Both are loosely similar, main characters knowing each other since high school days, having experienced long-lasting trauma and their future being shadowed by it. Both movie will leave you with some kind of feelings, although endings are different.

I like to compare both main characters and their self absorbed point of view in life. Both films are a book adaptations which depicts depression, suicide, sex, loss and life. It may be a bit slow but the story line, cinematography and acting makes up for it.
All together, both movies are beautifully written, definitely not a waste of time to watch.
