The Errand Girl
Whilst being bullied for her looks, Lim Joo Gyung finds comfort in Hyun Bin, a guy who seems to share a common music interest. Falling for his charms, she plans to confess her love to him when she gets recorded by her friend being rejected and made fun of. Being depressed about becoming a laughing stock and having an ugly face inherited from her mother, Lim Joo Gyung decides to jump off the building but backs away as she realises, she does not want to die. Just as she is about to back off, Lee Su Ho (Cha Eun Woo) pulls her back, knocking the glasses from her face. Unable to see, and stumbling down the stairs due to out-of-order elevator, Lee Su Ho decides to help her by carrying her on his back. Lim Joo Gyung safely returns home to a ruckus, while crying, asks her family as to why she doesn’t have her fathers looks. In her room, she questions online, as to how to become beautiful. Amongst many suggestions, someone recommends make up. She tries it by going online and looking at various videos, but ultimately fails as she shows up to school with a horrible make up that gets her more made fun of. Coming back to online, the second time she finally gets various commentators to recommend her products and techniques, and is able to pull off a face changing make up. Now with a make up that makes her “beautiful” and a new school in which Lee Su Ho also attends, she starts a new life with a new face, leaving behind her “ugly face” home.

This was a very solid first episode. Starting right out of the gate introducing viewers to Lim Joo Gyung and how the world started ragging on her looks from baby strolling on. It's heart breaking to see how openly people call her ugly. Strangers seeing her as a baby and saying she's a boy. Then older playing a game with grandpa and they whole family just starts ragging on her. I just can't imagine your loved ones doing that and your parents just kind of snickering about it. The cruelty about her looks continues into high school.
And can I say as someone who has suffered severe cystic acne I was offended that it's such a big deal. I never had judgements about it cause sadly acne happens. Though if there's truth to the obsession of skin and pores like I see in the dramas I watch . . . I guess I can see that. It's a cultural thing.
What I love is seeing Joo Gyung's journey. Seeing what she bonded with to cope. The comics and horror things. Her taste in music. Even though she's bullied and runs errands for the mean girls she still has a sense of self. Despite it all she has confidence and stregth. Enough strength to ask a boy out! Go girl! Seeing the mean girl bait the guy Joo Gyung likes is heart breaking. Soon they're humiliating her as she's dumped recording it and adding injury to hurt. Not to mention this jerk of a girl takes away the guy she likes, but has the one person Joo Gyung thought was her friend join in the bullying. Because that's some seriously messed up psychological warfare. (I fear for this mean girl! What a on earth is going on in that head?)
Things turn dark. Joo Gyung is ready to end it. She thinks things through and decides not to. Enter Cha Eun Woo's character, Lee Su Ho, who sees her still on the ledge and saves her. Things go to a more lighted hearted bits in a truly talented fashion. With a hilarious piggy back stair scene. Despite what just happens Joo Gyung's kindness and empathy are powerful as she realizes the guy who saved her, a mystery to her yet as she can't see, must have known someone who committed suicide. She perceives this and even tries to comfort him. Then the hilarity of realizing she left a suicide voicemail for her mother.
Then things align Joo Guyng's dad messes up financially and they have to move back to their old house and a school transfer is an option! Woot! Joo Guyng's chance to start over comes and she's going to use the power of makeup to get her there. (And let's be real we all know she's really beautiful. Acne and glasses do not make a girl ugly!) I love seeing her journey with makeup! It was hilarious and reminds me of my struggles with it to this day! I also loved all the tie ins of Joo Guyng touching on Lee Su Ho's life! I love it when a drama shows how even though they don't know it the FL and ML are part of each other's lives.
It was fun seeing her family's reaction about the makeup after Joo Guyng has mastered it. Not to mention I wonder if they'll keep her secret and how hard they will be on her for doing it. Or if they even realized the type of abuse she got for being "ugly". Another super appealing aspect of True Beauty is the family it feels so real. Especially Joon Guyng and her brother. Who decides to blackmail her with photos of her real face.
The makeup discovering is going to be an interesting thing. Like the makeup is waterproof, but it rubs off on Lee Su Ho's school jacket just like that?
It's so uplifting seeing Joo Guyng be immediately accepted and her shock of it. Making friends and actually getting to go out with them and have fun. Forget getting a guy. Just having gal pals!!!!!!
I am shocked that Joo Guyng wasn't too nervous about going out without makeup on. Because of course she bumps into Su Ho immediately . Cha Eun Woo playing a different character a cold aloof person with made fighting skills. Very impressive. I love that they're fighting over a comic and end up just like on the roof. It's tickling my brain to wonder what Su Ho is gonna think seeing the girl that he thought he was saving from suicide in front of him. Er. On top of him.
I will say the episode ran exactly how I thought the plot would go to kick off the story. The writing and acting made a very obvious plot and story fun. Refreshing. Joyous. This is a deep message, but it doesn't feel preachy. I'm curious as to how the writer will handle it from her. I love all the unique touches and how they will give this story depth.
(Oh, and can I say how much I felt Joo Guyng's joy being in that comic bookstore!!!)

Eunwoo did so well! I can really see his improvement, and Suhos sincerity and his mask of aggression both came out perfectly. He and Gayoung have some really nice chemistry, as does the cast as a whole. The second Kang Minah and Park Yoona came onscreen, I felt they were right at home.
The way they woke Seyeon (Chani) into the first episode? A+. His OST had me crying, while Yujus had me dancing. I cant wait for more!
