Boys Over Flowers (2009)

I tried watching the Taiwanese, the Japanese, and the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango. The Taiwanese version did not work for me, I didn't find the full episodes for the Japanese one, and now we've got the Korean version. Let me just start of by saying that Jan Di screams too much. I'd also like to say that Ji Hoo was too... how could I say it... stupid? My friend however fell in love with him so let's ignore that. I remember being obsessed with this drama. I'm not even sure why I stopped. All I know is that I had a love-hate relationship with this drama. Oh... wait, now I remember. Jan Di was the reason. And of course, some events I could not quite comprehend. Alright, let's start with Jan Di. She's kick-butt, she's strong... and she's one heck of a loud crybaby with a Bella Swan complex. She can't decide with whom to be, once she's with one guy, she's thinking of the other... get what I mean? Plus, she's supposed to be strong and all that. But, after a few episodes, all I saw was some dumb girl who is not so smart. There was this one really important event that made me realize that. Also, I knew how it would end, since I read some spoilers... and some events had me like: "puh-lease". A while ago, I was pondering if I should give this a shot. Other than Kim Hyung Joong, the F-4 was quite a cute bunch. It had an interesting storyline... but Jan Di and the events really don't please me. Props to Lee Min Ho's character, though. While he was pursuing Jan Di, he was pretty cute.

at first i decided not to watch it but then i got really bored so i thought lets give it a try n i do not regret that
really nice drama the cast was really good

the f4 was the cutest in this version
i really liked the side story of the main lead's best friend which is actually the main reason i watched it to the end
the music was really good i really enjoyed the songs.....
what Jan Di did at the end to make jun pyos memories come back was the best scene in the whole drama but the best couple for me is ga eul n yi jung

this was the first version i watched n this was the best version of all
the story did started to drop at the middle but raised again near the end.....

This kdrama was simply wonderful. It had everything...love, romance, revenge, drama, comedy, action. I fell in love with this show the first episode and loved it so much that I watched the entire series in 5 days, I simply couldn't put the laptop away! I have since rewatched it too many times to count and will continue to re-watch it. I downloaded all the music and listen to it constantly. I loved everything about this drama...the story, music, acting and of course the actors! The story between Jan Di, Jun Pyo and Ji Hoo was heartbreaking, sad, romantic, bitter sweet and simply beautiful. It was the most amazing tale of enduring friendship and love between these characters. Lee Min Ho was the stand out for me, his portrail of Gun Pyo was so amazing he'd have me laughing in one scene and then crying like a baby the next. He was brilliant! I have seen a lot of Thai Lakorns and Kdramas but this is by far my favourite. As far as I'm concerned it was pretty close to perfect.

i love this show, the characters are great and the story is something that most people go through on a daily basis.I know I have. so much more fun than american soaps. love the guys esp Kim Hyun Joong. wish I could meet them all.Love Geum Jan di, she's the coolest. Overall, great show so far.The music is great. I never really thought about Korea, or learning about Korea before this. I am so interested in learning Korean so I don't have to read the subtitles, thanks for those.The show gets frustrating at times because you wanna see the people who are truly in love to get together, but you cant help love them all. This show makes me feel like I am a part of it.

Why it consists of such a rewatch value

I have seen so many K-Dramas now and much better than this one but somehow this drama stayed with me and for a while although i had to skip many a scenes to finally be able to finish it.

1- The initial episodes are very addictive purely on entertainment quotient they provide. As you reach deeper into the series, unimaginative plot, repetitive situations and innumerable separations and patch ups will make you cringe.
2- The story is the most cliche of it all, the situations are also not unique either but its the treatment given to it, especially the grandeur which gives it a big budget movie like feel.
3-If you are there for Lee Min Ho as i was then you will be disappointed as despite being the lead, he is not the one you would stay with when the show is over. Very silently the one who will win your heart is the second lead Kim Hyun Joong the then boy band sensation with charismatic looks and one of the most gorgeous smiles i have ever seen. The soft, generous, caring and charming Jihoo who will hold your attention from the very first scene.
4- The leads have almost non existent chemistry which is surprising as far as K-Dramas are concerned who are experts in this field. On the contrary the second male lead and the female lead have amazing chemistry but they don’t end up together. The male lead has good chemistry with another character artist.
5- The kind of relationships both male leads have with the female lead are literally opposite where one has trauma, abuses, heartbreak, other has care, affection, companionship and depth. But they tell us the one who is affectionate is a soulmate but not husband which was kind of illogical because they had established both as romantic relations and female lead had loved both the men in her life.
5- The OST is most certainly its USP. Its one of the best. The song i am stupid and a violin tune will be on your mind even after finishing this drama. Most Jihoo Jandi scenes are show stealers especially because of how well music is incorporated in their part of the story considering Jihoo is an artist.

