched. The world's "rules" are not firmly established and seem to be made up along the way. This is especially true in terms of the many functions and effects of the cyborg like the Qi vitality stone stuck to the chests of these shapeshifters that are wolves until they become apes. The writer also unnecessarily creates insurmountable biological obstacles between the Qi and Qian races just to impress upon us the depth and endurance of the main love story. It smacks of the work of an immature and lazy writer who couldn't be bothered to show us that their love is epic instead of forcing it upon us. What I like best about the world is the Qi's superpowers and how they engage in combat. The fight scene choreography is amazing; energetic, hard-hitting, lethal, and thrilling. I especially enjoyed watching Chi Lan's badass and deadly grace in combat.

As for the mysteries, they run too long and while they are quite interesting, the only memorable one is the painting case. Their strength is not in the plot but in the wonderful job the production does humanizing the victims as people who lived, laughed, loved, and will be missed. They also tie in nicely with the main conspiracy which is well-conceived. While some of the villains are too obvious, the mastermind hides in plain sight and surfaces with a nice twist. Although I suspected them quite early on, the acting was so masterful I doubted myself until the reveal. As for the ending, it was a mixed bag - an epic showdown, a great escape, some noble idiocy, a bizarre reversal, a ruler is anointed and loose ends aplenty. All things considered, this drama is true to its hot and cold theme in leaving me lukewarm. I rate this 8.0/10.0 simply because of the mastermind twist, without which it was a solid 7.5 all the way for me.

Sweet Romance, Great Acting

Since time immemorial, humans have fantasized to possess supernatural bodies, with powers to see through walls, to hear even the slightest sounds, to smell the faintest scent, to speed like a cheetah, to feel nature, and most of all, to stay youthful and to live to hundreds of years. This drama gives the viewers a glimpse of how such powers can bring as in Han Zheng (Bi Wenjun). Together with a love triangle, suspense, and investigation, this is a very delightful story.

Han Zheng is a subhuman species (homo “whatever”), Qi people, living in the north. He has come to the south to seek his best friend who has disappeared with the “seed fire” which is of utmost importance for the survival of his species. In the south, he meets Su Jiu’er (Li Yitong) who is a sickly homo sapiens (Qian people) constable, brilliant in solving cases. Through unexplained reasons, they always find it soothing when they touch each other, and each time, Su Jiu’er feels rejuvenated. After some time, they both fall in love with each other. Together hand in hand, literally, they solve one mystery after another, and eventually expose the greatest conspiracy.

I must commend the production team in the selection of the cast. Bi Wenjun is tall and good looking with a face that says he can transform into his “natural” form anytime. He’s the perfect fit as the description of the Qi people are said to be tall and strong. His acting is very believable especially when he is flummoxed by the Qian people’s traditions and habits. In contrast, Li Yitong is petite and cute, and makes a very convincing feisty Su Jiu’er who is intelligent and not cringey. She has amazing chemistry with both Bi Wenjun and Chen Heyi who plays the character of Prince Wen Jun. Despite a love triangle, the friendship of the trio is warm and lovely, and makes the viewers root for both male leads.

All the characters, even the hidden antagonist, are lovable and the use of actors appropriate. The CGIs, fighting, horror scenes etc are believable and still maintain a lot of humors and jokes. Though there could be a few plot holes here and there (such as Han Zheng suddenly knows how to read Su Jiu’er’s letter in Qian language), it doesn’t lower my enjoyment of the story. My only regrets are, the potential of a great second couple fizzles out, and by the end of the story, the antagonist is still missing. It seems there will be a season 2 soon.

My Verdict
Great watch for all. Don’t miss it! Bravo!