First and Favorite KDrama

This was the first KDrama I ever watched after a year of being very hesitant to start watching KDramas and listening to KPop despite my Korean friends urging me to in order to aid in my Korean language learning.

So I guess it holds a special place in my heart, and I know I'm not alone. I do see tons of people saying "Ewww this did NOT age well." and I just roll my eyes because that tells me everything I need to know about them that they loved this show a few years ago but now suddenly they hate it and it's "problematic". It's a silly romcom.... chill out.

Anyways, this was my first exposure to everyone (obviously) and I loved the whole cast. To this day Lee Min Ho is a top favorite of mine, as is Kim Bum (especially after I saw him in Tale of the Nine Tailed and really fell in love). I was also really in love with Kim Hyun Joong and went on a binge of watching anything with him in it for awhile after this. Side note: Playful Kiss is insufferable. lol

This show had me up and down and all over the place. The only thing that disappointed me was that the ending felt really rushed and that she clearly had no business going into the field she went in to. Sorry, but come on.

Ok donc je viens d'effacer la review que je venais d'écrire. En voici donc la deuxième version, dommage pour vous toute ma spontanéité était dans la première. Remarque j'écris ce que je veux, c'est pas comme si quelqu'un allait lire ça haha.

Je disais donc que Boys Over Flowers est une adaptation d'un manga japonais pour filles très connu appelé Hana Yori Dango (60 millions d'exemplaire vendu c'est pas mal faut bien l'avouer). Ce manga a été écrit par Yoko Kamio entre 1992 et 2003 il me semble mais je suis très loin d'être une experte et beaucoup d'autres en savent surement plus que moi. Toujours est-il que ce manga a eu plusieurs adaptations en film, en anime et en série télé. Dans la catégorie drama on trouve : une version taïwanaise -Meteor Garden-, une version japonaise -Hana Yori Dango-, deux versions chinoises - Meteor Shower et Meteor Garden- et enfin la version coréenne dont nous allons parler aujourd'hui. Je suis très loin d'être une experte de Hana Yori Dango, je n'ai vu qu'un ou deux vieux films et la version drama coréenne et le drama chinois le plus récent (Meteor Garden 2018). Je vais donc vous donnez mon avis sur ce que j'en sais et vous en faites ce que vous voulez. Le Pitch en gros c'est l'histoire d'une fille pauvre qui se retrouve dans un lycée (ou une université, me souviens plus) de bourges, Et dans ce lycée de bourges y a 4 gosses de riches qui ont le monde a leurs pieds.

J'aime ce drama. Vraiment. C'est le deuxième que j'ai regardé (après Oh My Venus -pourtoujoursdansmoncoeur-) et il a surement une valeur sentimentale mais pas que ! Tous les dramas que j'ai vraiment aimé ont une valeur sentimentale parce que je me suis attachée aux personnages. Ils m'ont touché, émue, agacée. Mais les bons dramas sont, à mon sens, ceux qui vous font ressentir des trucs. Et devant Boys Over Flowers on est servis ! Très honnêtement je pense que ce drama peut rendre les gens violents. Les personnages peuvent être super frustrants. Mais ça, c'est pas que dans BOF (a.k.a Boys Over Flowers) c'est dans le genre en général. Quand on regarde un drama on veut du sentiment. Et parfois les personnages on a envie de les secouer, de leur dire de se bouger les fesses et d'arrêter d'être aussi empotés. Mais les personnages de dramas sont touchants aussi pour ça. Ils sont candides. C'est un peu des handicapés de la communication dans les relations amoureuses. Clairement: ils ne décodent pas. Surtout dans les dramas pour ados : les gars et les filles on croirait qu'ils ne parlent pas la même langue c'est hallucinant. Bref revenons en à nos moutons Gertrude.

Les personnages. Gu Jun Pyo : Lee Minho avec les cheveux bouclés ?! Sérieux ? Mais bon on ferme les yeux parce que son personnage -et ses habits- rattrapent sa coupe de cheveux affreuse. Profitons-en pour noter que à priori dans les dramas le budget fringues à l'air vraiment très conséquent, ça fait rêver. Gu Jun Pyo est un super personnage, il est pas hyper facile à suivre mais il a ce truc touchant, dont je vous parlais juste avant, du personnage un peu handicapé des sentiments qui découvre la vie tout au long du drama et c'est hyper rafraîchissant. Après Lee Minho est un bon acteur donc même les trucs bizarres passent bien. Geum Jan Di : personnage le plus énervant qui n'ai jamais existé dans les dramas. Préparez vous mentalement, les mimiques faciales de son personnage sont insupportables. Elle est bouchée. Elle capte rien, elle est coincée, elle en fait trop et elle est à côté de la plaque vraiment souvent ... Mais en même temps on s'attache à elle parce qu'elle est pas aidée dans la vie. Sa famille très touchante est très différente. Elle est confrontée au choc des cultures et elle ne comprend pas bien ce qui lui arrive ...
Mais la combinaison des deux personnages ça rend bien. C'est long, très long comme toujours dans les dramas mais il y a des moments où les deux personnages matchent vraiment bien. Ils sont touchants tous les deux et ça vaut le coup de souffrir par moment pour tous les autres bons moments. Personnage de Ji Hoo : no comment. Sérieux c'est trop le bordel cette histoire. Mais c'est un bordel qu'on aime où Gu Jun Pyo est le personnage le plus complexe et attendrissant au final. Gros gros coup de coeur pour le duo Ga Eul/Yi Jung qui sont ultra fraîchissants avec une bonne alchimie. Et les pétasses jouent bien leurs rôles de pétasses. Les gentils sont gentils, les méchants sont méchants, rien de surprenant, tout va bien !

Concernant le scénario, je vous le donne en mille, on a ici affaire à ... UN TRIANGLE AMOUREUX ! Non en fait il y en a plusieurs, plus ou moins convaincants d'ailleurs. A la fin c'est un peu lassant mais comme c'est à la fin et qu'on est déjà attaché aux personnages on a pas envie de lâcher. Et puis la fin est satisfaisante alors ça rattrape bien. Certaines intrigues principales trainent beaucoup (trop!) en longueur et c'est là qu'on est susceptibles de devenir violents. Pour les intrigues secondaires, j'ai rien à redire même si on aimerait que certaines soient encore plus exploitées. D'ailleurs je pense que certaines pourraient faire l'objet d'un drama à elles seules. D'ailleurs c'est bien fait parce qu'au moment où on est frustrés par l'intrigue principale y a les intrigues secondaires pour rattraper. Que demande le peuple ? Au delà des aspects sentimentaux BOF aborde aussi des thématiques plus sombres comme notamment : le harcèlement scolaire, la pression sociale et familiale, la lutte des classes ... Dommage que tout cela soit descriptif et pas engagé. Ce ne pense pas que BOF soit représentatif de la société coréenne. Je suis même plutôt sûre que non. Mais il n'y a pas dans BOF de réelle prise de parti. Néanmoins le spectateur éclairé saura faire lui même la critique de la société qui est dépeinte.

Il y a quand même pas mal de critiques à faire sur BOF et je ne dis pas que j'ai tout aimé loin de là. Certaines parties du scénario n'ont à mes yeux aucun sens et sont trop exagérées, le jeu des acteurs est parfois vraiment caricatural et très éloigné de la réalité si bien que s'en devient absurde. Mais globalement si vous aimez les dramas qui sont un peu guimauve et enfantins, ce drama est fait pour vous. BOF est pour moi un vrai classique du genre, ce qui explique surement son succès commercial. Un drama c'est ça : c'est loin d'être représentatif de la réalité et parfois surfait mais soyons honnête parfois ça fait vraiment du bien même si le genre est plutôt caricatural. A mon sens, BOF équilibre assez bien la frustration créée par les situations traversées par les personnages et leurs comportements, et la satisfaction lorsque ces situations se dénouent.

Donc pour moi c'est réussi : ça m'agace parce que ne va pas comme je veux et du coup quand ça finit par aller comme je veux je suis satisfaite. C'est ça les dramas non ?

Classic K-Drama

Honestly, I like boys over flowers and it has been one of the top watched K-dramas for me that honestly never gets old and always remains a classic to my heart. Honestly from the first episode, I was hooked up to it from the last episode, and the plots and dialogues to this day remain a classic. The drama gives you those types of 2000s old classic vibes that honestly were pretty enjoyable, those that we tend to binge-watch to this day; K-Dramas such as Princess Hours, Coffee Prince, Full House, My Girl, My Lovely Sam Soon, etc.

However, when I think about the drama to this day, even though it was amazing to watch when it originally aired, this legendary drama hasn't held up well over time. Even though I love K-drama and it still is very dear to my heart, however, I want to explain the cons of the show which need to be stated out. When I look back, I feel like the plots were all tossed and over erratic, and the tropes were just there but it never developed nor did it show any character development between the characters in comparison to Hana Yori Dango as that showed growth and chemistry with the main characters in the show.

The show was really good. It was one of the first k dramas I ever watched. I like the show a lot. It made me feel happy, sad, mad and all of the emotions but in a good way. The script was written well. I liked that the story was set during school time. The romance was really good. I liked how the story played out. It doesn't have anything too special that I remember for years and years since I have watched the show. But it was a really fun watch. So it's definitely a nine star for me. The actors and actresses in the show did a really good job. The hair, makeup, and outfits were all very well done. All of the scenes and actions that happened in the show all made sense. The hospital scene was done good in my opinion. The songs that played in the background in this show were all really good. The translation was also very good. This is a great drama for people who are new to the Asian drama world and for people who are here watching Asian dramas for a while.