One of my favourite dramas of 2023

This show is an excellent show to binge-watch as the end of almost every episode leaves you with a cliffhanger making you want to watch more. It has mystery, romance, love triangles, love between different races, some painful scenes, some funny scenes and many more that will make you excited to watch every episode. The reason I watched this is that I'm a huge fan of the ML. The FL is really pretty and quirky which made it very fun to watch. Their relationship and characteristics are so interesting, they started from enemies to partners to lovers. Their chemistry is off the charts, you can see it, especially behind the scenes. Li yitong might be the best match Bi wenjun has ever had since they act very naturally even outside of filming. I'm pretty sure I'm going to rewatch this after some time when I kind off forget the storyline because this drama really kept me happy and intrigued. A great watch, definitely recommend it.

Clumsy Su Jiu Er and her wolf Han Zheng

This show was really enjoyable for me as I've never seen an historical drama this good with crime investigation. I liked the clumsy duo of Su Jiu Er and her always drunk Godfather Hu Ba Dao, they were so funny when they worked together.
As for the story with Han Zheng I loved how him and Su Jiu Er were total polar opposites! She was always cold and he was warm, the same with their personalities. Anyway I felt like Su Jiu Er is sometimes too clumsy if you consider what job she has, which is a detective. I can't count how many times she fell, said something inappropriate and many more but I loved the personality of her. All the cases were interesting but the one I enjoyed the most was about one opera singer dying mysteriously.
The romance was slow but I enjoyed it so far. They were a perfect match for crime solving but for love as well. Even though Han Zheng didn't show his feelings towards Jiu Er that often I loved the jealous and caring him, he was so focused on saving his face when someone saw them together. But after this all things turned out in different directions because Han Zheng was wrongfully accused of killing Jiu Er's Godfather, but this issue got resolved in some episodes and I was happy to see Jiu Er gaining the trust in Han Zheng once more. I also think their relationship got stronger when Han Zheng got captured by Marquis Xian who was hunting for Qi people. I cried a little seeing them reunite after a while. I also loved how Han Zheng confessed his feelings to Jiu Er, I felt butterflies in my stomach. The ending satisfied me in a way. I was happy the three-scar man (Wen Ying) was sent to justice and our leads could be happily together, because they got married at the end!
Overall it was a great and fun watch! I liked the OST, I think the storyline could've been better sometimes but I loved the characters. I will miss them all!

Promising Storyline that didn't deliver

This drama had a promising storyline regarding special werewolf like beings living among regular humans. However, the script for the FL was terrible and eventually I stayed to watch just for the smokin hot ML. Omg, his smile lit up the cameras and when he turned "beasty", he was so fine! I've seen him in another drama where he was a blond, no no no, that color does not do him justice. His dark hair really fits him best. The downside was the FL, she was immature, annoying, not pleasant to watch. I got bored with her character very quickly. The supporting acctress who played the "General" was much more interesting to watch. she was deadly as well as beautiful. Overall, could have done a better job with the script.

Team Qi +Team Qian = Team Qi-Qian.

This show was something else. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to pick it up but I had seen BWJ in Silence of the Monster and wanted to see him in a different genre. Other than a few supporting characters and barely, I'm completely unfamiliar with the cast otherwise. So which is it? Team Qi, Team Qian or better yet Team Qi-Qian.

Pros: This drama had great OSTs and fighting scenes as well as a good fantasy angle. ML played by BWJ or HZ was my favorite even when he was rough around the edges and grumpy as all get out. I liked the mysteries when they had to do with the actual topic. The jealousy sequences were pretty funny too. I think more than fantasy, this had a lot of comedic elements, though HZ shape shifting that one time was pretty awesome. Reminded me a little bit of the movie "Underworld" with Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. The ambiguity of the CP and MY until the second to last episode and reveal blew my mind and probably what hitched this drama from an 8 to an 8.5. I have seen many Scooby Doo reveals before but not on this scale. Out of everything possible, I never would have predicted that one. Though I must say, after CP's dashing good looks, getting MY was a total letdown lol. It all made sense as soon as things were revealed, why CP had that reaction to Chilan when she first arrived, how with the spoon and water and hand washing, he was able to trigger her memories of MY and of course the other things we saw in flashbacks; chess playing, the dagger gift, same wine, same bday, etc. With a drama still so full of unanswered questions, all of these were put to rest. Though a good villain, MY's actual agenda harmed his race just as much if not more so then the Qian folks, so there was no greater good in his plan. It was all about power and control.

My 2nd favorite character was Chilan; the actress nailed that performance to a T. She was badass and kickass in every way possible. The perfect general, advisor, protector, and helping hand to HZ and the other two. I'm glad she became queen of the Qi tribe, she deserved that more than anyone. She had a heart of gold and could handle diplomacy well. Even though the love of her life ended up being the villain and a crazy one at that, she was still able to rise above that. I hope she finds her happiness with a wonderful person from whichever race. Same goes for WJ; I feel so bad for him. But talk about someone who started immature and grew to be a bit more forthcoming and understanding. He had an unrequited love for FL but thankfully this was a peaceful love triangle that retained its friendship of both parties regardlessly. But the fact that he decided to be a monk due an unnecessary character's issues as well as finding out his older brother was a fake for a decade, I've got no idea how his mental health was still intact.

Other favorite characters do include the FL or SJR but only when she was smart and mature, her ditzy side was less tolerable. She was a walking contradiction; one minute she would Sherlock her way out of the largest puzzle, the next she'd be walking around like a grown doll, talking to herself. Keha, Liu Fu, SJR's mom, Lao Hu, and Kaka were all great as supporting characters and their personalities meshed with whatever was going on in the moment. Though this was obviously a lower budget production, the costumes and sets actually fit their parties.

Cons: The amount of unanswered questions, cases that had very little to do with the main plot save bring the leads closer together especially why turn the Qi people into monkeys instead of wolves through that poison. Monkeys and wolves aren't from the same DNA pile and it was just completely out of the blue. Poisoned his own people just to make HZ choose between the race and SJR? MY was a total lunatic, yet developed a brotherly affection for WJ that he himself couldn't explain; probably because both were outcasts and WJ was innocent and too nice. The unnecessary cases which showed Qian people getting harmed, obviously didn't show MY's plan that all Qian's needed to die, but it actually set HZ to understand both races in a new light.

I wish they revealed answers like what did that Ember look like? Was it edible and small like the Qi stone? How did SJR ingest it in the first place and how was it removed? How did CP and his wife die? Where was the king this entire time? He wasn't seen onscreen again after the last treaty talk with fake CP in the early 20s of episodes. How did the entire city plus royal family just forget about the disappearance of CP aka MY at the end? No explanation but at the wedding WJ was now the new CP? HY was chucked into maybe 4 episodes and then disappeared just as randomly as she'd arrived; what was her actual purpose? Other then make people's skin crawl from her child-woman "gege" babble? It would have been way better if WJ was just left with his unrequited love and could fall in love again in the future instead of the vow of celibacy. So bizarre and quite unnecessary.

I also wish the ending was wrapped up better. The fight was awesome and brutal but that last episode, SJR's choice and flashbacks and HZ risking his life to save her, while great, it should have not just had a fade to black and explanation by SJR that he saved her, with a quick cut to wedding and explanation of the treaty signed though we don't know why, WJ is now the new CP without any real anything, SJR has HZ's powers, while he's basically a regular Joe. Instead, they should have shown her waking up and finding him awake by her side in this new world of them essentially switching. Then show both kings signing the treaty and having that being properly explained even the whole fake CP thing, then have a full wedding and her showing off her newfound skills after the fact not in the beginning. The way it was done was just slapped together for some unnecessary slapstick humor. Given that the leads only got together a few episodes before, the wedding should have been done right. You can save the comedy for the post credit ending. So not a fully satisfactory ending; it deserved better.

Would I recommend it? Yes. This drama had a lot of good elements if you could get past some of the confusion. Great mysteries for the most part, good acting, though a beyond slow burn romance, great characters, decent comedy. All in all, a good show.

Good Mix of Comedy, Romance and Suspense with some minor inconsistencies

It seems to be getting harder to find an original script in a Chinese drama these days, especially for wuxia/xianxia/fantasy. So, it was a pleasure knowing that “Warm on a Cold Night” is not an adaptation (it wasn’t noted on MDL). Although there are plot holes, I quite enjoy the general plot and the mystery cases, and how they all tie back to the big story. I am not an episodic-case person, thus, this type of cases/dramas are right up my alley.

Li Yi Tong is one of my favorite actresses and I believe in her acting ability. However, I am not quite sure of her choice to be in this drama. I feel that with her experience, she is way past acting as a young, cute (thank god not naive) girl in any drama. Nevertheless, I watched this because this drama was well-received and, well, I like her. For whatever reason, this is my third Bi Wen Jun drama this year after “Double Love” and “The Silence of the Monster”. I have yet to see him play a lively, active, outgoing character. His roles remain somewhat similar, cold, cool and hard to approach in the beginning. But I am glad to see his acting continue to improve and his role as Han Zheng differs in a way that I see his evil smirks and mischievous side a little.

Li Yi Tong and Bi Wen Jun have pretty good chemistry together. Bickering couples are one of my favorite tropes and I enjoy seeing two intelligent individuals trying to outsmart and work together to solve the cases. I also really enjoy seeing Bi Wen Jun/Hang Zheng’s smirks, loving gazes and when he acts all jealous. Li Yi Tong is cute as a button, and plays her role, Su Jiu Er, so well that she gains the affection of two good guys. I also am relieved to see that the love triangle is done well. It’s really hard to find the balance between bromance and love rivals, and I think “Warm on a Cold Night” did a good job in this respect. Wen Jun is such a thoughtful, caring and sweet guy and I felt bad he didn’t get the girl. There isn’t any character I hate and even the annoying 4th wheel Princess did not last too long. On the other end of the romance, I, along with many viewers, would love to see more of the story between Chi Lan and Wen Ying. If there’s going to be a second season, I wish we can see the continuation of where the drama left off.

I am actually more interested in some of the mystery cases in this drama than in “Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty”. I think my favorite is the one with the paintings. It was quite an elaborate set up with many twists along the way. But after that plot, the drama’s pace slows down a little and I lose some of my focus when binging. Overall, I am quite happy with how all these cases lead us to the finale. I was expecting a certain character to show their true colors, but not that final twist in the end. However, I think the final episode was too rushed. The transition from one scene/emotion to another is quite abrupt.

The production quality seems decent enough. Everything seems appropriate but not extravagant. Costumes, sets, lighting, etc, are just fine. The dubbing isn’t that great. Li Yi Tong continues to use her voice (she’s one of the rare ones), along with Wang Mao Lei (godfather Hu) and Li Shi Peng (Wen Jun’s bodyguard). All other actors used voice actors. The fight scenes in the first couple episodes are pretty good and I was hoping to see more. But I am disappointed that the action scenes disappear and even in the final showdown, there’s more pushing and throwing you across the room, than close combat fight scenes. There are only a handful of songs in the OST and they sound nice enough. Luckily, the songs are not overplayed.

Overall, I had a good time binge-watching this drama. It has enough comedy, romance and suspense to keep me interested. There are plot holes and inconsistencies, but not enough to dampen my viewing pleasure.

I believe this is a good show and worth watching. The actors are young and talented. The ML is tall and handsome. The FL is pretty and quirky. The Qi and Qian relationship and characteristics are so interesting. It is cool to see how the writer support culture and people difference in a storyline. It is not heavy. I look forward to each episode. I get to see FL & ML work together to solve crimes with fantasy and intelligent. The chemistry between the ML, FL, SML is great. The episode has martial arts fighting scene too. A lot of relationship building. Each episode a. Case is being solved. The SFL is good too and strong. I like her hats.

Only Lukewarm

I don't have any rave reviews for this one. The storyline was weak, the plot was full of holes and loose ends; characters who served little or no purpose to the main story and did very little to develop the characters or the overall drama.

The actors did a fair job portraying their characters, and for the most part the chemistry was ok. Just ok. Everyone was believable as friends, but I didn't feel much heat in any of the couples (what couples there were besides the main couple). I loved Chilan's character the most and am sorry her 'pairing' was a non-starter. I'm still trying to figure out the CP/Mu Yan twist. Wen Jun deserved his own happy ending, but I suppose he was born to be noble. The side characters too - Key Yun Cha - so underdeveloped and underutilized. Liu Fu - loyal and protective. Uncle Hu - a potentially loveable character, again, wasted. And what was the real story with Su Jiuer's father!? There wasn't even a hint of a real connection between him and her mother. It just seemed like pieces of a puzzle, thrown together on a big table, but not all of the pieces fit or were even put together.

And the ending! What was that? Where did the villain go? How did Chilan end up fighting in the competition? How did Wen Jun become the Crown Prince? I figured out why Han Zheng lost his powers, but there was no explanation to come to a conclusion. Are we to just guess and figure out a rationale? I'd say that's pretty sloppy work after investing in 36 episodes. But, as I said, the story was sloppily told, and a lot of time was wasted on solving side-story crimes with characters who really never added to the main story - just took up screen time.

OST was pleasant thanks to Liu Yunning. Sadly, no rewatch value for me.

story could've been better but that's okay

I started this drama when I was bored and it was really fun. My review has spoilers, so please be careful.

OST: Love the songs of this drama! Morning & Evening by Liu Yuning was a great opening song for this drama.

Story: I believe story could've been better actually. The first half was really good in comedy and crime. Cases were also interesting. It was different from other dramas and I had high expectations. However, second half was not as good as first half. There were lots of push and pull, discrimination between 2 races, predictable events and of course cliche love things. For example, when she was afraid to be with HZ because of what other people might think, cold ML changes and become soft because of FL, she decides to sacrifice herself and he sacrifices himself to save her, him not inheriting throne etc. These are what we saw every drama. I expected sth more than this cliches actually. But sometimes they made things I didnt expect which was good. Bromance and friendship between HZ & WJ were also one of the best things in this drama.

Acting: I didnt have a problem with acting of main leads. It didnt bother me how she acts cute etc. But some may found it a little bit off. Bi Wenjun was great as HZ I believe.

If you wanna have a good laugh and watch beautiful fighting scenes, you can give a chance to this drama.

In love with the whole story but some parts are rlly dissapointing.

There are still many questions left unanswered and I feel like there's more potential to the character storyline of Ah Qi. Where did he come from? Did he know it was Muyan? Where did he go? I still wanna know where Muyan went. Also, how the problem got solved so easily just with Female lead offing herself and male lead giving his powers to her to save her which is rlly disappointing. It seems like they completely forgot what Muyan said about the Qians. Like half of the court hates Qis but everything ended so easily without even a word from them?? I was expecting the whole storyline to be grand because of the number of episodes but they spent it solving meaningless cases barely related to main story and the villain didn't even do much and left so queitly. I'll be honest, I loved the main couple throughout the story but during the last 2 episodes, I can't even express how much I dislike them. Also, the whole storyline, countless couples, why was the main couple the only ones who got a happy ending? Think abt it. The fl's mom, the chef, Keyuncha and Si luqing, Muyan and the general, Princess Xian, Jun, and even that painter guy, none of them got to be with their lover and most of them are dead. So why did the main couple get to be so happy? The weak and useless girl even became strong. They're both alive and healthy and got to live how they want. Jun even though the person he loves is alive, he has to shoulder the responsibily of the crown prince and won't even get married. It's hard to tell if anyone else if as happy as they are. It also would've appreciated if they explained more on the story of Fl's dad, muyan and the original prince. It would've been alot more interesting. Other than all that, I loved the story and acting was great.
